Re: What do the Yankees do now?

From what I heard... Steinbrenner met with Cashman in Tampa... and told him his job was safe. I imagine Torre's job is safe because they just extendied hsi contract.

My bet is Stottlemeyer will be fired this offseason. Not that its his fault... but somebody's gotta be blamed for the loss. There's no such thing as "bad luck" or a fluke in The Boss's world. So its likely Stottlemeyer will be the scapegoat.

I would like to see maybe Ron Guidry... or Jim Kaat... as Yankees pitching coach. Maybe even get Dave Righetti out of St. Louis.

Where the Yankees really got killed was their lack of a lefty specialist. You could see how unconfident Torre was in Heredia when he left Gorodn in to pitch to him in the 8th of Game 4.

We needed a BJ Ryan type of guy to be acquired at the deadline and hats where Cashman failed us.

Hopefully it'll turn out better next year.

Re: What do the Yankees do now?

Carl Pavano is coming off a career year and it would be silly to expect him to win 18 games again next season when prior to this season he had never won more than 12 games in a season, does Esteban Loaiza ring a bell.
Astros owner Drayton McLane has said that he wants Carlos Beltran back next season, and since the Astros are not likely to re-sign Jeff Kent it could be possible, as one poster mentioned "in Houston He's a hero", as Biggio and Bagwell are in the twighlight of their careers Beltran and Lance Berkman could be the corner stone "killer B's" for the next decade of Astros Baseball.

I read Pavano doesn't want to play in New York anyway.

there isn't really any top notch pitcher free agent this summer
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

Re: What do the Yankees do now?

You miss my point. You were talking about how $teinbrenner "buys" all his players. I'm just pointing out that the Sox are just as bad. But maybe your post shouldn't have been the one to quote...just happened to be the last one before I posted mine... i'm not attacking you. i'm mearley pointing out the fact that too many people blame the yanks (or laugh at them) for spending so much money on talented free agents only to miss out on the WS again.
There is a difference though between how the Sox and Yanks built their current teams. The Red Sox team is composed of (just looking at the starting 9 and pitching)really just 3 of those big name free agents types: Manny, Foulke, and Damon. The rest of the was built through small moves and trades.

Pedro and Schilling were big trades where the Red Sox shipped away some prospects for talent. I know Schill was drafted by the Sox but he isn't here today because of that.

Varitek and Lowe were guys they traded away their closer for, Heathcliff Slocom, years ago. Varitek and Lowe were essentially major league ready prospects that panned out for Boston. Trot Nixon is the only regular (not including Youkilis who was a regular for a large portion of the season) drafted by the Sox.

Cabrera and Embree were deadline deals. Embree was in the midst of a career year and was a fairly significant trade at the time when the Sox got him in 02 from San Diego. And we all know how the Sox got Cabrera.

The rest of that staff is made up of guys other teams essentially gave up on. No one wanted guys like Millar, Bellhorn, Timlin, Wakefield, and Mueller when they became free agents and the Sox saw something in them and brought them aboard. And we all know how Ortiz was released by Minnesota and was playing in the Mexican leagues when the Sox signed him to compete with Jeremy Giambi for playing time.

The Red Sox were pretty smart in how they built this team, for the most part, and so far it's worked.

well at least Steinbrenner was a bit more gracious about losing.

                                2004
"I congratulate the Boston Red Sox on their great victory. I want to thank our loyal fans for their enormous support. Of course, I am disappointed because I wanted a championship for them and for our city. You can be assured, we will get to work and produce a great team next year."

Plus i don't see anything wrong with Steinbrenner. Sure he spends a lot, but its because he likes to win. Lots of owners are rich, but they don't want to open their wallets for their team. The owner of the twins is worth about 2 billion.
