He’s from Newport Beach so it’s close to home. Also the Angels might be the only team on that list that could be interested in him. I don’t see any of the contenders looking to add an aging third baseman that’s trending down the last few seasons and doesn’t have the inflated power numbers of Coors Field anymore.

              Interesting debate for Astros fans.

Jim Bowden said on MLB Network Radio this morning that the Phillies offered the Astros Nick Castellanos & Alec Bohm for Kyle Tucker.

              The Astros declined.

Ok, so why again did Soto get $765 million? Kyle Tucker is a all around better player and he won't come close to getting what Soto did.

Tucker is GG defender and steals bases as well.

Like I said....get ready for Soto to regress from his 2024 numbers. Just wait.

Is he worth 35MM a year? Yes he is. This making more than Ohtani is IMO outrageous and I think as a lifelong Yankee fan I am not crying about it at all. They were gonna pay him that too.......and he simply did not want to share the stage with Judge the rest of his career.

                            That's what I feel.

He did not want to be a Yankee for life. Or try to become another potential Yankees legend. It simply was not important to him.

Judge was offered more money to leave the Bronx....but he knew in his heart he was a Yankee for life.

I can't wait till Soto plays in Yankee stadium for the first time as a Met. That will be a rain of boos like no other in my opinion.

Love the Max Fried and Devin Williams pick ups. Keep chugging here. More work to do.

                                Short answer: Age and leverage.

Tucker will hit FA 2 years older than what Soto is. There's $100M you can take off a comparable Tucker deal to start with. Having 2 additional prime years of an elite hitter adds a TON of value to the contract.

In a weird way Soto's subpar defense/baserunning doesn't really affect his future forecast much since he doesn't depend on those skills - which are usually some of the first to go once age starts to become a factor - to produce value. He projects to be a pretty similar player at age 34-35 to what he is now. Especially since his best offensive skill is his elite (arguably even Bonds level) plate discipline - which doesn't really regress much as you age. (One way to think of it: If Juan Soto is already as valuable as Kyle Tucker without any defensive/baserunning value, then he will be more valuable than Tucker later in their careers once as Tucker loses thise parts of his game)

Throw in the fact that one of the suitors has the most aggressive owner in baseball who won't be outbid and wants to steal him away from their cross-town rival - who also happens to be one of the richest organizations in pro-sports, and you have a recipe for a record setting deal.

I don't know how to quantify it, but I think you can take another $100M off easily if the Cohen-led Mets werent involved. His aggressiveness really pushed the market to a level only he was comfortable to reach (obviously the Yankees ended up close, but it seems like they were reluctant to go up to $700M)
