You say pay the players...I say how the hell does UAB (who had to cut their football team less than 5 years ago because of expenses) pay every single athlete that is enrolled at the school? This is something that is never brought up when this topic is discussed, yea some of these power 5 schools can pay their athletes but how do these schools that never make a playoff/bowl game and get that extra revenue do the same? Because if you make where the athlete gets whatever money he can make on the side, you're going to parity in college athletics because guys like Khalil Mack won't go to Buffalo instead he'll go Boston College (thinking of a bad team in a P5 conference) or because Boston College will give him a better chance at making that side money.

I say let the players make money off their likeness. Paying them is Slippery slope. But letting them make their money off their actually likeness. I'm cool with.

Also to add
If I actually did say pay them my bad.
But this keeps happening.... Know why? We change the rules. And it still happens. Huge call me banners come down championships championships get taken away. And still people are dining ways to pay these poor kids money they need.
Something has to happen here.

Re: The Official "FBI Investigation" Thread
Harsh penalties and making the players liable for any penalties against the school, make it not worth it when the school comes after you for $millions.
If you don't make it to the NBA, they can't sue you for much, but if you do, you could be costing them a lot of money being banned from post season play.
Same thing for coaches if they are liable.

Edit- looks like Miller has to pay $300,000 if found to violate NCAA rules

Re: The Official "FBI Investigation" Thread
But on the likeness thing is a slippery slope as well, IMO, because that kills any chance of a small school like Buffalo, Indiana St. to land that transcendent player (Mack, and Larry Bird respectively) that would bring a little bit of notoriety to their programs. Because would you rather ball at out a small mid major, where you won't see money unless you make and dominate in a bowl game for football or make the NCAA tourney and then dominate on a cinderella story team or would rather go to a lesser school in a P5 conference where your games will be on national or regional TV nearly every week and all you have to do is have that one good game against a rival and you're set for that entire season? Also how does the 3rd string RG or the 13th girl on the swimming and diving team get any money from their likeness?Comment

What you think we should do? Because rules aren't doing much here. These players are are either poor. And looking for the best situation money wise. This seems like it happens every 3 years now. Hearing Napier talk about bring hungry ain't cool. I know they changed the rule on that after his interview. But these schools make millions of dollars and they can't feed them.

But if they want to get paid, I'd personally consider making a completely drastic change. You drop all athletic scholarships and they have to get the financial aid from the school and state just like every other student on campus, plus you can do either of the 2 major options brought up all the time when it comes to paying athletes, a straight cash sum of X amount per year they are at the school (my preferable way because of the points I mentioned earlier) or they can do the likeness way. And that money can be used on whatever the student wants whether it be spending it on clothes, shoes, electronics, cars, food, etc.Comment

Re: The Official "FBI Investigation" Thread
Crazy how this is happening right as the sports world is getting ready to turn to college hoops. It's been a long time coming, though. Just let these players in on a piece of the pie. Stop being so greedy NCAA. Let a player own his/her likeness and profit off it while in college. The extra they make can be verified and taxed and everything can be on the up and up. No more underhanded stuff.Comment

Re: The Official "FBI Investigation" Thread
Here's my solution and I'd love to hear other opinions on it:
1. Allow 18 years olds to go to the NBA even if they can't play until they are 20. They'd play for he teams GLeague until they are old enough. This allows the players who have no intention of being students to play and hone their games and get paid. It could also infuse the development league with some star power and something to look forward to for the future. Ben Simmons had no interst in class. I don't blame him, dude knows he's league bound and set to make hundreds of millions. These prospects are better off developing than wasting time on campus.
2. Insure players who do play college ball whatever the commiserate draft pay is for them in case of injury. Also allow them to get endorsements and the like.
3. I was reading about how the NBA vets are the ones most against high schoolers because they'd take their roster spot and the NBA is more concerned with them than high schoolers. This way, they'd be good too because the players couldn't take their spot until they are 20 which is what 2 years of college would be anyway.
4. It would allow college ball to flourish without the underhanded stuff. Players could play for their school if they want and stay long enough to get an actual degree. No more sham 1 and done stuff. If a player wants to leave after 1 year they can. They'd still get drafted they'd just play in the development league for a year (if they aren't 20).
5. I think it could also dissuade tanking. If there's say, a high schooler you like, take him with your pick and watch over his development.
6. As a gamer It could allow for the return of college sports games. EA/2K could liscence with the schools and players. And they players could get a piece of the deal. Everyone wins.Comment

Re: The Official "FBI Investigation" Thread
NCAA/ College Basketball needs to look in the mirror to fix their problems as opposed to blaming it on the NBA for its age limit.
These problems existed well before the rule. They need to figure out how to create more benefits which would give players more reason to stay and to create a rule book they can actually enforce."Ma'am I don't make the rules up. I just think them up and write em down". - Cartman

Re: The Official "FBI Investigation" Thread
I can see both sides of it. The obvious flaw in letting players make money on the side is that you’ll have boosters at bigger schools like Kentucky just pay kids to come to their school at rates that a lot of schools can’t match. The same issue exists if you let schools directly pay students. But having said that, this stuff is clearly already happening so maybe actually making it legal could improve things? Idk. It’s a tough predicament. I definitely think kids should be able to at least make money off their likeness but I do fear what it will do to the sport once they freely allow it to happen.

Maybe the "likeness" money in terms of video games etc. is done in a revenue sharing setup to be divide by all schools? Would the money even be enough? Don't know.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

The 3rd string RG wouldn't get any money. There's no guarantee that he even has a scholarship now. What's the difference between some players getting money and some not and some athletes getting scholarships and some being walk-ons?Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it
