Re: Seattle Mariners 2012 team thread

There's so much to be pissed off about after tonight's game.

At what point does Felix Hernandez throw his hands in the air and give up on this organization? I might not be rational right now, but the kid is an absolute ace in his best years are he is being wasted. It is beyond sad to me. He is probably the biggest pitching talent this organization has ever seen, or will ever see, and his talent is being wasted (all due respect to Randy Johnson). Games like tonight are not rare occurrences for him and you have to wonder when he will get fed up.

He says all the right things to the media, but when I see him on the mound, I see a competitor who has a fire in his belly. At some point, all of this has to be too much. Something has to give.

I understand the position the team is in now in regards to the young players, but it is still frustrating. Wedge seems to think Olivo is deserving of at-bats and it just boggles my mind. I am a slow burning fuse, but some of his decisions are getting to me.

It's all just getting to me. One of the best performances of Felix's career tonight and it's wasted. If it weren't the norm, then you get over it and move on as a fan... But it's not rare, it happens way too much and I am sick and tired of it.

Well put. I keep hoping Olivo can turn it around because, despite what everybody seems to be saying, I don't think Jaso is that great. He's average at best and not the solution to the catcher issue.

I still can't believe League blew that save.

He is always good for 4-5 mind numbing outings a year. I can't complain much though, the M's stole a game in Arlington last week in the same manner. It happens to everybody.

Catcher is a major void, as is CF right now. I don't care how poorly Guti hits when he gets back, I miss his range in center.

This team needs a catcher, a CF , and SS. The problem is the organization is loaded with corner guys. Nick Franklin is a ways off. We need to get offense where we can. I'm still not sold on Ichiro batting third. This is what you do with a guy after an off year?

Guti hitting .250 , 15hr 60 rbi is ok in CF if he can ever get back to that.

The funny thing is , that there are a lot of bodies we can't find a place for. Maybe Carp hits for power, but this team HAS to teach Montero to catch. And I'm really not liking Ichiro on the same team as Figgins.

Seager is a stud, but he's not the 25hr's that you need from a 3b.

On paper, Figgins and Ichiro should have been amazing. Two high average hitters who can steal any base anytime anywhere, but it just never panned out. First of all, Figgins was awful for the past few years, and Seattle never had anybody to drive in those two. If the M's had two good power hitters, which we hope Montero and...cough....cough...Smoak will be, I think Ichiro and Figgins would be a great one-two punch.

Let's face it folks, Seattle is 7-7. It could be worse for a team like this. Kyle Seager looks good, Blake Beaven is pitching well, as is Hector Noesi. There are positives here, so let's not constantly dwell on the negatives.

Re: Seattle Mariners 2012 team thread

              This team is maddening.

I saw a stat today where there has been 38 occurrences of Felix going at least seven innings while giving up less than two runs and he either gets a no-decision or takes the loss...

I watched an interview with him and his eyes were pissed off. He tries to smile, he says the right thing, but he wants to win and he wants his starts to quit being wasted.

It is just so frustrating to watch.

Maybe I am kidding, or maybe I'm not... But will it ever be time to move in the fences at Safeco? I am just thinking right and left center field. It might be a bad idea.

Other teams seem to hit homers fine in Safeco. I think we just need better power hitters

The traditional 'power' positions consist of Ichiro, Carp/Saunders, Figgins/Seager, and Smoak. Smoak is the only one with the potential to consistently hit 25+ HR/year. The M's don't supplement that lack of power at non-power positions. Bringing in the fences won't make the M's any better.

Humber has a no hitter going into the 7th. Offense clearly an issue.

I had no delusions of a successful season, but I figured we'd see some growth in the hitters. The hack-attack approach Wedge has implemented is a disaster so far. If things don't change in the next few months, we might be seeing the last of Wedge in Seattle.

I agree, the Mariners are trying to make it up to Felix to try and keep him (He says he wants to stay but the M's are pretty good at giving up their elite players) by trying to be the 'offense' team. What they need to do is:

                            1. Cut Olivo, put Jaso at catcher, and slowly let Montero progress into more catching opportunities. A career designated-hitter rarely, if ever, works out.
                            2. Tell Micheal Saunders that he is not a home run guy. He is doing better with this this season, but I still see a lot of pop ups and monster hacks that are making his spot in the lineup worthless.
                            3. Work on small ball, bring in a more NL style of play with steals, squeezes, bunts, and singles. While Safeco is spacious, the want to hit doubles turns into the want to hit homeruns. I think if they play small ball the discipline will improve, strikeouts will drop, and better hits will come forth.
                            4. Prepare the minors; but not rush them. I don't want to see Taijuan rushed into the Majors halfway through the season only to see him throw out his arm. The M's need to only call him up in September.

                              Rock bottom in my eyes.

I think if things continue, Jack Z and Wedge will be finished in Seattle after this season.

Z has drafted well, but his other acquisitions leave quite a bit to be desired so far.

On the plus side, Hultzen won his first game of the year, tossing 6.1 innings. He didn't give up a run and had five K's.

James Paxton got shelled in his last start. I think his line was something like two innings, seven hits, seven runs (six earned), walked five and struck out one. His ERA went from 1.20 to 4.15.

                                Ouch.
