There has to be a balance. Obviously trading Acuna for Realmuto would have been a disaster.

But we have all these highly-touted prospects who either are overrated to begin with or aren't properly developed. And they shuttle back and forth until they lose all value. Nobody wants to repeat the Texeira trade, but at some point you have to identify which prospects are keepers and then take a risk and trade the ones who aren't for help.

It's frustrating to say we need pitching when the entire rebuild was centered around pitching.

      Re: 2021 Atlanta Braves

The loss today means that barring a series sweep against the Mets, that the earliest we could see this team go above .500 this season would be Friday May 21. Which equates to 28% of the way through the season.

Unfortunately Ynoa's struggles today were a little expected. Despite the low ERA, he had given up a ton of hard hit balls in his other starts. Today the defense wasn't able to come up with those. He's going to need to develop a 3rd pitch to have long term success.

It was kind of amazing that they managed to make a game out of it after going down 8-0, and it's good to see Ozzie going well. This continues to be the most painful offense to watch since the homerun or strikeout years of Upton, Heyward, Uggla, etc though. 2-10 today with RISP.

Oh and 6 more walks by the bullpen.

Huascar Ynoa to the IL after punching something with his right hand and breaking it.

First, hasn't he ever heard never throw a punch with your pitching hand?

Second, is it time to tank yet for a 2022 draft pick?

This team is garbage. 12+ innings by the SP the last 2 days giving up just 4 ER, while the opposing team uses their bullpen for 15 innings and you lose both games.

This offense is inexplicable. They lead the majors in home runs, but they are only #11 in runs/game because they don't ever do anything else.
#22 in BA and #19 in OBP

There is a level of "unluckiness" with it as the team ranks #28 in BABIP while ranking #13 in hard hit balls, but you don't do yourself any favors when you strike out all the time. I'd also expect to rank higher than #13 in hard hit balls with Acuna, Freddie and Ozuna in the lineup.

Dansby is on pace for like 200 strikeouts, and that isn't an exaggeration.

              Re: 2021 Atlanta Braves

Snit's going to do his best to run whatever few successful arms this bullpen does have into the ground.

Matzek has actually been pretty good, and he pitched the 8th on Saturday when the team was up 5.

Chris Martin, who had some shoulder troubles already this season and is probably the best arm we have in the bullpen, pitched today with a 6 run lead in the 8th. He's only been back from the IL for 10 days, and he's already pitched 5 games, 2 of which the team had at least a 4 run lead in the 8th.

Even Luke Jackson....despite his limitations and unclean innings that will most certainly lead to a regression of his ERA, he is still being used like one of the top arms in the team, and yet they still threw him today with a 6 run lead.

All of this is made worse by the fact that Atlanta has been carrying 10 bullpen arms at all times this year. Surely there are better options than to use your horses in blow outs. Especially against teams that are limited offensively.

The team looked really good over the last 4 days. Hopefully that means that they are finally returning to form, but we also have to remember that the Pirates a not a good baseball team. The real test is up next. Over the next 18 days the Braves play 15 games, all against tough opponents. 6 of those games are against the Mets and Phils, and given the state of the division we can't overlook the 4 against the Nats. I don't think that it's a stretch to say that these next 2 1/2 weeks will make or break this season.

Team can set themselves up pretty nicely over these next two weeks. I expect them to be 1st in the division and over .500 finally at the end of the stretch, but not because I think the team is turning a corner and becoming a contender. I think the division is just that bad. This team has the talent to be a contender, but they have a lot of holes to plug before then.

                  Re: 2021 Atlanta Braves

Ozzie's error didn't help, but Morton looked awful in that first inning. Is there a team that has hit more batters with bases loaded this year?

Despite the early troubles he really settled in after that which was promising against a good Boston lineup. The starters have put together quite a run now. Unfortunately Snit's decision to pitch Martin with a 6 run lead on Sunday looks even worse today since he apparently wasn't going to use him in a close game tonight. On the plus side Santana was able to get the 3 outs he needed tonight, but it sure seems like it would be smarter to use guys like Santana in games that aren't close and use your horses when you actually need them.

Ozuna's finger did not look good. Early reports are dislocation, and he will see a specialist in Atlanta for a more thorough diagnosis. Hopefully it's nothing serious and only requires a short stint on the IL. It wasn't pretty, but I'm also hoping that this could be a blessing in disguise. The offense still isn't where it needs to be with the other guys, but Ozuna is the only guy in the lineup who hasn't been able to get hot at some point. We're 48 games into the season and he's still slugging under .400. Just about any warm body in LF would be a boost both offensively and defensively, at least in the short term. My hope is that this also gives him a chance to reset his season similar to what happened with Fried after his short trip to the IL, so that when he comes back he's like the Marcell that he has been for most of his career.

                    Ozuna out six weeks.

Who plays LF? We're already down to Acuna and spare parts in the OF.

                      Inciarte tonight.

I would guess that Carmago is the first one to get a call, and maybe we see some kind of platoon between him and Adrianza.

Based on Snit's comments we could also see Demeritte or Almonte get a shot at it.

No great options, but with the way that Ozuna had been performing it should still be an upgrade.

Not surprising at this point, but Soroka won’t pitch this season.

                          Re: 2021 Atlanta Braves

Good news is that the Braves were actually better than .500 for the month of May.

Bad news is they were only 1 game over even with 4 against the pirates and 3 against the injury riddled brewers. That left them just 7-10 against everyone else, including 1-4 against the Mets who may be the most injured team in baseball.

And just to pile on. The earliest that we can possibly see this team go over .500 is past the 1/3 mark of the season. Also, the lowest win total that any NL team has had to make the 1 game playoff is 87. To get there they need to go 62 and 48 the rest of the way. To put that into perspective, that is the winning percentage of a 91 win team over a full season.

More bad news on the Ozuna front. Ken Rosenthal of the athletic is reporting that it will be very hard for atlanta to void the 65m contract.

I'm beating a dead horse, but I hate that Smyly contract so much. Hated it when we signed him; hate it today.

If we don't sign Smyly, we theoretically have money to keep Duvall instead of non-tendering him, and we're able to keep Melancon and Greene.

Have to think the bullpen would be better with Melancon and a full season of Greene, instead of the mediocrity we've run out there.

Couldn't predict Ozuna, but Duvall would have been nice to have in LF right about now, rather than Almonte.

And I'm not sure the rotation is any better now with Smyly than it would have been with Wright or Wilson. I really wanted to see what they could do with a full season after their playoff performances. We've hindered the development of so many of our pitchers it's not funny.

                              Re: 2021 Atlanta Braves

I have to assume that AA was feeling snake bit after 2020 when they just used the bullpen all year after injuries, opt outs and poor performances left the team in a state where they legitimately spent most of the season with just 1 real starter. Last year's team would not have survived 162.

The problem though is this wasn't last year's team. Anderson was slotted for the rotation Day 1 instead of half way through the season. You already signed Charlie Morton to give a veteran and stable presence in the rotation. You still had Max Fried, and they were expecting to get Soroka back at some point. That's 4 starters by May that they expected to feel really good about. Now, they did need to cover the period until Soroka got back, and we all know that it takes more than 5 starters to cover a full season. Between Wright, Wilson, and all of the other pitching assets that they had, they should have expected to be able to cover at least part of that. Having a strong bullpen would had made it easier on all parties involved.

So like you said. Bad job the by the GM.

Tucker Davidson being recalled to start tomorrow. I'm sure he'll be sent back down after the game, regardless of how he does.

I'm not sure how we expect the young pitchers to get comfortable when we shuttle them back and forth.
