It's kind of tough to explain.

1 Star = Decrease in ratings next season.
2 Stars = Small Decrease in ratings next season.
3 Stars = No increase or decrease next season.
4 Stars = Small increase next season.
5 Stars = Large increase next season.

Say a guy like Anthony Bennett has 5 star potential. Obviously, he won't realize his full potential while shooting 22% from the field. So his potential will be, I dunno, 2 out of 5 stars full, with the other 3 stars empty, but still there, showing he can still be a 5 star potential player. But since he's at 2 stars, his ratings dip down a little (SKILLS, not athleticism).

So obviously, once Bennett reaches his prime, he loses the 5th star. After his prime is over, he loses his 4th, so he can no longer have large increases. As he grows older, he loses his 3rd star and his athleticism will deteriorate.
Hard code capping the player potential ceiling is what Madden used to have but people hated it. Basically, guys would find a low rated young guy like a running back who they could use to rush for 2000 yards a season. Typically, his tool would be great but "awareness" would be low, but the intelligence bit would be nullified by user control. And his overall potential would still be capped out exceedingly low, no matter what stats he put up.

Guys felt that killed realism. "If I want to take a raw guy and build him up, why should his overall attributes be capped artificially if he's performing like a star? Why should the CPU let me keep re signing him like a scrub when he's performing like a star?" And it was a legitimate gripe.

Not that everyone loves the more dynamic model Madden uses now, with a "development" rating that can be increased by points the player earns through performance, while those points can also by spent by the player for straight up attribute increases. But it's generally considered better than the old way by most.

Just allow us to fully edit ratings within each game mode like in CG and problem solved

That is a DAMN good idea. Having guys have to actually play to their potential to improve their ratings. I love it.

That's not the point. We want 30 team control so that we can avoid these idiotic trades that seem to occur every other day.

Yea realism is out the window when Ricky Rubio is being traded for back up PGs. Need to allow for total control because the logic clearly can't be fixed internally.

So you want one GM to control every team in the league?

You should propose this plan to Adam silver

A simple David Stern-like ability to veto CPU trades would go a long way of making MyGM more realistic.

I'll get right on that once I have to start sending paper work to the league offices to execute a trade in NBA 2K.

Until then, give us the freedoms requested, spread across however many modes it takes to accomplish it.

Leave MyGM as is, and give the folks who want more control an alternative. So simple, it's stupid.

Completely agree. This would be even better than turning CPU trades off. Just have a text box pop up saying the following trade has been agreed to, do you wish to allow or deny the trade.

What sorts of limits you do you think might be necessary?

                            This spawned another idea.

Trade logic is notoriously hard to build, although I'd love to take a whack at it-- but what if 2K crowd-sourced trade logic?

What if 2K supplimented and bolstered trade AI the same way Forza 5 uses "Drivatars" based on player behavior?

2K can collect and leverage data on what types of trades are proposed and rejected by players for their own teams. Does Klay Thompson get traded for scraps often in MyGM? No? Don't have the AI propose that type of trade. What if 2K also tabulated the types of trades that get rejected by folks with the Commissioner Override turned on vs ones that get approved, and tried to spot trends that cause rejections (old guy with a big contract vs young guy with rookie contract and high potential for example)?

Could be just as hard to build heuristic detection logic for, but maybe there's a way to tap into human knowledge so trades aren't completely bizarre. Unfortunately many basketball fans have terrible knowledge but it's better than the insanity that the CPU AI trade logic produces sometimes. At the very least crowd-sourcing will allow obvious data to rise-- like who do fans consider the untradeable cores of their teams, and which players have trade value and which don't.

I just can't see a system where you let the user block a very good trade only because it bones his team by making a competitor better. You know what I mean? Or something that provides feedback for the game to grade trade better going forward.

                              However...

That would be a mistake in my opinion. 90% of the time I read someone's MyGM story they are making tons of stupid trades. Not just unfair trades but stupid stuff like oh I wish the cavs got oladipo so let me trade Bennett and Dion Waiters for him.
