It's something that has always bugged me. I ended up just deciding to consciously take the leap of faith that there is clear consensus that it does help with completion odds, not just preserving energy. On the question, I have only ever seen people assert it helps with completion, never that it doesn't and is limited only to Stamina ramifications.

So...I don't know for sure, but have decided that consensus is correct. Especially that of Park enthusiasts who are very intimately tuned into their player's performance. (Even though there is plenty of misconception existing with regard to MyPlayer/Park stuff.)

On relentless finisher.. 0% scientific basis here but it certainly feels like it helps with completion. I can "feel" the finishing effects on my Amy Jordan with hid purple badge he tries to finish inside. Usually gets the job done on some crazy layups! Could just be Jordan in general though? Hehe

I think this is what confirms it for me. When it says that relentless badge reduces the impact it has on energy, you can notice that as you drive and get contact, the shooting bar moves really fast so it's really hard to time contact finishes if you don't hv badge. With the badge, even after a player receives contact, the shooting bar doesn't move nearly as fast allowing you to time it better for a full bar release or even a green release during layups. Hence, also increasing your chances at completing the contact layup. So, imo relentless definitely helps with finishing and not just energy impact.

I'm torn on the last badge slot for my Diamond McHale, should I go Relentless finisher or Defensive stopper?

Here's the badges he has right now

            Dream like up and under
            Drop Stepper
            Postpin
            Pick and roller
            Pick and popper
            Tireless scorer
            Brick Wall
            Posterizer
            Acrobat
            Putback
            Hustle rebounder
            Rim protector

I think it's gotta be Defensive Stopper. He has great defensive attributes, but that's somewhat mitigated if he can't drop opponents' scoring badges. I'd go with that without hesitation.

The thing is, Defensive Stopper, I think, is not going to negate badges that are mostly firing for close/post shots. I think if stuff like Posterizer get canceled out, and of course Dreamlike, it will be by Rim Protector.

Def Stopper will negate the outside shooting badges, and supposedly also Dimer too. Aside from negating Dimer buffs from a big passing out of the paint to an open shooter, Def Stopper will be useful for a big mostly when contesting midrange and 3-point jump shots. So...when defending a stretchier big.

Relentless would generally be considered to be mandatory for all bigs and all slashers.

I would go with Relentless. But I can buy an argument for Def Stopper if one wants to maximize defense against opposing bigs' jump shots. And could be especially helpful for McHale, due to really bad close-out speed/ability. He maybe cannot get into range for more than a light contest, at times, but maybe that is within range of Def Stopper activating, to at least remove the some shooting buffs.

Once again I'm learning something in this thread! I thought Defensive Stopper affected more badges than you're saying. That said, if you're playing McHale at the 4 then Defensive Stopper is still useful because a lot of people don't play two true bigs. Then you can negate your opponents' shooting badges. If what harryl is saying is correct, and I suspect that it probably is, then it's a much closer call than I initially thought.

Yeah he's right, outside scoring and playmaking badges only. It also only works against your defensive matchup, won't work on switches.

Very interesting. I know it's been discussed that Defensive Stopper also might not apply if you're playing a guy way out of position. For example, if I put Ben Wallace on Oscar Robertson, his HOF Defensive Stopper might not activate because he's matched up against a player that's more than one position from his natural position (Wallace's would only work against PFs and Cs). Anyone know if that's a fact?

McHale has a post hook, and everyone you face has a Gasol or some other new OP big. Go with Defensive Stopper.

Yes that's true, it works one position down and one up for SGs, SFs & PFs. On Cs one down, PGs one up.

i.e. On a SG it'll work against PGs and SFs

I know this is getting complicated, but I have a few follow-up questions: You said it also only works against an individual player's match-up and not on switches. So does that mean that even if my Gold Defensive Stopper SG gets switched onto a PG or just picks up the PG coming down the court in transition, his Defensive Stopper won't activate because it's not the man he's assigned to?

And if an opponent is playing a player out of position, like Porzingis (a PF) at PG, and I have a Gold Defensive Stopper PG who I assigne to guard him, will the badge activate because Porzingis is considered the PG in that lineup, or will it not activate because Porzingis's card lists him as a PF?

Man I wish 2K was more transparent about this stuff, especially since it matters a lot when deciding what badges to put on guys and how to match them up defensively.
