well at least Steinbrenner was a bit more gracious about losing.

    2004
"I congratulate the Boston Red Sox on their great victory. I want to thank our loyal fans for their enormous support. Of course, I am disappointed because I wanted a championship for them and for our city. You can be assured, we will get to work and produce a great team next year."

Plus i don't see anything wrong with Steinbrenner. Sure he spends a lot, but its because he likes to win. Lots of owners are rich, but they don't want to open their wallets for their team. The owner of the twins is worth about 2 billion.
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

Well, this Yankee ***** knows that. I actually admire Steinbrenner and wish other owners would step up to the plate just like him. But realistically, New York is a huge market and effectively has tons of extra revenue to work with. Even if these smaller market team owners would spend more money, they still pale in comparison to the resources the Yankees (and to a lesser extent, the Mets) have.

The rest of the was built through small moves and trades.

Pedro and Schilling were big trades where the Red Sox shipped away some prospects for talent. I know Schill was drafted by the Sox but he isn't here today because of that.

Varitek and Lowe were guys they traded away their closer for, Heathcliff Slocom, years ago. Varitek and Lowe were essentially major league ready prospects that panned out for Boston. Trot Nixon is the only regular (not including Youkilis who was a regular for a large portion of the season) drafted by the Sox.

Cabrera and Embree were deadline deals. Embree was in the midst of a career year and was a fairly significant trade at the time when the Sox got him in 02 from San Diego. And we all know how the Sox got Cabrera.

The rest of that staff is made up of guys other teams essentially gave up on. No one wanted guys like Millar, Bellhorn, Timlin, Wakefield, and Mueller when they became free agents and the Sox saw something in them and brought them aboard. And we all know how Ortiz was released by Minnesota and was playing in the Mexican leagues when the Sox signed him to compete with Jeremy Giambi for playing time.

The Red Sox were pretty smart in how they built this team, for the most part, and so far it's worked.
Very good points. Although the majority of the current team is comprised of FA's and trades, most of them have been with the team for 3+ years.

I agree. Even though I hate Steinbrenner and the Yankees you have to respect his desire to win. There's a lot of teams with owners that do have the resources to spend more and improve their teams but don't. Can't criticise George when it comes to his competitiveness.

I see your point. You can't blame Steinbrenner for buying players, its not like he's breaking the rules or anything. He has the right to spend his money how he sees fit. I was just predicting that he starts being more efficient about how he spends that money. The Yankees currently have a lot of huge contracts and arent getting much production out of them. (Brown, Giambi, etc) I can't see Steinbrenner continuing to spend money on players who aren't giving him his moneys worth in terms of production and competetiveness.

See years 82-94 and how he shipped off people from the farm system to get big names and it never worked out. He would get aging players like Danny Tartabull and Steve Balboni or pitchers like the Perez brothers(Pascual and Melido) while trading away pitching and people like Jay Buhner. The similarities are there between that span and what we are beginning to see again. After NY lost to LA in the 81 series Georgie hit the panic button and depleted the farm system. The same has happened again. The only difference is that the Yanks were able to still make the playoffs in the years since 01. Now the drop off may not be as bad as the 82-94 years but I honestly do not see a WS until some homegrown talent is developed.
