Also he has 2 opt out clauses in there.

A lot of people are seeing "two opt outs" and immediately freaking out. Technically it's only one opt out with two vesting options. If he reaches a certain number of plate appearances (which he should, unless an injury occurs) then he'll trigger it in 3 years. If not, it will surely vest in year 4.

I might be in the minority here, but I love it. Opt-out or not, we'll have him long enough to make some noise. I can't wait to see who the Cardinals go and spend money on to keep pace.

Clearly Theo was not BS'ing about '16 being the year. Wow.

I like the opt-out, even if he has 3 great years.

but that's because they are nearly as irrational as fans are.

Arizona and NY will have something to say before it's over; each of them have the kind of pitching staff that can presumably carry a team on its back, a la last year's Cardinals.

Best shot to improve the Cubs' performance? choke up with two strikes...

            C-Montero
            1B-Rizzo
            2B-Zobrist
            3B-Bryant
            SS-Russell
            LF-Schwarber
            CF-Heyward
            RF-Soler

Hard to be mad at that. A right-handed bat to platoon Schwarber might be nice.

I think we all knew at least one of Baez, Castro, and Soler would be gone...are we going to see another one exit?

Maybe Zobrist plays a little LF vs lefties and Baez is at 2B that might work out no?

I am the biggest J-Hey fan. I will now follow the Cubs. Who is going to be the lead off hitter. More than likely Heyward. All I can say he is a blessed young man. 23 million for a lead off hitter. Heyward pulled off the Joe Flacco. He betted on himself and won. Big! Best of luck to the Cubs, even if they're playing my Braves..

Heyward is the most likely. Maybe Maddon plays around with Zorbist/Heyward with the top 2 spots in Spring Training. If they could trade Soler and bring Fowler back, that would be the best outcome in my mind.

According to Dan Szymborski, Jason Heyward's ZiPS projection says he'll be worth $237MM over the life of the 8-year contract. So, that's $53MM surplus value.

Looks like, barring a Godfather offer, Soler will be the Cubs RF in 2016

Unless the best pitcher or center fielder in the game becomes available, Jorge Soler will be the Cubs' starting right fielder next April.

I know I am late, but think this is the best decision they have made.

23 years old and all the tools, and has shown that he can be a dominant force at the plate. Excited to see what he does this year, with full health and a full season/off-season to implement the swing/approach changes he had been working on.

That, and the team will have a full allotment of bullets to use at the trading deadline.
