If I recall correctly this is what they did with NBA 2K14 on PS4 and Xbox one. The difference this year being that users can't swap skintones. (Maybe I'm wrong, I'm on PC and 2K14 for us was old gen)

Being a PC modder, I have taken a crack at editing the CAP 3D models in 2K13, 2K14,2K16, and 2K17. From what I can tell the the biggest reason 2K had to change their CAP system was due to the requests to use hair that the scanned models have. I will be looking into the CAP files next week when I get the game downloaded for PC and see if there is indeed any hope for 2K18 on the CAP front.
It may not be a popular opinion, but I much prefer this system to what we had. I'm a big ML guy and those generated players were awful looking. In addition to being terrible, they all kinda looked the same. It sucked the immersion right out for me. Now I really hope they can patch in sculpting as it was for those guys who liked it. I really do. But do not replace it with what it was. Barkley, Reggie and missing Legends aren't worth that to me. I don't much care for about draft class players looking like their real self.

Now if their plan all along was to take a "one step back, 3 steps forward" approach next year, then be honest and transparent about it so we can go ahead and get over it. (Or as one poster said earlier, wait to start implementing when you have the whole system upgraded.)

I am hopeful they will be able to do SOMETHING to enhance what they've done so far. We know they are getting the message. We will just have to wait and see if we can get a fix or an explanation.

I'm also hopeful: no option to edit signatures just can't be, especially when they talked about a jumpshot creator and the fact you can edit and add CAPs to an already ongoing MyLeague.

        Re: New CAP system

After going back and looking at the Brian Mazique video, I'm starting to think the CAP system he was messing with wasn't the final build, mainly because there is not option for player signatures nor can you edit badges, these are very vital to create a player as well, even 2k14 (with no facial edits) had signature option. I doubt 2K left those options completely out of CAPs, that would make less sense than taking out sculpting tools. Now that does not mean the creation of players isn't limited or hasn't taken a step back but it definitely lets me know their "should" be more to the CAP system than we have seen thus far, at least this is what I am hoping for. So I'm scaling back on my initial reaction to the cap a little, but the hype has definitely died for me.

I think most everyone agrees that the new CAPs are more realistic looking. The problem is the lack of sculpting - meaning that by year 3 or 4 of your MyLeague, you'll have dozens of players with the exact same face, a la Madden.

They've taken the deepest and most compelling franchise mode in sports video games and removed the depth.

Some of the depth. Still is the deepest franchise mode.

I get it. That's why I hope that sculpting can be patched in. I'm on board with that if it's a possibility. Overall though I prefer this over what we had. ML is pretty much all I play. I played with both generated classes, and some outstanding downloaded classes. Outside of few really well done faces they all looked similar to me. Even if duplicate looking players ends up being the case this year, at least I can manually change it. Again, I get the frustration. I just don't want to have this scrapped before we get a chance to really dig into it and see what can be done.

I wish Owen Good was still at kotaku. I want him to write about how 2k is nickel and diming it's fans just for facial hair and hair during the create a player part.

This is the first time I think that a triple A game is doing this. I'm trying to think of a game where you're able to scan your likeness then stonewalled because you have to buy hair/facial hair. I mean wtf....I can see mobile games doing this but not a game where it's full priced.

It should be done the way select the jump shot is done. You pick what you want then if you want to change it later you pay.

You're right, depth isn't the right word. Longevity perhaps.

Again, my assumption is in order to get the CAP system better, they maybe had to take a step back for now and add back in sculpting later.

They've been trending this direction...and next year will likely be even worse.
I think if you said last year "They are going to give you very limited hair options and start for charging it next year" people would have scoffed at that and said that's absurd. What's next? Eyebrows?
