    Re: 2022 - 2023 Hot Stove Thread

I know bullpens are important, but I wonder if one day we'll see a team not care about a closer.

Just treat the 9th the same as you would regardless if you're up 1 or 4.

Ignore the closer role, put your best arms out whenever you can, not spend significant money on a star closer.

Do you remember the 2003 Red Sox?

I remember Pedro, clearly running on fumes (the previous three Yankees went homer, single, single) striking out Soriano with his 100th pitch of the game to end the 7th.

Like most non-Yankees fans watching that game (remember when it seemed like a Cubs/Red Sox World Series was really going to happen?), I thought, "Well, Little took a giant gamble leaving Pedro in, but somehow he got through it."

Then Ortiz hit a solo shot in the 8th. "Great, this will at least give the Sox bullpen a 3-run cushion with 6 outs to go. Timlin, Embree, and Williamson have been great so far in this series. As long as Little doesn't lose his mind and..." Welp.

Haha…yep, miss the Yanks/Red Sox in that era. I was more referring to their failed experiment at Bill James recommendation to do closer by committee.

He was a pretty reliable pitcher but I’m not upset about this. The pitch clock would concern me with him and his 26 different pitches

I wouldn’t be against signing Walker long term. Would love to have deGrom back but his health scares me
