Fatter players in the '70? It's weird, every time I see highlights of games where the teams wore throwbacks, the jerseys always seem too big. Those would fit comfortably on Prince Fielder and a few other guys.

        Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds

Season gets worse and worse. Also behind Pirates now for last place, sweet.

Aaron Harang returned to Cincinnati last night and had an emergency appendectomy.

He’s probably done for the season.

“He’s not supposed to do anything for three weeks,” Dusty Baker said.

No word on who will make Harang’s start Wednesday in Milwaukee. I’d guess Kip Wells.

“It’s been hell, ain’t it?” Baker said. “Whoever said injuries aren’t an excuse is lying. We get (Scott) Rolen back, and we lose Harang.”

Harang felt pain early Saturday morning. He was examined here. They caught it early enough that he was OK to ride back. Equipment manager Rick Stowe drove him. Doctors did not want him to fly.

Let me ask you all a question...would you risk a drive of 4.5 hours with an appendicitis or just get the surgery done in that city your in? That was the part that grabbed me about that little article. I've never experienced that kind of pain in that area but when I feel discomfort, I always wonder whether it could be my appendix. If I start having more acute pain and I'm blowing lunch on top of it, I'm getting myself to a hospital. But, point is, I don't think I would personally risk a drive even that long when I have no idea how bad it is. Maybe the training staff examined him thoroughly enough to determine that it was safe to do it. I wasn't ther eand am no doctor.

            I really like Drew Stubbs!
Another hr yesterday and he already has a few stolen bases, he will be our CF for years to come. Bye Bye Willy cant say I am going to miss you!
Stubbs is also a really good CF, Bronson made a crack at Willy the other day.
He said with Drew in CF he doesnt have to worry about any balls hit toward CF anymore. Sounds like he was worried when Willy was out there.
They have now won what 7 of 8? Also how nice is it to have a good defensive 3B? I said it when they traded for him, Rolen makes the pitchers job so much easier he fields everything.
I dont think people realize how much better our D is with Stubbs in CF and Rolen at 3B.

Stubbs is still figuring out the hitting part of his game but I've been impressed with him so far. Too bad there were only like 1,000 people at the afternoon game yesterday to watch him leadoff with that HR. A woman I work with went to the game with her husband and she said it was weird seeing the place so empty but with a game going on.

not to be Mr. Negative because I like Stubbs too, but I recall it was about this time last year when Reds fans were going gaga over Dickerson. I tried to tell people it would be a different scenario if Dickerson started the season with the team in 09, and he did and it was. I'm not trying to say I told you so or anything like that but when I see late season call-ups play well I take it with a big grain of salt. I hope Stubbs continues his good play as long as he can (or at least as long as he's wearing a Reds uni) but it'll be a different world for him if he breaks camp with the team next spring.

Totally different players and a terrible comparision.
Stubbs is a bona fide prospect, one of the biggest prospects in all of baseball.
He tore up every level of the minors.
Dickerson was a 8 year minor leaguer who struggled for alot of years in the minors.
Stubbs was a high draft pick and a college all american, um Dickerson was a very low pick that most teams never thought would make the majors.
Again you calling Stubbs a typical late season call up is humorous, you must not pay attention to baseball prospects like I do.
And by the way how can you tell us all "I told you so about Dickerson?" He has had a very productive year this year when he has been healthy.

I didn't mean it to say that everything around the situation was the same, just meant that the Reds had an OF called up late last season who did well.

Out of the gates Dickerson was horrible, and yeah he was affected by not getting regular playing time, etc. But still, he looked lost when he started the season and that came when there were people pretty hyped about him.

I never said typical late-season call up, just a late season call up. He was called up late August (20 or 21st I believe, I'd have to look it up) so obviously that's before Sept. 1 when rosters can go back to 40. So I mean yeah it's a little bit different, but it's not like Stubbs was called up in June or July. Stubbs and Dickerson both came to the team late in the season when the Reds were way out of contention.

I really don't care when players were drafted. I mean there's countless tales of players drafted high and sucking as well as players drafted low and becoming All-Stars.

I'm not trying to come off as a Stubbs *****, I would love for the guy to be one of the premier outfielders in the NL for the Reds for a long time. I just know when I see players come up late in the season and play well that it's easier to do that than it is play well from beginning of the season and on.

How nice would have it been to have Stubbs the entire year. What is all this talk about the Reds being serious players for Hanley Ramirez next year.

Where did you hear/see that? And why would the Fish be dumb enough to trade him? I'd have to see what they were asking for otherwise the Reds would be dumb for getting rid of a lot of their young pitching for him. Don't get me wrong, Ramirez is an absolute stud but I don't want him if it means sacrificing a lot of our stud, young pitchers. What good is having Ramirez is there's no pitching?

Part of me almost wants them to deal Votto though. Send him home to Toronto. He might be happier there. Might get Adam Lind in return too. Yonder could slide into the starting spot at 1B.

Total and absolute speculation on my part. I'll totally admit because of what happened with him taking a break earlier in the season, the fact he hit .220 in August makes me wonder if his head still isn't right. Or, it could just be a slump. He's hitting better this month so far. I feel bad that I've fallen into the speculation trap. It just makes me wonder. I don't want the Reds to trade him. I'm a big Votto fan. I'd love to keep him, Yonder, Francisco, et al. Again though, if he isn't happy, which I have no evidence that is the case (just speculation on my part looking at stats), and doesn't think it would change staying here, they should look into dealing him to the Jays so he'd be at home. That's all I'm saying. Definitely keep him otherwise.
