Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Wow...not only did we put up a major ***-whooping on the Cards, but Perez actually pitched decently. That makes three quality starts in four games. Maybe some of these young pitchers are figuring things out?“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in twelve years, we'll be voting for plants.” - Lewis BlackComment

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
As great as Pujols is, there's no chance he'll hit more HR's than a guy who's home park is PNC. His opportunities are too few - even though he does capitalize on them quite often.
I forgot about Giles.
I'm sure Bay will pass both Giles and Craig Wilson when he's done. That is unless they actually sign Craig this offseason. I just don't see that happening.Comment

Knowing the Pirates, they'll hold onto him in the hopes they can sign him. Craig will sign elsewhere and the Pirates will get nothing in return.Comment

I'm still disappointed that Wilson never really got a great opportunity in Pittsburgh. They've always come up with reasons not to play him everyday. He's a good player that would fit well in the 5/6 hole in the lineup. Especially if they could get that one big power bat in the 4 hole.MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Craig's always been a streaky player. I think that's the main reason the Pirates have been tentative in declaring him a starter. He's also had some bad luck. Great year in 2004 and was going to play everyday in 2005 before he suffered his year of injuries. Then the signing of Burnitz - possibly done because concerns over the health of Craig's wrist?
I think the type of hitter that Craig is, really dictates that he's going to be inconsistent at times. However, if he hits 30+ HR's and keeps his OBP up, what's the problem? My only issue is when he completely dissapears at times during the year. I can understand being inconsistent, but when he dissapears, he really dissapears. In 2004 I think he went 2-3 months without a HR?
With that said, if he hits 29 HR's and completely dissapears for 2-3 months, I'd take it over much of what we do have in the lineup.Comment

What's funny is that they signed Burnitz, probably one of the most streaky players in the league to replace him!
I agree about some of the bad luck he's had. It was a shame with the wrist injury.
They're being no hit right now in the 5th by Carpenter. Big difference from yesterday...MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Carpenter is filthy. STL 4-0 in the end as Carpenter goes 8, giving up 2 hits.
Santos actually pitched VERY well against a good hitting club. He only gave up 2 hits through 6 IP with 4 K's and 1 BB. Unfortunately those 2 hits were both solo HR's.
I agree about Burnitz being streaky. That signing has puzzled me since day 1. I guess they really think he'll take more advantage of the short porch in RF. PNC is a tough place to hit HR's for a RH hitter, but it didn't seem to hurt Craig in 2004.Comment

Buc's losing 3-1 to HOU tonight.
-Ronny Paulino is one big dude. I wouldn't want to try to run him over at the plate!
-Tracy's expression on the bench after the Lane HR tonight was priceless. It was one of those "What did I get myself into" looks.
-If we didn't already know, this team sucks. Just makes me feel better to say it again.Comment

It's been so disappointing. I was in and out watching the game, so I didn't get to see much. I really felt like they would finish .500 this year (call it blind optimism), but when they started out 1-6 before they even played a home game, I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach...
