I guess Appell hasn't translated very well to pro ball so far.

Pretty nice haul by the Phils there.

Velasquez has always been the centerpiece of the deal, but now getting Appel is pretty cool. Hopefully he turns it around. Was drafted #1 for a reason.

Giles may be a stud reliever, but that is a lot to give up for a guy who pitches maybe 70 innings a year. Same sentiment for the Kimbrel trade. Washington should move Drew Storen while they have the chance. I'm glad we got K-rod when we did; prices have only gone up.

Appel has two things still going for him 97 MPH fastball and an elite level slider, neither is a guarantee for success but if starting doesn't work out he still has high end RP written all over him. The Phillies got two potential rotation pieces with the added security of being able to move to the bullpen. I like Eshelman as well but if it came down to choice, I'd rather have had Ferrell who would almost assuredly be Giles replacement down the road. I think it was a good trade for both clubs.

Damn, and Appel was a #1 pick too. Usually those are guarantees.

Mark Appel is 23 years old...unless there is an injury of some sorts or drug use, etc, I expect he will still make a solid major league pitcher, probably as a reliever.

                  Sarcasm?

The success rate of #1 draft picks in MLB is by far the worst out of all the major sports.

Want to go back to Heyward for a minute. People bitching and moaning he is making $23M a season. Jacoby Ellsbury was 4 years older when he hit FA and is a pretty good comp, IMO, for Heyward. And Ells is making just over 21 per year. So accounting for Heyward being 4 years younger and inflation he could probably be making more.

That's only relevant if people think Ellsbury is worth his contract. If people think they're both overpaid, then we're back to the drawing board.

Mookie Betts for Jose Fernandez straight up, I probably say no.
