Definitely would prefer this: Going a step further, perhaps having the option to hide and/or replace OVR with PER.
From a 2K marketing standpoint, OVR creates hype as 2K does press releases with OVR lists in July and August. I'm a hardcore basketball fan so, like preseason polls, OVR is not meaningful for me, but I get it for marketing.
I think a player is each of his attributes rather than a single number; that's why people argue about who is the all-time greatest. What the player produces with those attributes seems more accurately summarized by PER during gameplay.
It would be truly great if PER could be parlayed into more money at contract negotiation similar to the way stock prices fluctuate in the stock market. This would create situations where a player has a great season because of his teammates and the coach's system. He might receive an overpriced contract offer (related to the in-game hype) and have to move on to be the franchise-face with a team that is not 100% effective for him without the previous teammates and system. He would not do as well and would be perceived as a second or third option or maybe as a bust, depending on how badly he underperforms. Of course, the reverse could happen where a low PER would rate a bargain contract price. The player might have a breakout season and hype would swirl about a pay increase at the next negotiation a year (or years) later.
Accompanying headlines discussing all of this hype would add to the immersion.
