        Ryno who?

Kris Bryant is going to be the modern day Mr. Cub if he isn't already. The guy is a legend in the making in that town.

...and Manny Banuelos has an inflamed elbow. I swear, if he needs a second TJS I don't know what I'll do. We have had the worst luck with pitchers over the last 10 years.

That sucks I feel bad for the kid. Because it seems like he was starting to live up to his potential.

You've got to be kidding me.

Good grief, we're cursed. All those years of Maddux and Glavine sailing along with no problems at all are coming back to bite us.

He's done...they shut him down for the rest of the year and Folty is taking his spot.

                  Holy.

                  Crud.

Why is MLB not doing anything about this? So many pitchers and dreams utterly shattered because of a continual injury.

Smoltzie said it best in his HOF speech - parents need to stop having their kids pitch max effort and also understand baseball is not a year-long sport...have them play something else outside the spring/summer.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

I can't think of any that the MLB could really do anything about it. I think Smoltzie hit the nail on the head. It's fall on the parents. I am seeing it with kids I am umpiring that are playing so much baseball. Like there is one kid who pitches and he pitches something like 100 pitches in 2 weekend games and the kid is 12. I don't understand it.

What would you want the MLB to do, realistically? Put inning restrictions on pitchers? Tell them not to throw max effort? Not to throw as much offspeed stuff? Give every team another roster spot and force a 6 man rotation?

You and Smoltz are on the right path, it starts with the kids and we're just now seeing the worst of it. The change has to happen with the kids, not in the MLB.

Exactly. The damage is already done by the time the organizations get these kids. The only thing they can do about it is to start up their own youth organization with extremely tight pitch and innings limits and only draft kids that played in that organization growing up. That way, they know the kid's throwing history.

And even that probably isn't fallible. Throwing is unnatural.. injuries are a nearly inevitable outcome.

As Smoltz has said numerous times you got to stop looking at the radar gun. This is a huge issue as kids these days think the best way to get noticed is if they light up the gun every time out. I really think that pitching effectively can be done in lots of ways. Hell, look at Mark Buehrle, the guy can barely get his fastball over 82 MPH but he's been a horse all throughout his career and has put up some great numbers. Just look at his numbers this season from mid may til now. The guy is just killin' it and he's NEVER been on the DL (knocks on wood furiously)

Unfortunately, the gun will always be the #1 reason a kid gets looked at. You can teach a kid to pitch, but you can't necessarily teach 94+

Oh, I don't disagree with that but it seems in the last 5-6 years it's been literally "the cult of the gun". I've heard that kids don't really get looked at even if they're pushing 90 MPH.
