Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread

Now for the Heat. Starting lineup:

    PG – Mario Chalmers
    SG – Dwyane Wade
    SF – Shawn Marion
    PF – Michael Beasley
    C – Jamaal Magloire

I had no issues with this set defualt lineup. I would rather have Mario Chalmers start over Chris Quinn... easily. And while I like Udonis Haslem’s hustle and scrappiness, I cannot give him the starting nod over the promising rook Michael Beasley. Now for the plays:

SG Top Arc (Flex 4 set)
This is a play designed for the Heat’s do-it-all guard, DWade. Chalmers has the ball on the right side of the court behind the arc while DWade stands near the right baseline, Beasley stands at right elbow and Magloire stands on the left elbow. Beasley and Magloire converge near the free throw line area to set a double screen for DWade. Then DWade moves through the Beasley-Magloire double screen to the left side of court behind the arc. Chalmers passes the ball to DWade, then moves to the right corner. Beasley goes over to set another screen for DWade on the left elbow then DWade drives around this screen to the basket. Now in this play DWade has the option to take a pull-up midrange jumper, go all the way to the basket, put up a runner/floater, kick the ball out to Marion spotting up at left corner or to Beasley standing on the left elbow. Plus there is an early catch-and-shoot opportunity for DWade after going through the double screen and setting his feet on the left side of the court behind the arc.

SG Wing Iso (1-4 High set)
The layout of this Isolation play is explained in the Hawks playbook. This play is, of course, ran for DWade (Heat SG) to take his man one-on-one.

PF Pick & Post (1-4 High set)
This is a Post play basically designed for the beastly Beasley. Chalmers has the ball at the top of the key, then moves to the left wing as Beasley comes over to set a screen. After setting the screen Beasley goes over to the left block to set up in the post. Next, Chalmers gets Beasley the ball in the post. But that’s not all, as there is a cool alternative options within this play. Pay close attention to DWade standing in the left corner during the beginning of the play. As Chalmers move toward the left wing, DWade moves along the baseline then curls to top of arc near the area where Billups had initially been standing. The backdoor layup is there for DWade before going past the basket if the defense is sleeping and Chalmers can make that timely yet risky pass. There is also a chance to get the ball to DWads as he comes off the screen set by Magloire on the right block while heading toward the right wing.

    PF Pop Clear (Box set)
This is a cool play which has options for four different players to take a shot at some point. Chalmers has the ball at the top of key. DWade stands near the left baseline, Marino stands near the right baseline, Beasley stands near the left elbow and Magloire stands near the right elbow. Marion moves to the right corner. Beasley sets a down screen for DWade near the left block then DWade moves around screen to left side of elbow above the free throw line. Chalmers passes ball to DWade at that spot, then moves along the arc to the opposite (right) wing. Magloire goes over to set a screen for DWade at the free throw line area, then DWade dribbles around the screen to get to the right elbow. Meanwhile, Beasley moves over to the left elbow while Chalmers moves along the arc to the left wing and Magloire cuts to the basket. Beasley receives pass from DWade, then passes ball to Chalmers on the left wing behind the arc. Next, DWade moves to the top of the key, then moves to left wing to set screen for Chalmers. Then Chalmers dribbles around screen and goes along the arc to get to the top of key.

Now the play is primarily designed for Beasley to be open to take a jumper on the left elbow on the catch. However, I would think the best option to take while running this play is getting the ball to Magloire right when he’s diving to the basket. DWade also has an opportunity to either take a pull-up jumper from the free throw line on the catch or quickly drive to the basket before he passes the ball to Beasley. And Chalmers could look to create his own shot late in the sequence after going around the screen set by DWade.

    PG-PF Pick & Roll (Flex 2 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Hawks playbook. Chalmers (Heat PG) and Beasley (PF) are the main ones involved in the P&R sequence while DWade and Marion are spotting up on the wings.

    SG Stagger (Motion 5 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Pistons playbook. DWade (Heat SG), Chalmers (PG), Marion (SF) and Beasley (PF) are the players who are involved in running this play.

PF Post Option (Flex 3 set)
The layout of this Post play has been explained in the Mavericks playbook. Beasley (Heat PF) and Marion (SF) are the main players involved.

Wing Pick & Roll (Baseline 1 set)
The layout of this P&R play has been explained in the Bulls playbook. DWade (Heat SG) and Beasley (PF) are the main players involved.

to upload playbooks you do it through a roster file. you go to the playbooks from i believe the features section on the main menu and you select which plays you wanna run with that team when you are done the game autosaves the roster file. so whenever you play with a certain teams those plays you pick in the playbook section automatically show up each game. so if you made L1 sg wing iso for the heat. everytime you play with the heat L1 will be sg wing iso

I know you can have the play art displayed on the floor during the games, but I prefer not to because it kinda looks unrealistic and elementary. My problem is if your point guard isn't at the EXACT spot on the floor, the play will not start. Isn't kind of hard to memorize the EXACT position you have to go to just to get the play started in the first place? Because I know that when I have play art displayed, the play will not start until Rose is positioned right on the circle. Isn't that hard to tell without play art on?

That's probably my main concern. I'm pretty much a rookie when it comes to running plays. I am trying to get into them though. Right now I'm pretty much doing pick and roll and simple plays. Any other advice on running plays would be appreciated.

Yeah, the PG has to be standing in the exact correct spot in order to initiate the play. But from that point I think the game is far more lenient as far as the position of players and timing during a play sequence in comparison to how it was in 2K8. Some plays like "PF Pop Clear" was extremely difficult to run during a game online or offline in 2K8 because of how strict the positioning and timing had to be, but I don't have issue in running this play during a game in 2K9.

It helps to call the play while the PG is bringing the ball up the floor (preferably before crossing the halfcourt line) so to give the other teammates time to be at their right position once he makes it to where he has to be behind the arc.

Anyway, I thnk it's okay to have the play diagrams showing until you get to the point where you'll begin to remember where players have to be and what pass have to be made without the visual aid.

This play is designed to get Tay an open look at the top of the key but also has a good early alternative option and late alternative option. Billups initially has the ball at the top of the key while Rip stands in the left corner, Tay stands on the right corner, Sheed stands on the left elbow and Dice stands on the right elbow. Tay moves along the arc up to the right wing area, then cuts toward the basket to get to the right block area once he passes a screen set at the elbow by Dice. Sheed goes around a second screen set by Dice on the left side of the free throw line area to get to the right block, while Billups dribbles to the right side of the court along the arc. Then Rip and Dice both move over to the right block area to set a double screen there. Tay goes around the Rip-Dice double screen and moves to the top of the key and receives a pass from Billups at this spot. Here, Tay has the option of shooting a 3 off the catch if Billups makes the pass. The late alternative option in this play is that Sheed is posting up on the right block, so if Tay doesn’t have an open look at the top of the key, Billups can look to dump it down in the post to him instead. And as for the early alternative option… rewind back to the sequence where Tay makes toward the basket area on the right block past Dice’s screen on the right elbow? Well, what could happen in a different scenario is that Billups can thread the needle and look to pass it directly to Tay as he heads toward the basket. This can work out if Tay makes a precise cut to the hoop without getting bumped off track by defenders, which can be tough to manage at times. But even if Tay is not bumped off track while on the move, be warned that the quality of the pass coming from Billups that it would take to get to him is very risky to make, as it can get easily deflected resulting in a likely turnover. So don’t rely on completing this alternative option on a regular basis.

I just wanted to add that another option for this play is taking control of the SF. On your initial cut to the basket, if you get a good screen by the PF, you can then flare out to the corner and get the pass for an open 3.

Heh, after taking a glance at the Knicks playbook, it seems you’re out of luck. That's because I don’t see either of those plays listed. Hopefully I can find a few plays in their book that are similar the two you mentioned.

I think out of all the books, the Pistons have one of the best. A lot of plays in their book have multiple shot options for different players. I've been using it for my Nuggets and highly recommend it.
