Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread

Edgar Rentaerror is at it again, luckily we get out of that inning unscathed.

I kinda wish they had game threads here, but it would be pointless with the little activity the baseball forum gets on its own without so many sub-forums.

Manny hits his 20th career grand slam and his third of the season. He only trails Gehrig now for most grand slams of all time.

Great effort by Wake tonight in going 8 innings. With Timlin's quick 9th it gave some much needed rest to the bullpen. Timlin got his 2nd save of the year.

Francona was just on WEEI and said that Schilling will be going to the bullpen when he returns after the break. He will pitch out of the bullpen in his rehab assignment in Pawtucket tomorrow. This is very interesting and must admit, not something I saw as a reasonable solution.

Just read about that on sportsline.com and I must say I'm actually excited. I didn't even think that for 1 or 2 weeks Schill could be in the bullpen, because like Terry said, he could be one of the best 1-2 inning guys in the league for that week. He's got powerful stuff that you'd want relief guys to have, so this could be a good short-term solution while the mess gets sorted out and while he gets healthy.

Very interesting. So this is just a temporary thing with Schill? I wonder how effective he'll be out of the pen.

Schill was shaky in his first 2 rehab starts.

Once he comes back into the rotation I think Arroyo will get bumped back into the bullpen. I think he's proved he belongs in the starting rotation.

That just proves how loaded we are in starting pitching.

                        I absolutely love this move

I know the speculation on this is that it is not permanent, but I have a gut feeling that this will last until the end of the season. It also sets Theo up in a position where he doesn't have to overpay as much as before for some bullpen relief.

Can anyone picture the applause for Schilling coming out of the bullpen in the 9th inning at Fenway to close out a game? my god

He wont be closing out games to start off with, but I wouldn't be surprised if Foulke goes on the DL to see Schill get a few chances, however I'd rather have Schilling in the rotation

I'm not reading into this move too much. I think it's exactly what Francona said, a way to have Schilling make an immediate impact on the team. It sounds like his troubles have been mechanical so coming out of the bullpen will allow him to pitch more often and evaluate his progress. In the meantime he should help solidify the bullpen. When Schilling is ready to return to the rotation, hopefully the Foulke situation will be sorted out.

Yea, well how hard to you have to look to get a starter of Schil's caliber? Very hard, when healthy. It ain't nearly as hard to get a very reliable closer. Schil is starter Terry!

I agree. I'm happy with the current rotation and I think we can get to the playoffs with them but I would NOT be comfortable going into a 7 game series with a rotation of Clement, Wake, Arroyo and Wells.
