Yeah, but it's hard for him to get everything (especially when you consider all the historic teams as well).

I took a look in the 2K15 manual for PS4 and I don't think I recognize any of the names on the Character Art team as folks who've ever come around this way.

Have they released some new classic team pictures or something?

No 2k art devs do, to my knowledge, but that isn't necessary, anyone of the other devs (czar, etc) could very easily relay the word (this a 350 post thread, it sticks out like a sore thumb, or any of the legends' next-gen likenesses) to the art team, and if the art team actually did make any improvements, then I'm sure czar etc would have relayed it back to us. But they haven't.

Wow, wasn't all aware there were multiple devs or 2k reps that skim these boards that often..newer here. Well...

2K DEVS: SO PLEASED IF YOU MANAGED TO READ THIS THREAD IN REGARDS TO YOUR FANTASTIC IDEA OF IMPLEMENTING RETRO TEAMS TO THE GAME. ALTHOUGH ALL THE TEAMS ARE GREAT TO HAVE, WE REALLY MOSTLY CARE ABOUT VINCE CARTER, AND THE VINTAGE RAPTORS. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE ALL HIS SIGNATURE MOVES AND ATTACKS OF A YOUNG VINCE CARTER TO REALLY PUT US IN THE GAME AS THE DUNK LEGEND. WHEN WE COMPLAIN ABOUT MJ, WE REALLY MEAN THE MJ OF CANADA. HOPE YOU TAKE OUR LOVE FOR VINCE CARTER INTO DEEP CONSIDERATION AND MAKE HIM AS REAL TO LIFE AS POSSIBLE. THANKS FOR LISTENING.

Decided to pop in NBA 2K2 for some additional relativity on the matter, and to get a sense for the evolution and devolution of it all:

                Bill Russell - NBA 2K2:

                Bill Russell - NBA 2K12:

                Bill Russell - NBA 2K15:

If that's the case, how does one decide what gets created where? And does that create a division in art direction?

I think this is almost certainly the case. The next gen legends have a not-strongly-directed, mass produced look to them. Recreating all the legends for the new platform is at least somewhat labor intensive, so it was likely cranked out using existing assets but not necessarily with the same quality guidelines that were in place when the assets were first created as primary features in 2K11 and 2K12. It might have been almost entirely a different group of people that were given the existing work and asked to make the conversion.

The fact that 2K China isn't credited with 2K15 is a strong indicator this is the case since little work was done on the legends as well.

Just decided to go back and take a closer look at some of the older legends and you are exactly right. They definitely don't look "next-gen". It's almost like bad copies of the originals. Of course there were also moments before next gen was released when many were worried they might not even include classic teams anymore.

What's interesting is that such a large task and huge player set was included in the next gen release that wasn't going to strongly market them. Perhaps when 2K14's feature set was being planned, 2K wanted to blow off the doors with as much included from the last gen as possible and thought the conversion would go more straightforward than it did. I mean, take existing textures, combine with new normal/gloss/detail maps and shaders, put on new mesh, adjust and go, right?

There's also the fact that classic players can add a lot of interest to MyTeam as a huge revenue stream, so we ended with the surprising inclusion of so many classics, but without the seeming commitment to spend more than the minimum attention to detail than necessary.

If I'm not mistaken, the older 2K's, before 2K4 (at least 2K2 and 2K3 which are the oldest 2K I got to play...not including Action '98) also had great attention to detail when it comes to accessories. Legends or current players, they all had accurate accessories, some of them had their signature accessories.

The right accessories should be standard for the classics as they were a big deal back then.. If Houston Tmac doesn't have his signature leg brace, I quit.
