GG voting is very different now; it used to be “eye test and reputation”, but today with all the metrics it’s nearly impossible for someone to win it 3-4 times in a row let alone 18.

I’m a big Ozzie Smith fan, but he was winning them in his late 30s and probably several of those would have gone to Bell or Larkin if we had metrics like we do now.

What's interesting is that 75% of Gold Glove votes still come from MLB managers/coaches, and yet Gold Glove winners are much closer to the Fielding Bible Awards in recent years (outliers like Vladdy Guerrero's GG in 2022 notwithstanding).

In case people are wondering, sabermetrics backs up most of this (if there are all-time defensive stats for pitchers, they're hard to find). Ozzie Smith has far and away the highest dWAR of all time for any position. Pudge is #1 for catchers (Yadi is #2), Brooks Robinson has a huge lead among 3B (Beltre is #2), and all the others are top 3 at their position with one exception: Roberto Alomar. Defensive analytics don't really like him at all, although he is ranked as the 4th best offensive 2B since World War II, behind Morgan, Carew, and Biggio.

Not Billy Beane the Oakland Athletics, but the Billy Bean from MLB Commissioner office I assume this is about?

In 1994, I was courting a woman who would eventually become my wife in 1995. The baseball season had just ended August 11. What many may not remember was there was a wild card instituted that season but didn't take effect until 1995 because of the player strike. Thirty years later we can only ponder how that season would have ended, especially the NL East.

Interesting part is that in the very first season of the WC we would've has both WC winners being teams better than at least 1 division winner and the best team to miss the playoffs would've been better than the west (both AL and NL) winner.

I wonder if we would've seen immediate change if that happened year 1? Although that wouldn't happen again (a team missing the playoffs despite being better than a division winner) until 1997 in the NL and 2000 in the AL.

That strike changed things forever. Expos wouldn't have had to sell off everything if they had the remainder of the 94 season to play out including playoffs and possible WS.

Mid-late 90s could've just been all about the Braves and Expos. Without Expos selling off everything, Marlins 97WS doesn't happen with guys like Alou not there, Larry Walker doesn't go to the Rockies (Rockies would suck even more than their 70 win teams during those years), no Pedro on Boston. Baseball would've been changed so much.

I try to find the silver lining in any dark cloud, and the 1994 season had some of the darkest clouds ever. So anyway, my silver lining is we were spared a postseason with a '94 AL West champion. How awful it would have been if the AL West winner went to the World Series. At the time of the strike, the AL West leader was 10 games UNDER .500

There was still plenty yet to play. The running joke inside the family is I finally decided to wed due to a baseball strike

Uhg, ugly. There were ten teams with LOSING records but still had a better record than the AL West leader. Uhgly.
