Re: 2015 MLB Hot Stove thread

The Braves didn't have many pieces in place in 2015. So, why do you trade one of the few answers you have for an unproven commodity at a position you have already been stock piling at?

At the beginning of the season we traded Kimbrel and Gattis. 2 young guys who were locked up for several more years. I hated to see them go, but getting a haul of prospects in return wasn't the worst thing.

Half way through the season we trade the top position prospect and a mid rotation pitcher who was 24 for an unproven bat who was already 30. It was like they flipped strategies half way through the season.

Now this? Simmons has a glove that could land him in Cooperstown one day. He's affordable, he's locked up for many more years, he's young, and he was one of the probably 2 position players in the organization you felt good about. Now you trade him for basically the #37 BA prospect who is another pitcher? Someone please tell me what the plan is because there just is no consistency behind these moves.

Do the braves want to kill their fanbase? Seriously, it must be hard being a braves fan atm. Whats next? Trading freddie for Adam Lind and some more back end pitching prospects? I wouldnt be surprised if that happend actually.

Don't get hang on the #37 ranking by BA, that's just one publication. Clearly the Braves FO is high on him and Ellis, to a lesser extent. This is a trade in which we might not know who "won" for a long time.

No I think it's pretty clear to determine who won here.

Depressing...I said a trade that knocks you over makes sense, not one that makes you scratch your head. Look, I actually like the prospects they got back...just not for the price. I'm convinced the Braves days as a contending franchise are done until they get an owner who cares....sigh, and it's not even winter yet.

                  This hurts bad...

According to Jon Heyman the Braves could have gotten Steven Matz and Michael Conforto around the trade deadline for Simmons, but NY refused to part with both players.

We just need to get it over with...trade Freeman and call it good. I hate that he's going to be playing the prime of his career on such a crappy team.

So...they couldn't have gotten them both. He makes it sound like the Braves said no to those two players.

That's kind of a contradictory report...how could they have gotten both if the Mets weren't going to deal both of them?

Aside from that, trying to wrap my head around this Simmons deal. It really depends on how much of a gap in value you believe there is between a legendary defender at SS and a merely above average one. If you feel Sean Newcomb isn't worth as much as that gap, then I can see why Braves fans don't like it. Aybar and Simmons are nearly a wash from an offensive standpoint, although Aybar being a switch-hitter makes him a bit more useful there. It's a tough pill to swallow, though, for a once-proud fanbase of a team continually kicking itself in the balls to make a brighter future.

He doesn't really specify who made the offer. I think the Braves wanted both players, but NY decided against it. If I had to take a guess NY probably called ATL first considering where they were at SS in the middle of the season.

He fixed his tweet. Mats + Conforto was the Braves request for Simmons.
