Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat

Nice to see the thread resurrected, thought everyone gave up on the Buccos.

-The offense is looking bad again, as the pulled one of the pattened Kip Wells games. He pitches great but they can't muster any run support behind him. I think they said yesterday that the Pirates were like 0 for their last 22 with men in scoring position, folks that aint good.

-Simon has till Friday before his 20 day rehab is up. I would love the see the Pirates cut ties with him but I don't think it's going to happen. My gut says since J.J is on the DL that Simon comes up with the one last chance to prove and he provides less than average but Littlefield keeps him around anyways. Then way J.J is back either Cota or Mateo is tried to slip through waivers.

-Daryle Ward has been great so far. He has the absolute perfect swing for PNC Park. He's a lefty who hits fly balls. With the short fence out in left all those fly balls have the chance to do some damage. He looke like he's got his head on straight now and is still young at 27 or 28 I believe. Littlefield gets major credit for that signing.

-Nunez eh, what else is new. It's only one game and everyone deserves at least a couple starts just to keep fresh. As long as he isn't a constant starter one start a month isn't terrible.

    - Mondesi signs with a contender by August? I'll raise you one says he signs before the All-Star break at the latest. I bet he'll be back before the end of June though in some way. Yes the Pirates can sue and yes they probably won't. Is it really worth it though? Mondesi wasn't doing much at all, lets just part ways with him no ugly stuff.

-Wow do I hope Benson throws well tommorrow. He really needs to pick it up if the Pirates want anything in return. He needs a couple good games and then the Pirates need to ship him off quick. The longer they wait the less likely they get a great return back. At midnight on July 31 every team in the league knows the Pirates want him gone and thy know that they'll do anything to get out from him contract. They won't really have to offer anything and the 11th hour just because the Pirates so badly want to get rid of him. Hope for a couple good games and start peddling him off.

-I've heard Burnett Friday too. It would be nice to see what he can do in the Major Leagues. I think he's missed a couple starts in the minors for injuries so I just dont hope the Pirates pull him up too quickly and get him hurt or something. Plus he hasn't looked quite as good as in Spring training but still decent. But above all I hope he blows the Cubbies away.

-Mateo, I have my doubts about him. Mateo has been hitting well, but he's also been striking out a ton at Nashville. Nice to see the power but he's not getting much else. If it came down to those two I would still still with J.J, I think he's got the skills he just needs the playing time. (Speaking of the minors J.R House has been tearing it up. He hit for the cycle two nights ago and went 3 for 4 last night needing only the triple for another cycle. Find this boy a position we need him in the big leagues)

-As for Boone my guess is that he's 29 or 30 I don't know off hand. Signing him this year wouldn't be a bad thing, kind of like what the Yankees did with Jon Leiber. He can definatly fill the hole at 3rd. Even if we don't sign him it's great to see the Pirates are acually looking for an upgrade and know that Stynes isn't the option there.

The reports on Raul Mondesi say that he may sign with the Angels, how scary would that be, they already have two of the best OF arms in all of Baseball with Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Guillen (10 OF assists between them) and to add Mondesi's arm too, teams will have to start playing base to base against them.

I don't know about that one. Where would you play all three of them? None of them are really suited to play center, though I'd give Vlad the nod over the other two. Besides, they have Anderson (once he's healthy) and Erstad if they want to put him there.

The issue for the Angels is: they don't know when Anderson is going to be healthy and with Erstad's hammy there is no way the Angels would put him in the OF, Mondesi can play all 3 OF positions and would probably play CF untill Anderson is ready, after that between the OF and DH they could find playing time for him.

My money would be on Boston. I heard that he's great friends with Ortiz and Manny. They could sign him as insurance to Trot Nixon whos back seems to be taking longer than expected to heal. Some team will pick him up and he will play again this year. My Nostradamus like prediction says June 20th he is playing again.
