Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat

I think the two players we have in the bullpen that would make the best closer should Mesa be traded are either Salomon Torres or Mike Gonzalez.

Torres can be nasty the first time through the lineup. The only downside to him is that he sometimes loses the plate. The fact that he's pitched so much lately makes me think he could handle the workload.

Gonzalez is an interesting option. Friday's grand slam aside, he's held opponents to about a .150 average and has great K/9 and K/BB ratios. He's also a lefty who can throw the ball in the mid 90's, which is rare.

Tim Kirkjian (sp?) on Baseball Tonight made an interesting point the other night. He said that if the Pirates moved Ollie to the closer and had him go exclusively sidearm, he'd be flat-out unhittable. While I can agree with that, I don't want to lose him as a starter, since he has the potential to become the ace the Pirates badly need.

Closer is definatly something the Pirates will have to look at. Vogelsong has the stuff but I still think he'd be better used as a starter. Gonzalez and Torres are probably the two logical choices. Gonzalez has been pretty good in his time up. I don't think he's ready to be a closer now he still has a few things to work out, but maybe next year. If Mesa was traded today I think Torres would have to be the closer. He can handle it and when he's on he can pitch with any of them.

I'm with you Pitt, Perez would be an absolutly dominating closer but with the way he's pitched he deserves to be a starter. He has looked great all year and he's been the only constant in the rotation. Within the next couple years he should step up and fill that ace spot for the Pirates.

I sure hope Benson has it tommorrow. His last couple starts have been good except for a couple late collapses. He's the best pitcher left on the open market. If he pitches well hopefully some other team may get caught up in all the bidding and over pay for him.

EDIT: 1st Round pick Neil Walker got his first hit tonight for Bradenton

Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat

2 weeks ago, june 15th, me and my dad went down to see the buccos for the first time this year. they played the angels and it was a decent game. except for the fact that jason bay struck out four times.

so we get back home, and turn on the news. the sports segment comes on and the guy says something like "we have highlights of the pirates game and also some interesting footage of jason bay in the pirates locker room." so me and my dad look at each other and think hmm what could this be (im thinking slammed water coolers, bat racks, who knows lol).

the clip comes on and its jason sitting there, hands in head, maybe crying for like a good 20 minutes they said before he even got up and showered, changed uniform or anything. nobody went near him and the team just let him sit like that there for a while.

i guess it was just his wake up call to himself because since that night hes been on an absolute tear. i dont know if anyone else that lives down there saw that. i wouldnt have seen it had i not been visiting my grandparents down there. i live in erie and i dont believe it was on PST, but one of the local stations down there had it (possibly the cbs affiliate of pitt).

anyway theres my story to contribute to this great thread on how i was at the game that has possibly turned around jasons season. had he hit well at the game i was at, i probably would have brought home a winner

Bay's leading the league right now in a lot of offensive categories as far as rookies go, so I'd say he's figured some things out. The major hole in his swing right now seems to be pitches down and inside. He whiffs a lot on those, but he absolutely kills high balls and pitches out and away.

What a way to win the game last night against the Cards. Jack Wilson hustling his butt off once again -- of course, I was yelling at him for trying for third until the ball went in the dugout...

What's this? No Pirate fan is keeping track of game 1 of the double header? I guess I'll post up to date then.

Pirates have a 6-1 lead after putting up a crooked number in the third inning i believe, I'm sure you Pirate fans will welcome Alvarez, he hit a grand salami. Nice to see Ollie have a lead, he's has eight k's and still going strong. He should be able to get pass the sixth inning.
