IMO, Baltimore dodged a bullet with Fowler...he's not a bad player, but when you have a CF who is supposed to lead off I want a guy who can play defense (he can't) and doesn't strike out (he does). If he doesn't hit for power (67% of homers have been hit at home in his career...slugging is 100 points lower on the road) he loses most of his offensive value. I don't see him excelling in a place like Baltimore.
Well, he'd have played RF instead of CF, so there's less ground to cover, especially in Camden Yards because of the short porch. He also would've had one of the better defensive CF's in baseball next to him, which can't hurt.

His skillset is something we really needed. Machado and Davis are the only guys in the lineup that have an above average OBP. Also, we don't need another power hitter. Jones/Davis/Machado/Trumbo could each potentially hit 30 homers. Schoop and Wieters could hit around 20 each. We just need a guy that can get on base in front of them. Also, Fowler would've made it so Machado didn't have to lead off.

I thought the new Japanese guy is going to be lead-off?

If Kim's transition goes smoothly he could definitely be moved up to that spot at some point in the season, but I don't see Buck putting him in a pressure situation like that right from the jump.

I thought for the longest time Rickie Weeks could really hit...if he'd stop trying to jack one. Guy had really good bat speed but got way too homer happy.

Ugh. The top 6 picks in that 2003 draft were all busts. I bought a ton of high end boxes of baseball cards that year too. Absolutely worthless now.

Guys like Ryan Harvey, Kyle Sleeth...didn't even get above AA-ball. It really shows how unpredictable the MLB draft is relative to the other sports.

That entire first round sucked...Markakis is decent not great. First good player to come out of that draft was Jones in the supplemental round.

Re: 2015 MLB Hot Stove thread

Draft obviously so unpredictable, and looking at so many of these busts over the years, many were actually top 100 prospects at one point. Developing is even more important than drafting.

I wonder about all the possible deals that could've been made over the years involving some of these top 100 prospects who never lived up to that potential. I'm sure over the years, some teams probably offered some big things for their top prospects, but refused it, and then those prospects turned into nothing.

Dealing prospects in baseball more than any sport is a dangerous thing. You could end up getting Cliff Lee for a Justin Smoak, or dealing Brandon Phillips,Cliff Lee and others for Bartolo Colon.

The funny thing is I think baseball teams are probably better at drafting than sports with more "predictable" play like basketball and hockey. Basketball teams just do not know how to draft.

Guess it speaks to all the resources in baseball.

I'm surprised that this many people hate the Orioles and liking teams that everyone hates can be extremely stressful, so regardless of what happened this situation sucks.

Four of which were fluky one year wonders and/or are out of the league already.

Adam Jones is the only legit player and even he is crazy overrated when going by advanced stats.

I think nba its more a lack of developing. MLB you get to go through farm system learning everything. NBA you go from college basically straight into NBA. Doing that could hurt some guys cause they might not be ready, but then just thrown in there vs best in the world.

All the development in the world could not have saved Dion Waiters or Hasheem Thabeet
