MLB's farm system, free agent system and draft pick system is by far the most complicated in sports. I still think the service time and comp pick stuff should be entirely revamped.

Can somebody remind me again what qualifies a player to have a comp pick associated with him?

          Was he playing anywhere?

It's a shame, once he made that diving attempt on the diamond in SF, his career finished then and there.

Nope. Hadn't been in baseball since 2011 I believe.

It's fairly easy for the qualifying offer. The team can decide whether to give him a qualifying offer, which is a 1 year contract worth the average of the top 125 salaries in the MLB, this year it was around $15.5M if he was on the team at the beginning of the season. If he is traded during the season he cannot get one like Johnny Cueto, David Price this year. Then the player after receiving a qualifying offer has the right to accept or decline. Most players will decline the offer (this year was the time in the 3 offseasons of use that an offer was accepted.) then they are attached with draft pick compensation. And the team that loses the player gets 1 pick (per player lost) in the compensation round which is right after the 1st round. And 20 teams that sign these players lose their first round pick the next season (meaning 2016 draft for this season). And the teams with the 10 worst records give up their 2nd round pick if they sign a qualified FA. Hope that helps you. If it doesn't this article should help as it's more structured then my post. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2014/11/...on-free-agency

                Not quite, Sox.

What qualifies a player to even have a pick associated with him? I mean...not every player, after their service time ends, has a comp pick attached.

Any player can be given one if they stayed on the same team throughout the whole year. Whether it be Zack Greinke or the 25th man on the roster. It comes down to what the team thinks he's worth. If they think he is worth the 15.5 million for next season. So guys like Wei Yin Chen, Greinke, Zimmerman, Brett Anderson, etc. their teams thought they were the money for next season. While the Nationals didn't think Doug Fister and outfielder Denard Span, as well as the Angels with David Freese were worth the 15.5 million next season.

He stated it in his earlier post...if a team makes a qualifying offer to a player than they get a draft pick if he walks away.

It's a cat and mouse game really...a team can make the QO and maybe they actually hope he rejects it and they get a pick when he walks, but maybe he shocks them accepts it and now they have to pay/keep him.

Not all players have the draft pick with them though, right?

Mike Minor is an example of a player non-tendered by Atlanta. He doesn't have a compensation pick attached with him I don't think. I guess it has to do with the number of years he's with the team and "run out" of arbitration eligible years?

                      Ugh. It's just too complicated.

Right a guy like Mike Minor doesn't have compensation attached to him. Only players who reject the QO get compensation. Non-tendering is different than a QO. Non-tendering is when the team doesn't want to give a number for arbitration IIRC, which IIRC can't be any less than 80% of their previous salary. So he still had arbitration years left but he was going to get too much in arbitration for the Braves to want to pay him.

Ehh. I probably wouldn't have paid him that much.

Neither contract is worth it, but if you feel like overpaying, I'd say JZimm is $30m more valuable than Leake and then some.

I think Leake provides things to the table that the Giants could use. Efficient pitcher with regard to time taken and innings to eat, he can hit, he can field his position, etc. Plus, he's got a year on Zimmerman (in the good way). His ERA at AT&T Park has also been phenomenal.

Hey, I'd like Zimmerman just as well, but Leake was already on the team and seemed a bit like an "easy grab." By the time he was willing to test the market, I'm sure we could have gotten him for even a bit less than that.

I've just always been a Leake fan his whole career. It's a personal thing more than anything. I thought he would have landed more money for more years, but this was very attainable for the Giants.

I like Leake a lot too tbh. He's a nice innings eater, good K/BB guy. Just think 5/80 is steep.

Actually, everything is steep this offseason. Just all around weird winter.

Although I would agree, Shark got paid $10 million more for the same amount of years, something that I just did not agree with at all.

Should get some good tilt to his fastball on that AT&T mound, though. That, and it's good that Rags will be working with him. Just what he needs.
