    +10000000000

WAR*$/WAR-salary is not a comprehensive analysis of a free agent deal for an MLB team

Cubs are easy world series favorites now i think.

Stl and Washington supposedly offered 200 million. Wow. I guess Heyward was sold on Chicago.

That said, I'd have a hard time giving him this kind of money for a few reasons:

          1) A lot of his value comes from defense/baserunning. He's elite in those areas, but those are also the two areas that can/do decline the earliest.

          2) Ever since he was beaned by Jon Niese in August of 2013 he has really struggled against LHP. He was absolutely abysmal in 2014 and not that great in 2015.

          3) His BB rate continues to decline. I have never seen a player who displayed such excellent plate discipline as a 20 year old rookie to only see it erode with each passing year.

Overall, the Cubs have to make this move and it's going to reap immediate benefits, and honestly I don't know who else is out there to throw money at. No way though the Braves could give any player this kind of money right now.
#2 and #3 are the bigger items...Heyward was NOT the center of STL's lineup. His defense and baserunning skills (without many SBs, by the way) is what boosts his value.

He's also a bit injury prone...interesting that CHC put an opt-out close for HIM if he reaches certain plate appearances.

As a side note/question, is it possible for teams to put their own opt-out clauses?

Absolutely. Good luck getting an elite free agent to sign such a contract, though.

I know he's had other injuries outside of being drilled in the face and having an appendectomy, but taking those things out I'd say he's had something that wouldn't necessarily constitute him as prone to injury.

His BB% went down but so did his K%. I love this deal and think he fits perfectly. He's still not going to be the center of a lineup. Cubs added 2 high contact guys which was the real problem in the playoffs instead of the defense stuff.

Our favorite third baseman, Chris Johnson, has a $10 million option with a $1 million buyout for the final year of his deal.

                          Michael Cuddyer is retiring.

Man, I liked him, sad to see him go. I'm surprised he's willing to forgo the final $12.5m on his contract. (or at least a portion)

Heyward was top 10 in pitches seen per plate appearances. His abs have been superb although not yielding results like BB and hits.

I still can't believe we got jhey. Opening day can't get here soon enough.
