Re: Official Boston Red Sox 2005 Thread

I haven't been following it too much, but what's the word on a potential added arm for the bullpen before the deadline?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but if the Sox come up with a possible deal for Burnett... any chance they could throw in some extra guys in order for the Marlines to throw in Mota, who I've heard their aren't 100% thrilled with?

At this point, it's wait and see. Not enough teams are ready to deal with a month left before the trade deadline. They also think Foulke and Embree might be able to straighten out before then.

If they do make a deal, I think they'll give a prospect to Seattle for Eddie Guardado and fix the rest from within with guys like Arroyo, Papelbon, Alvarez and possibly Hansen.

Like I said in the other thread, Guradado's arm troubles this year, while they havent affected his pitching yet, make me very wary of him in the second half of the year.

Guardado would be the perfect pickup. Foulke could be used strictly for save situations and wouldn't have to keep coming in when the game is tied, or when we're behind, even. Eddie can pitch to both left and right handed hitters.

The only thing I'm worried about is how much we would have to give up to acquire Guardado. In a perfect world they would take Kelly Shoppach and one of our second or third tier prospects, perhaps Chip Ambres. I don't think they would go for that however, so I think it will take Shoppach and either Papelbon or Lester. For that price, I'm just not sure if it's worth it long term.

Guardado won't take that much. He's old and doesn't have much of a future with Seattle. No way the Sox give Papelbon or Lester. I think Seattle would be happy if they got a B prospect in return.

They could use a young catcher, who can play MLB ball in a year or at the end of this one. I wouldnt mind risking the arm problems for Shoppach, who is unbelivably expendable right now.

Shoppach is expendable right now, but I don't want to just ship him out in any deal.

I'd love to add Guardado but I don't want him to break down shortly after playing some games in the new uniform.

I'm looking foward to this weekends 3 game set.

I'm a fan of both teams but I'll be rooting for the Jays!! There were rumblings of Hillenbrand maybe heading to the Red Sox but JP said he has no interest in trading him.

The Sunday matchup looks like a real dandy with Doc vs. Arroyo. I expect another excellent outing from Doc and I'm sure he will impress Francona enough to select him to start the all-star game.

Me too. It seems like we havn't seen much of the Jays this year.

I'd say the pitching matchup favors the Red Sox tonight with Clement vs Lilly tonight, but the Jays have the advantage on Sat. and Sun. with Wells vs Chacin and Arroyo vs Halladay.

If Philadelphia falls out of the wild card race a little more as the deadline gets closer, do you guys think their is any chance they might look to unload Wagner?

Definately. With Tim Worrell coming back soon and Ugeth Urbina in the bullpen the Phillies could look to unload Wagner whether they are in it or not. Wagner is a free agent after this season and it is unlikely the Phillies will re-sign him, maybe the Phillies could get a couple of players for him at the deadline.

I like the move DH'ing Mirabelli tonight. He's a good hitter so anytime we can get him into the lineup more is good. Ortiz is a .105 hitter vs Lilly while Doug is .385 with 3 HR's. Weird to see him batting 3rd though.

                            This isn't cool....

We let Lilly wiggle out of some jams one too many times, and aside from the poor 3rd inning Clement was pitching pretty well.

Reese Johnson got the best of us again, which sucks.

We really need BP help, Mike souldn't have been brought in at that situation IMO.

Holy moly what a game for the Jays. Let's hope the bats keep it up for the rest of the series. I knew the Sox bullpen was bad but this is just crazy.
