EDIT - After looking at some stats I found these tidbits. Last year Heredia had a .216 BAA vs LH and .333 BAA vs RH, yet he faced 84 righties and 74 lefties. In comparison Mike Myers, who had similar BA splits faced 103 lefties and only 61 righties. The idea of a LOOGY is to only use him vs lefties because they tend to get pounded by righties. In the cases of Stanton and Heredia it seems to me like mismanagment by Torre rather than fault of the pitchers.

Re: Official New York Yankees Bleacher Creatures Team Thread
Originally posted by camulosYah, but looking at the stats, he's been dominant against lefties and most of his struggles have come against righties. Maybe he's just being used wrong?
While his numbers were definately good against LH batters, he seemed to struggle in the clutch situations. Maybe he didn't give up a hit, but he would walk the guy or give up a deep sac fly or something.
I've watched most of our games this year and I hadn't looked at Stanton's splits in a while and I was shocked to see he was doing that good against leftys. I guess he just wasn't doing it when it really mattered."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: Official New York Yankees Bleacher Creatures Team Thread
Looking over Stanton's splits again I'm pretty disspointed they don't have his ERA split for RHB vs. LHB.
Only thing to help determine this, he'd given up
6 RBI's in 34 AB's for lefties
7 RBI's in 23 AB's for righties
He has given up 11 RBI's that are credited to him though, and the Robert's HR was the first HR he's allowed all year.
So....
I guess that despite his average against LHB was much better, LHB were still getting through to him one way or another.
Despite all of this, Stanton was gone after this season and he wasn't really gonna contribute much for the rest of this season, so I like the move of dumping him."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

vs LH: 0.93
vs RH: 20.77
He's only allowed 1 ER vs LH batters. I'm guessing the RBI's you see are inherited runners. These can be misleading because it could come on sac-flys, fielders choice, etc.

Is Paul Quantrill really dead? I've watched pretty much no Yankee games this year so I don't know if it's a case of age/injury/or mechanics?“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Quantril has had nothing ever since late last season. His fastball rarely excedes the 84-86 range, from what I've seen, and none of his secondary pitches have been sharp at all. That sharp breaking ball he used to have just isn't there for him and hasn't been for awhile. When he came on in relief in game 4 of the ALCS last year, I knew the game was over (there wasn't a doubt in my mind that he could get by Manny and Ortiz without allowing a run), thats how poor he had been down the stretch.Comment

That is a sobering and truthful assessment on your part. It's pretty sad to see Quantrill's career end like this. He was one of the good guys for a long time for the Jays.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Official New York Yankees Bleacher Creatures Team Thread
I have no problem in seeing either one of these guys go. Like ehh said, Mike was gone at the end of the year and it's hard to justify tying up a roster spot with that much cash for a loogy. That being said, the Yanks still need someone dependable to face lefties in late inning and clutch situations.
However, as most followers of baseball know, the Yankees slow sputtering decline is still attributed to no farm system. While spending boatloads of money brings in all-star talent, that group is now old and most are in the twilight of their careers. George has always had this problem. One would think he would have learned his lesson in the aftermath of what happend from 81-94. He made the team great for a few years and then started trading away any resemblance of talent to get some big name or overpriced guy who was past his prime. Claudell Washington, Steve Balboni, Danny Tartabull, and a few others come to mind while getting rid of guys like Al Leiter, Jay Buhner and quite a few others that went on to have above average careers. The farm system is not the answer to everything but the Yanks need to find the right mix of young talent and all-stars. The tricky part is finding the right guys who can handle the NY media. As much disdain as I have for Boston, Theo and comapny are doing a great job of mixing the young with the guns. Baltimore is on the up and up and even the Jays are putting together a nice system. George and Cash need to start looking at the bigger picture.S.O.S Crew

There are major issues in NY. It seems like some people just are not cut out to pitch there, Johnson included until proven otherwise.I do because I can, I can because I want, I want because you say I can'tComment
