Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread
Now for the Spurs. Starting lineup:
PG – Tony Parker
SG – Manu Ginobili
SF – Bruce Bowen
PF – Tim Duncan
C – Kurt Thomas
Manu Ginobili starts for me, period. He’s waaaay too good a player to not be starting. I also decided to start Kurt Thomas over Fabricio Oberto because Kurt is a better defensive rebounder, better post defender, and is rated higher in awareness on both ends of the court. Now for the plays:
PF Decision (Baseline 1 set) / PF Post Option (Flex 3 set)
I paired these Post plays because I didn’t want to overload slots with Post plays even though these plays are designed for the Spurs elite post player Duncan. It’s best to alternate between choosing both plays at different times of a game.
Anyway, an explanation on the “PF Decision” play can be found in the Jazz playbook, while an explanation on the “PF Post Option” play can be found in the Mavericks playbook. The former play has Parker (Spurs PG) on the move, while the latter play has Bowen (SF) on the move instead.
PF Low Post (Triangle 4 set) / PF Low Post 2 (Flex 4 set)
Same situation as previous Post plays. I didn’t want to overload too many slots with them. It’s best to alternate between choosing both plays at different times of a game. Anyway, the latter play out of the Flex 4 set is the same way as explained in the Jazz playbook, except Ginobili (Spurs SG) will be delivering the low post feed to Duncan in this case.
Meanwhile, the former play out of the Triangle 4 set has Parker with the ball at the top of the key. Ginobili stands near the right baseline, Bowen stands on the left wing behind the arc, Duncan stands near the left baseline and Thomas stands on the right elbow. Parker passes the ball to Bowen then Thomas moves over to set screen for him at the top of the circle. Next, Parker drifts around Thomas’ screen over to the right wing behind the arc. Duncan sets up on the left block and Bowen makes the entry pass. Now at this point Duncan can dictate how this play can be run. Duncan can look to score from the post right away, or he can choose to kick the ball back out immediately to Bowen and try to re-post. As Bowen gets the ball back he can look to either dump the ball back down to Duncan in the post, or even hoist a 3 shot if Duncan is under a fierce double team that won’t let up. A nice 2-man game can be formed with this play if it’s run correctly. Seconds later, Thomas moves back over to the right elbow, and Parker goes back over to the left side of the court behind the arc so he can be an kickout option for Duncan along with Bowen.
Wing Pick & Roll (Baseline 1 set)
The layout of this play is the same as what has been explained in the Bulls playbook. Ginobili (Spurs SG) and Duncan (PF) are the main players involved running this P&R play.
PG Dive & Curl (Box set)
The layout of this play is the same as what has been explained in the Jazz playbook. Parker (Spurs PG), Thomas (C), Ginobili (SG) and Duncan (PF) are all the players involved in running this play.
PG Clearout (1-4 High set)
The layout of this play is the same as what has been explained in the Clippers playbook. Parker (Spurs PG) is the main guy featured in this Isolation play.
SG-PF Two Man (Box set)
The layout of this play is the same as what has been explained in the Bulls playbook. Ginobili (Spurs SG), Duncan (PF) and Parker (PG) are the key players involved in running this play.
PF Pop Clear (Box set)
The layout of this play is the same as what has been explained in the Heat playbook. Duncan (Spurs PF), Ginobili (SG), Parker (PG) and Thomas (C) are all the players involved in running this play.
Complement SG 3 (Triangle 3 set)
This cool but long-developing play is designed to get Ginobili an open look on the left wing with an alternative option in the post for Duncan. Parker has the ball standing on the left side of the court behind the arc. Ginobili stands in the left corner, Bowen stands in the right corner, Duncan stands on the right elbow and Thomas stands near the left block. Duncan and Thomas both move to set staggered screens – one near the right baseline and one near the right block -- for Ginobili and for Bowen to make their moves. Ginobili moves along the baseline around the staggered screens then turns up to the right side of the court behind the arc while Bowen moves to the area near the left block. Thomas goes over to the top of the circle to set another screen while Duncan moves to the right block area. Bowen moves toward the elbow then makes a cut to the left wing behind the arc. Next, as Parker passes the ball to Ginobili, Duncan moves toward the right elbow then makes a cut to the right wing behind the arc. Ginobili relays the ball to Duncan then moves around a screen set at the top of the circle by Thomas to get to the left block area. Now as Duncan holds the ball, Parker makes move similar to Ginobili going around the Thomas screen except he’s heading to the right block area instead. Bowen goes down toward the left block area to set a screen for Ginobili, who pops out on the left wing behind the arc. At this moment, Duncan passes the ball to Thomas, who then relays it to Ginobili as he gets to the left wing for a catch-and-shoot 3. After passing the ball, Duncan goes over to set a screen near the right elbow for Parker, who runs around the screen to get to right wing behind the arc. If Ginobili doesn’t take the shot right away, he can wait for Bowen to go over to the right block area to set a screen for Duncan, who moves across the lane around the screen and goes to post up on the left block. Now at this point Ginobili can feed the ball to Duncan in the post.

Re: Official NBA 2K9 Playbook Thread
Now for the Raptors. Starting lineup:
PG – Jose Calderon
SG – Anthony Parker
SF – Jamario Moon
PF – Chris Bosh
C – Jermaine O’Neal
The only tough decision for me was starting Jamario Moon over sharpshooter Jason Kapono. While I can certainly see the argument for Kapono, I thought it would be better to have more of an athletic, defensive-oriented player starting at this position for this team since the bigs and guards will take the majority of shots in the Raptors half-court offense. In this case, Kapono can comes off the bench as a member of the second unit that emphasizes pushing the ball up and down the court so he get more opportunities to hoist open 3s in transition, which is his specialty. Now for the plays:
PF Curl & Create (Motion 5 set) / PF Poison (Flex 4 set)
These are two Isolation plays designed to get the ball to Chris Bosh at or near the center of the court. The former play “PF Curl & Create” gets the ball to him at the free throw line area while the latter play “PF Poison” gets the ball to him on the top of the circle. The former play is explained in detail in the 76ers playbook and the latter play is explained in the Mavericks playbook. I would recommend alternating between both of these plays instead of using two slots for them since they’re similar to one another.
PG Choice (Flex 2 set)
The layout of this play is explained in the Pistons playbook. Jose Calderon (Raptors PG), Anthony Parker and Chris Bosh (PF) are the key players involved in running this play.
PF Decision (Baseline 1 set) / PF Low Post 2 (Flex 4 set)
These are two Post plays for Bosh that I would suggest switch up with to keep the defense off guard. Both of these plays are further explained in the Jazz playbook.
C Low Block (Triangle 3 set)
Gotta throw a bone to the Raptors other big man in Jermaine O’Neal, who’s certainly no slouch. This is a Post play for O’Neal designed to get him the ball on the left block. Take note that there’s also a possibility for an open look for Calderon to take a 3-pointer from the left wing as he comes off the screen set by Parker prior to O’Neal calling for the ball.
SG-PF Two Man (Box set)
The layout of this play is explained in the Bulls playbook. Parker (Raptors SG), Bosh (PF), and Calderon (PG) are the key players involved in this play.
PG-PF High Screen Roll (Baseline 2 set)
The layout of this play is explained in the Pistons playbook. Calderon (Raptors PG), Bosh (PF) and Parker (SG) are the key players involved in this play.
PG-C Pick & Roll 2 (Box set)
The layout of this play is explained in the Clippers playbook. Calderon (Raptors PG) and O’Neal (C) are the key players involved in this play.
PG Combo (Motion 4 set)
The layout of this play is explained in the Pistons playbook. Calderon (Raptors PG), Bosh and Moon (SF) are the key players involved in this play.
