Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread

Now for the Cavaliers. Starting lineup:

    PG – Maurice Williams
    SG – Wally Szczerbiak
    SF – LeBron James
    PF – Ben Wallace
    C – Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Yeah, Cavs users… I know that Wally Szczerbiak isn’t what one would call a desirable starting SG. But it’s the lesser of two evils, if that makes any sense. I mean, do you really want to start Sasha Pavlovic over him? Didn’t think so. Nor would I approve of starting such a dimunitive backcourt of Mo Willians and Daniel Gibson if Boobie were to get the nod over Wally. So… here we are. On to the plays:

SF Iso Wing (Flex 1 set) / SF Create (Triangle 6 set)
When playing with the Cavaliers it is a must to have Isolation plays to call for King James, and these are a couple of them that fits the bill. Both plays are designed to get the ball to James on the right wing behind the arc, with some distinguishing player movement on the part of Mo Williams. The former play takes a little longer to develop, as Mo basically runs along the baseline and circles around the arc back to the left wing area as James figures out how he wants to humiliate his defender one-on-one. In the latter play Mo will dart toward the basket around a screen set by Big Z at the top of the circle after giving the ball up to James. So a possible give & go sequence can be worked right here as a cool alternative option if Z successfully picks off Mo’s man with the screen and the passing lane from Bron to a cutting Mo is there.

    SF Popout (Box set)
This is another play for LeBron, but this one is interesting because this also has an alternative option for Big Z. Mo has the ball at the top of the key while Bron stands at the right baseline area. Big Z stands near the right elbow and Big Ben stands near the left elbow. Ben goes over to set a screen for Mo near the top of the key. Meanwhile, Z goes over to set down screen for Bron. Mo dribbles around Ben’s screen to get to the left wing behind the arc. Next, Bron comes off Z’s screen to get to the right wing. Mo passes the ball to Ben, who then relays the ball to Bron. Bron then has the option to shoot on the catch, take his man one-on-one, or he can feed the ball to Z for a post up opportunity since Z is already standing on the right block.

    Baseline Curl (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Clippers playbook. Mo (Cavaliers PG), Bron (SF) and Wally (SG) are the key players in this play.

    PG-SF Pick & Roll (Baseline 1 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the 76ers playbook. Mo (Cavaliers PG), Bron (SF) and Wally (SG) are the key players in this play.

Screen Drive & Dish (Flex 4 set)
This is a cool play to run for Mo and Bron which has alternative options included within. Mo has the ball at the top of the key, then Z goes over near the arc to set screen for him. Mo then dribbles around the left side of screen past the elbow area and kicks the ball out to Bron spotting up in the left corner. Next, Mo goes around a second screen set by Z near the left block and moves to the left side of the court behind the arc. Bron passes the ball to Z on the block then Z relays the ball to Mo outside.

Now the first and probably best alternative option is when Mo drives around the first screen set by Z. At this moment, Mo can opt to accelerate and drive all the way to the basket instead of kicking the ball back out to Bron. Another option is when Bron receives the ball from Mo on the kickout pass. The best idea in this scenario would likely be for Bron to shoot his streaky 3-ball on the catch instead of waiting on Mo to move back out to the perimeter.

    Ol Reliable (Triangle 3 set)
This is a Post play for Big Z which includes an alternative option to work a possible give & go sequence with Mo. In the beginning Mo has the ball on the left wing behind the arc. Wally stands in the left corner, Bron stands in the right corner, Ben stands near the right elbow and Z stands on the left block. Mo takes a couple steps to his left then passes the ball to Z calling for the ball on the low left block. As Z holds the ball in the post, Mo would proceed to cut into the lane then turn toward the right corner around a screen set by Ben on the right block, and Bron moves to the top of the circle. Now Z can choose to hold on to the ball to allow all the player movement take place first, then work his man in the post. Or Z can choose to deliver a well-timed pass to Mo cutting to the basket area. Be warned, however, that this pass is difficult to complete and would likely result in a deflection/turnover more often than not.

PG Double Lane (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Hawks playbook. Mo (Cavaliers PG) and Bron (SF) are the main players who get the touches in this play.

C Quick Post (Triangle 5 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Clippers playbook. Mo (Cavaliers PG) and Big Z (C) are the key players in this play.

Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread

Now for the Nuggets. Starting lineup:

      PG – Anthony Carter
      SG – Allen Iverson
      SF – Carmelo Anthony
      PF – Kenyon Martin
      C – Nene

Man…. it’s sooo tempting to start AI at the PG spot along with moving J.R. Smith at SG. It really is. But I just couldn’t pull the trigger on making these decisions. I think in the end it’s best that J.R. fits the role of being that primary scoring spark coming off the bench. And it’s a load of plays inside the Nuggets playbook featuring the 2-guard in comparison to featuring the point guard. So AI stays at the 2 spot while J.R. comes off the bench. On to the plays:

      SF Post High (Box set)
Now I have to include a play designed to get Melo the ball down low, who is the Nuggets best post player. Carter has the ball at top of key. Nene stands on the right elbow and Melo stands near the right baseline. Nene goes over to set a screen for Carter near the top of the key then Carter dribbles toward the right wing behind the arc. Melo moves to the right elbow and receives ball from Carter in the high post area. K-Mart then moves from the left elbow to an area near the right baseline, Nene moves to an area near the left baseline, and AI moves to lthe eft wing behind the arc to clear some space for Melo to go to work on his man.

      Free Wings (Motion 1 set)
This is a quick-hitting play designed to get either AI or Melo a jumper after coming off their respective screens. Carter has the ball at the top of the key. AI stands in the left corner, Melo stands in the right corner, K-Mart stands near the left elbow and Nene stands near the right elbow. Both K-Mart and Nene move down to the low block areas to set down screens on their respective sides of the court. AI fakes a cut to the basket then turns and curls around K-Mart’s screen to get to the left elbow. Meanwhile, Melo pops out and heads to the right wing behind the arc. At this point Carter has the option of passing the ball to either AI for a mid-range jumper from the left elbow or pass to Melo for a 3 from the right wing.

SF Screen Iso (Triangle 4 set) / SF Create (Triangle 6 set)
These are two Isolation plays that can be called for Nuggets younger star in Melo. The former play “SF Screen Iso” gets the ball to him on the left wing and allows him to come off a screen set by Nene in order to rub off his defender at the top of the circle. From this point Melo can choose to shoot a pull-up mid-range jumper off the dribble or drive all the way to the basket. The latter play “SF Create” gets Melo the ball on the right wing, and a more detailed explanation of this play can be found in the Cavaliers playbook.

SG Wing Iso (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Hawks playbook. AI (Nuggets SG) and K-Mart (PF) are the key players in this play.

      PF Decision (Baseline 1 set)
It’s time to throw a bone at one of the Nuggets big men. On this play K-Mart (Nuggets PF) will get the ball in the post. The Jazz playbook has a detailed explanation of the play. Carter (PG) is also a key player in this play.

SG Pick & Pop (Flex 2 set)
This play is pretty much a P&P play involving Melo and AI. Carter has the ball on the right side of the court behind the arc. AI stands near the right baseline, Melo stands on the right wing behind the arc, K-Mart stands on the left elbow and Nene stands near the right baseline. Carter passes the ball to Melo then moves over to the left wing behind the arc. After receiving the pass, Melo moves toward the screen set by AI near the right baseline. And from this point this play can be ran like a typical P&P sequence. Melo also has the option of driving hard along the baseline around AI’s screen to the basket.

      Quick Hit SG (Box set)
This is a nice play for Melo that allow him multiple options to make a play either for himself or for Nene. Carter has the ball at the top of the key. AI stands near the left baseline, Melo stands near the right baseline, K-Mart stands near the left elbow and Nene stands near the right elbow. Carter dribbles along the arc to the right wing area while Nene and Melo both go over to set a double screen inside the paint area for AI, who moves through the double screen all the way to the top of the key behind the arc. After AI makes his move up top, Nene moves to the left block and K-Mart heads to the right block after going around another screen set by Melo near the left elbow. Melo will then move back out to the left wing area behind the arc. Carter passes the ball to AI and then AI immediately swings it to Melo. As Melo receives the ball, Nene will move up to near the elbow area to set a screen for him. From this point the play can be ran like a typical P&R sequence between these players. Also don’t forget that Melo has the option to drive all the way to the basket as well if there is an open path.

SG Wing Screen (Baseline 1 set)
This is basically a Screen that can be like Pick & Pop play. Carter has the ball at the top of the key. AI stands on the left wing behind the arc, Melo stands on the right wing behind the arc, K-Mart stands near the left baseline and Nene stands near the right baseline. Carter moves to the left side of the court and passes the ball to AI, who waits for a screen set by K-Mart on the left wing. After coming off the screen set by K-Mart as an attempt to rub off his defender, AI can opt to take a pull-up mid-range jumper off the dribble, drive hard along the baseline to the basket or kick the ball back out to K-Mart for a jumper from the left wing. Considering that it’s AI who takes the shot in the first two cases, these would no doubt be better options to do than the third.

Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread

Now for the Magic. Starting lineup:

          PG – Jameer Nelson
          SG – Keith Bogans
          SF – Hedo Turkoglu
          PF – Rashard Lewis
          C – Dwight Howard

I had no issues staying with this starting lineup. I contemplated starting Mickael Pietrus at SG but only briefly, and I never became serious about making this move. Anyway, on to the plays:

Screen Low (Baseline 2 set) / Pick Then Post (Box set)
These are Post plays for Superman to go to work. I think it’s best to alternate calling instead of taking up two slots, but I can the argument for the contrary. At any rate, the explanation for the former play can be found in the Knicks playbook while the latter play can be found in the Clippers playbook.

          SF Triple Screen (Box set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Bulls playbook. This play mainly features Hedo Turkoglu (Magic SF), who ends up taking the shot.

Pick & Pop Mid (Flex 3 set)
This nice play features a 2-man game between Turkoglu and Lewis that can be difficult to stop if executed well. Nelson has the ball on the left side of the court behind the arc. Bogans stands in the left corner, Turkoglu stands on the right wing near the arc, Lewis stands near the right baseline and Howard stands at the top of the circle. Nelson dribbles to the top of the key then passes the ball to Turkoglu, who dribbles toward Lewis setting a screen near the right baseline. Meanwhile, Howard moves to the left block area to clear some space for them. At this point the play is ran like a typical P&P sequence. Turkoglu can opt to either take the pull-up mid-range jumper along the short corner after coming off the screen, drive hard along the baseline around the screen to the basket, or he can pass the ball to Lewis for Rashard to take a mid-range jumper from the wing off the catch.

Screen Drive & Dish (Flex 4 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Cavaliers playbook. Jameer Nelson (Magic PG), Hedo Turkoglo (SF), and Howard (C) are the key players in this play.

          PG-C Pick & Roll (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Jazz playbook. Nelson (Magic PG) and Howard (C) are the main players involved.

          Free SF (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Pistons playbook. Turkoglu (Magic SF) and Nelson (PG) are the key players in this play.

C Low Block (Triangle 3 set) / C Quick Post (Triangle 5 set)
These are two more Post plays to call on for Superman. Again, I would suggest alternating use of these plays instead of taking up two different slots. The layout of both plays has been explained in the Clippers playbook.

          PG Combo (Motion 4 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Pistons playbook. Nelson (Magic PG), Rashard Lewis (PF) and Turkoglu (SF) are the main players featured in running this play.

I didn’t include any of these plays while coming up with my Magic playbook list, so I decided to throw in some brief comment on these particular plays now.

“Bullish Backcourt” is decent play for the Magic as Bogans does have a fairly decent mid-range jumper. But I don’t think I would personally call on this play a whole lot whenever using this particular team. I’d rather call on plays that would have Turkoglu coming off screens taking pull-up mid-range jumpers off the dribble instead like in “SF Triple Screen.”

I think “PF Baseline 3” is a great zone killer -- especially against 1-3-1 and 3-2. But I don't feel that it's all that effective majority of the time against Man defense. With that said, Rashard Lewis has no trouble shooting over most players so this play should work fairly well for the Magic.

“Zero In” is a great choice. This should be a nice one to run for the Magic.

I don't think much will change with my Nuggets playbook list if Jamaal Tinsley does officially joins that team. Maybe add in "PG-C High Screen & Roll" play involving he and Nene, or "PG Choice" and that's about it. Running “SF Pitch” with Tinsley could be interesting too.

Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread

Now for the Hornets. Starting lineup:

                    PG – Chris Paul
                    SG – James Posey
                    SF – Peja Stojakovic
                    PF – David West
                    C – Tyson Chandler

Starting James Posey over Morris Peterson could be a shock to many, but after looking at their ratings in NB 2K9 it’s not so difficult to see why this decision was made. To give a simple reason, Posey brings much better perimeter defense to the starting unit without sacrificing any significant drop-off in 3-pt shooting. On to the plays:

PG Clearout (1-4 High set) / PG Wing Iso (Flex 3 set)
These are two Isolation plays designed to take advantage of the outstanding one-on-one skills of CP. The layout of these plays has been explained in the Clippers playbook. I think it’s a good idea to switch up calling these plays instead of using up two different slots for them.

                    PG-C Pick & Roll 3 (Flex 4 set) / PG-C High Screen Roll (Flex 3 set)
Like the titles say, they are Pick & Roll plays involving CP and Chandler. Like the pair above, I think it’s better to alternate calling these plays during the course of a game instead of using two slots.

                    Razor Elbows (Flex 1 set)
This play is designed to get a shot for Peja or West. CP has the ball on the right side of the court behind the arc then Chaldler moves over to the top of the key to set a screen for him. CP dribbles around the screen over to the left wing. After setting the screen for CP at the top of the key, Chandler goes over the right elbow area to set a screen for Peja who’s initially standing on the right wing. Next, Peja fakes going backdoor, then turns back to go around Chandler’s screen at the elbow. At this point CP has the option of passing the ball to Peja coming off the elbow screen, or pass to West, who is posting up on the left block. This is a nice play to call on because West has an array of moves in the post and Peja has a lethal mid-range J off the dribble. It would be a good idea to constantly switch up who gets the ball on this play as to keep the defense guessing.

PF Screen Post (Baseline 1 set)
This play is designed to get West the ball in the block mid-post area that has an interesting alternative option. CP has the ball on the right side of the court behind the arc then moves left. At this moment CP goes to set a screen for Posey standing on the left wing. Next, Posey moves to the left corner. After setting the screen for Posey, West goes back to the left block to post up and Nelson delivers the ball to him. Now what’s the alternative option, you ask. Well, the alternative option is that screen on the left wing set for Posey early in the play. Instead of waiting for West to go into the post after setting the screen, it’s possible for CP to just pass the ball directly to Posey for the catch-and-shoot jumper from the left corner if Posey happens to rub his defender off on the West screen successfully. Now there is a cool two-for-one.

                    PF Decision (Baseline 1 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Jazz playbook. West (Hornets PF) and CP (PG) are the key players in this play.

                    Free SF (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Pistons playbook. Peja (Hornets SF) and CP (PG) are the key players in this play.

                    PG-PF High Screen Roll (Baseline 2 set) / PG-PF Pick & Roll 2 (Motion 5 set)
Not long after mentioning a couple P&R plays involving CP and Chandler are a couple P&R plays featuring CP and West. Once again, it’s good to alternate calling these plays as opposed to using up two slots.

                    Quick Hit SG (Box set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Nuggets playbook. Peja (Hornets SF), Posey (SG) and CP (PG) are the key players in this play.

Thank you sir. I'll print these out and get the execution down. I really need to get Hedo more involved. Nelson, Howard and Lewis are my big scorers, but want to get Hedo more looks.

I was playing with the Hornets the other night and had Peja go cold on me. I agree with starting Posey too.

                        PG – Russell Westbrook
                        SG – Kevin Durant
                        SF – Jeff Green
                        PF – Chris Wilcox
                        C – Nick Collison

Starting Nick Collison over Johan Petro was an easy decision for me to make. Collison is simply better than Petro in many categories important for a big man. On to the plays:

SG Wing Iso (1-4 High set)
Whenever playing with the Thunder it should undoubtedly be a requirement to reserve an Isolation play for Kevin Durant. The layout of this play has been explained in the Hawks playbook.

                        SG Backdoor (Baseline 1 set)
This play presents an alleyoop opportunity for Durant in case the defenders near the baseline are caught sleeping. The layout of this play has been explained in the Jazz playbook. Wilcox (Thunder PF) and Westbrook (PG) are also involved in this play.

                        PG-PF Pick & Roll 2 (Motion 5 set)
The layout of this P&R play has been explained in the 76ers playbook. Westbrook (Thunder PG), Wilcox (PF) and Durant (SG) are the key players in this play.

Wing Pick & Roll (Baseline 1 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Bulls playbook. Durant (Thunder SG) and Wilcox (PF) are the key players in this play.

Guard Pick & Fade (Flex 3 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Hawks playbook. Westbrook (Thunder PG) and Durant (SG) are the key players in this play.

SG Triangle Post (Triangle 6 set)
This interesting play is designed to get Durant the ball in the mid-post area, who is the Thunder’s highest rated post player believe it or not. Westbrook has the ball on the right side of the court behind the arc. Durant stands on the left wing behind the arc, Green stands on the right wing behind the arc, Wilcox stands near the left baseline and Collison stands on the right block. Green approaches Westbrook and receives the ball on the right wing while Durant moves to the top of the key. After giving up the ball, Westbrook moves to the right corner. Next, Collison moves to the top of the circle to set a screen for Durant, who goes around the screen to get to the right block. Green passes the ball to Westbrook, who then feeds the ball to Durant in the post. As Durant has the ball in the mid-post area Westbrook moves along the baseline all the way over to the opposite (left) corner and Wilcox goes around another screen set by Collison standing on the left block to get near the arc. Now Durant has the right side of the court to work his man and showcase his repertoire of post moves. Or he could opt to face up against his defender and take him off the dribble.

PF Pick & Post (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Heat playbook. Wilcox (Thunder PF), Westbrook (PG) and Durant (SG) are the key players in this play.

SF Backdoor Cut (Flex 1 set)
The layout of this play has been explained in the Bulls playbook. Jeff Green (Thunder SF), Durant (SG) and Westbrook (PG) are the key players in this play.

                        Next: Nets

Not to be picky or contradict but.... I totally understand your thoughts for pulling Petro out of the starting rotation but, what is your reason for not putting Collison at PF and Wilcox at C. Isn't Collison a better shooter? Isn't Wilcox a better scrapper.
I believe these guys are almost "neck -N-neck" for what they do best but I LOVE to hear your thoughts.

Also....if you were to switch Collison & Wilcox would the playbook change or remain the same seeing as to how they have simular games?
