True, but in terms of the regional economics of Canada, Quebec should benefit quite a bit from this situation. A giant like Bell could probably absorb the disparity in costs vs. U.S. clubs ok. I know within a few years the dollar is supposed to hit around the 70-71 cent mark, but Bell still might be able to bankroll a higher payroll team than the Rays at that exchange rate.

But yeah, I don't see it happening any time soon. I'm also not sure how the tv money situation works for the Jays and Rogers—or would with a Montreal club and Bell. I assume since they are owned by the actual broadcasters their coffers are one in the same.

I know Bob McCown was claiming the Jays lost quite a bit of money last year, which is unusual with the regional tv deals. So I assume the Jays actually being owned by the broadcaster has something to do with this.

I think the Canadian dollar hovering around 80 cents U.S. has had a tremendous impact on the Jays budget. It doesn't sound like they're going to end up spending as much as they did last year which is surprisingly because Paul Beeston is on the record last year as saying the club was going to spend more money in 2015.

Beeston was on the radio today saying that the Jays still have the wherewithal to spend more dollars if need be.

Not scared of their current teams, but scared of just how easy it'd be for them to bounce back. Look at O's and Rays. Both had to struggle for so long just to finally make it to(or back to) the top. Red Sox/Yankees on the other hand, I seriously doubt you'll see either team missing the playoffs for a long period of time.

3 years has been Red Sox longest drought since WC was introduced, and 2(current "drought) has been Yankees longest since WC was introduced. Both have had much longer in previous decades, but even then, had MLB had 1-2WC spots in those decades, both these teams probably wouldnt have had a drought longer than a few years either

On Pete Rose, I don't think he will get in at all. Because look at Shoeless Joe, he "threw" a WS series. And that was in 1919 or something like that.

They're working on the Pete Rose situation. He's going to be involved in the All-Star stuff this year, so there goes that lifetime ban.

                So yeah, scared.

We just acquired two of the best players in the league. We've shown we can sign FAs, develop talent, draft, and spend more than enough to build a team. The Red Sox are quality competition, but I'm not scared of any team enough to be pleading to get out of the division.

Pete was named in 1999 to the All-Century Team, & was allowed to be on field in the '99 Braves Yankees World Series, if you recall the Jim Gray attack. That's been 15 or 16 years ago & he hasn't been reinstated, I don't expect him to be let back in now. I hope in 2019, on the 100th anniversary of the Black Sox scandal, Joe Jackson is forgiven & inducted into the HoF. Then some time after that, lift the Rose ban.

Shoeless Joe Jackson was a player at the time. Rose bet on baseball as a manager. I'm not saying they need to let Rose be involved in baseball again, just that he deserves to go into the Hall of Fame as a player.

I'm not arrogant enough to think I know all the ins-and-outs of a pro sports team, but count me as someone who finds this hard to believe.
Each MLB team gets $50M a year just for their national TV deals.
I have to believe the Jays are getting at least $50M/yr from regional deals and that doesn't even include their radio deal or various other outlets like MLB Extra Innings or MLB.tv.
Their payroll was $130M last year so I would be willing to bet that their entire salary was covered by all media deals - and probably then some.

Teams have always been very creative when it comes to hiding funds, or moving them around to make it look like they're taking a loss.

I know Phil Esposito, one-time owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, said once on NHL Network radio that all owners predict their outcome prior to the season.
They average out the price per seats and then estimate that they'll sell out every game and parking space.
So based on that, a team might say they predict they'll make $100M that year.
But if they don't sell out every game and they only make $80M, then they consider it a $20M loss. Even if they actually net a profit.

Maybe that's the same with all sports franchises?

In any event, I have a really hard time believing the Jays lost money last year.

Regarding the Expo's, I would love to see them back in MLB.
They were one of the top draws in baseball once upon a time (even outdrawing the Yankees) and I truly believe if they were given a new building they would have thrived in Quebec.

I have a very surprising stat for you guys to go along with this. I think ONLY 12 NCAA Athletic Departments make money. I don't remember if that's exactly it but it's something like that. I learned that last year in one of my classes in college.
