Awwwww, and me liking the new Commissioner lasted less than a week. Banning shifts? **** that ****.

      [Rant]
So mister Manferd wants to "inject additional offense into the game."
He says shifts give the defensive team a competitive advantage.
So what? Getting rid of shifts will give the offensive team a competitive advantage.
Why not make a rule keeping the firstbaseman from shifting from holding a runner on base. Why not just do what MLB did in '69 and lower the mound some more, or just do away with it altogether. Hell, Manferd should fine pitchers who nibble at the corners in an attempt to deceive umps into calling a ball a strike & fool hitters into swinging at pitches out of the strike zone. Those pitchers are as bad a cheaters as Bill Belichick & PED users.
Want to increase offense? Inlaw the aluminum bat. Unban midgets from pinch hitting. I mean little people.
Outlaw the curveball, like the spitball. It ain't the pitchers job to upset the applecart, batters should be able to call for high or low pitches from the pitcher.
      [/Endrant]

TLDR Version. Manfred ain't no man.
      T-BONE.

        Re: MLB Off-Topic

I'm indifférent on the shifts. I think they're a brilliant idea, but for a long portion of the history of the game shifts were hardly if ever used and the game was fine. I do think, however, that banning/regulating them is nearly impossible. Do you put a box out there and say the SS can't be positioned outside of it prior the pitch? What if there is an extreme LH pull hitter and the SS plays more up the middle, is that a shift? It becomes idiotic to the point that we're worrying about stuff we don't need to worry about.

If he wants to inject more offense in the game (hilarious that we've reached that point in baseball after the 1990's/2000's) how about putting the onus on the hitters adjust?

I don't want more offense. I rather love watching Kershaw, Felix, Harvey, Fernandez, Scherzer, etc dominate. The wealth of pitching talent we have in this league right now is a blessing, and it makes offensive talents like Trout and Stanton that much more special.

I do agree with you…I thought baseball was perfect in the 1980s with the blend of pitching, hitting, speed, and defense (plus parity) that we saw and IMO we've gotten back very close to that era of baseball.

I agree, I want to see more teams like the Royals. If they prove that they're not just a one-off I think we'll see a lot of teams copying that style (or so I hope)

Sure, you can TRY to hit it the other way but maybe 1% of the power hitters today would be as successful doing that and if you think HRs are down now the numbers would probably plummet even further if pull guys are suddenly trying to hit it the other way.

That being said, I do think there's a place for shifts in the game and as I stated earlier something like a mandatory amount of shifts per game would probably be the best solution.
I couldn't care less that HR numbers are down. The rise in strikeouts is more of an issue for offenses. If guys start looking to drive the ball the other way, averages would likely rise, helping create more offense, and reducing the effectiveness/quantity of shifts.

Baseball is by far the most stubborn sport, and is made up of the most stubborn people, of all the major American sports. It's infuriating as a coach and fan.

The shift is only a "problem" because a small subset of power hitters are too selfish to trade their 15% (which is reduced with the shift) chance at an extra base hit for a 95% chance at a single.

Obvious hyperbole is obvious, but if you were shifted, say, 10 times, 9.5 singles is one helluva lot better than 1-2 doubles.

                        Agreed.

These are professional hitters. No reason they can find a way to take any pitch and hit it away from the shift for a hit.

I would love to see baseball return to Montreal.

Although question becomes if they decide to say move Tampa Bay to Montreal, do we stick the Expos in the AL East or realign the divisions again?
