    2009 Cincinnati Reds

Well it's almost 5 weeks now until Pitchers and Catchers report for spring training.

This is usually the time my blood starts flowing again thinking about Reds Baseball.

Figured I would start this thread up. Feel free to post anything relating to the Reds or their games/division here.

    I'll start...

In a Hal McCoy article in the Dayton Daily News a couple days ago he asked Jockerty about what direction the team was going in the Free Agent Market. He hinted about having scouts checking out Andruw Jones and Roco Baldelli.

    What do you guys think?

    Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds

I'm not excited at all for the Reds this year. Last year I was and they completely crapped out. So I think I'll let them surprise me if they play well and play to expectations if they suck again. Sounds terrible, but I hate getting my hopes shot down annually by the Reds.

I am with you slickdtc. The Reds have done nothing this offseason to make me think they will be any better. We have some good young pitchers and Bruce, Votto and Phillips. Nothing else excites me. I like Keppinger quite a bit as well. But every year thay talk about opening up the check book and blah blah blah, yet nothing.

I always have been and always will be a Reds fan, but the interest just isn't there for me as much as it used to be. I guess the countless years of sucking has taken effect on me.

I did read this morning that we are still looking at Baldelli and that there have been talks about Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady, which would excite me a little. But we will see if they actually jump on it.

Baldelli is going to sign with the Red Sox so we can forget about him.
As for Andruw Jones, the guy has lost it plain and simple.
He is hitting under .100 in the Domican leagues this year.

I really dont know what to think of the Reds going into this season, I really thought they would sign a big RH bat and they havent.
It looks like another long year if you ask me.

Guess I'm a little late on this:

As reported on Tuesday night, the 32-year-old infielder/outfielder was re-signed by Cincinnati to a one-year contract worth $2 million. The deal, which includes up to an additional $2 million in incentives, became official on Wednesday
            .

The official website of the Cincinnati Reds with the most up-to-date information on news, tickets, schedule, stadium, roster, rumors, scores, and stats.

As for the previous topic I usually have high hopes for the team, only to see it fail by mid to late April. I am not impressed with what we've done this off-season so far. Would really like to see them sign a big RH bat also.

            Just something besides Tavares....

Even though they deny it, I think Alex Gonzalez is really messed up and can't play. That's why they brought Hairston back. If it was to start in LF, then that's a little stupid. Someone will be signed who bats RH, has some pop, and will play LF. Have no idea who that will be but it probably won't be one that makes a splash. Now...if they feel like talking Manny Ramirez's agent into doing a 2-year, $50 million deal just for the hell of it, THAT would be a major cannonball into the pool!

well that's a sound theory about Gonzalez but at the same time, Hairston was signed for just $2 mil for this year. That's pretty cheap as long as he stays healthy and comes close to matching his numbers from last year (if they were extrapolated over 162 games), not to mention adds a legitimate leadoff hitter to the lineup.

I was talking to my friend about this. Just tell Manny you'll pay him some outrageous sum, like 25 million, for one year.

He'll get the attention that the Reds need, and he's an excellent hitter. He might be able to teach the youngins a thing or two.

                  I know I'm dreaming, but I'm allowed.

It's only January after all.

I agree about signing him on the cheap. Don't get me wrong about Hairston. I loved having him on the Reds last season. He was a positive influence in the clubhouse and the team won games when he was playing. I'm glad he's back, but I just don't want him to be back to start in LF. They need power from the right-side and in the OF not two versions of the same kind of player (Hairston & Taveras). There isn't really anyone left though other than Man-Ram.

Sports talk here in Cincy is saying the Reds are close to a deal for Luis Gonzalez.
What in the hell are they thinking??? Bringing in a 41 year old LH OF??
He hit .261 with 8 hrs and 47 rbi's last year with the Marlins.
Do we really want Gonzo to play over Dickerson/Hopper??
There is an article on MLB.com about the Reds close to signing Gonzo.
This makes no sense to me at all.

I'm baffled if this is true and he ends up as a Red. let's let a washed up, former roid-user play in the outfield and take away time from any one of the young guys with good potential. Yeah, that sounds right.

What the **** is Jocketty thinking?

Well the article does say that he is more interested in the Reds then they are interested in him. But when Walt was asked about it he did say talks are going on. Why wouldnt he just say "we have no room for an over the hill, washed up, former roid user"?
Give me a Dickerson/Hopper platoon over this roid head any day!

This is part of the reason why I'm just not as excited about this Reds season as seasons in the past. Stupid moves like this. The whole Corey Patterson thing last year just blew my mind. And clogging the bases. Ugh.
