I don't get why the Mets would want Magglio. They already have Beltron, Cameron, and Floyd. Sure they might trade Floyd, but I would think they were set.

Come on Tigs, make this deal!

Well it looks like the Tigers might get him. Newsday is reporting a 5 year 70mil(I believe) deal with clauses. If he is healthy a good move by the Tigers, although risky. Those clauses should prevent disaster if done right.

I'm sceptical of Newsday, but it would be great if that were the case

The Tigers are definitely overspending if that is what Mags is getting.

It's on the front page of mlb.com, but for some reason the link to the story there DOES NOT WORK....it's annoying the hell out of me...either way I still don't get why the Tigers need more outfielding when they had 6 outfielders already....hopefully they'll be getting rid of 2 or 3 for pitching

                          Re: Magglio to the Tigers?

Under the complicated deal, Detroit would have the right to void the contract after the 2005 season if Ordonez has a reoccurrence of the left knee injury that hampered his production with the Chicago White Sox for most of last year and the reoccurrence lands him on the disabled list for 25 days or more.

The 31-year-old Ordonez gets a $6 million signing bonus and a $6 million salary in 2005, meaning the Tigers' exposure is $12 million.

His contract calls for a $15 million salary in 2006, $12 million in 2007, $15 million in 2008 and $18 million in 2009. Detroit has a $15 million option for 2010 with a $3 million buyout and a $15 million option for 2011 with no buyout.

In addition, Ordonez's salary in each of the option years would become guaranteed if he has 135 starts or 540 plate appearances in the previous season or 270 starts or 1,080 plate appearances in the previous two seasons. If his 2010 salary becomes guaranteed under this provision, it would be at $18 million. The 2011 salary would be $15 million.

I was gonna gag when I heard 75 million, but the contract seems like a Pudge one, where there's a good number of outs if the knee doesn't hold up...and if it does hold up, then Magglio's worth the money (he is a A level free agent when healthy)...I actually like the deal since they worked all the outs in.

It does seem high but you are right. If healthy he is a really great player. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Detroit might make some noise in the Central.
