Re: Dennis Rodman: Blackballed From the HOF?
Looking at numbers to judge defense is a big mistake. Rodman was able to masterfully defend small forwards, power forwards, and even some centers. Since he was 6'7, 227 lbs he was able to run with the guards and bang with the bigs. Sure he couldnt shoot a lick but he never took bad shots. His defense was insistent, pecking, annoying, disruptive, and late hitting. These tactics worked masterfully against mental midgits like Karl Malone. He was a critical part of all 5 championship teams he was on.
im not saying numbers say everything. You have to watch the game to see how good of a defender someone is, but a dominant HOF caliber defensive player would pile up some steals and blocks numbers. We are talking about putting someone in the HOF as a defensive specialist
Rodman's rebounding/defense were big keys to those Pistons and Bulls championships, but he was more of a "role player" on those teams than a superstar on those teams imo
He was more productive than guys like Gervin, Hawkins, and Issel.
but I do know that Gervin was one of the best scorers of all time, and he was one of the ABA/NBA pioneersLast edited by ZB9; 05-12-2009, 05:28 PM.Comment

That is all true, but when talking about putting someone into the HOF as a rebounding/defensive specialist, they would need some serious numbers to go with it

lol did you watch any of those guys? neither did I

I'm not a stats guy at all but Rodman averaged at least 15 rebounds for 7 straight seasons. I dont need to the stats to tell me how good of a rebounder he was but take that for what its worth. A dominant defender doesnt neccesarily need great numbers, so that is a myth.
I saw Gervin, Issel, and Hawkins play and Gervin was one dimensional, lazy, selfish, and clutchless. Hawkins was one dimensional, and Issel was just a stat sheet filler who didn't produce in crunch time.Comment

Re: Dennis Rodman: Blackballed From the HOF?
I am saying he is the greatest role player of all time though. He excelled at what he was asked to do (ie. rebound and defend the other teams best scorer). Flashy point totals are very overrated my friend.

we just agree to disagree whether that equals HOFer when it comes to Rodman

I dont know about Connie Hawkins. As far as Issel, I think he was elected because of his college career also and not just his ABA career...although his pro career sure seemed quite impressive.Last edited by ZB9; 05-12-2009, 06:46 PM.Comment

very good points imo...I agree with all of that

I didnt see any of them play, so I dont know if you are right or not. I do love basketball history though, and researching basketball history, Gervin certainly seems like a legit HOF caliber player imo.

Not really. If a person's role on the team can be defined by one or two acts, he's a role player.Comment

Re: Dennis Rodman: Blackballed From the HOF?
Connie Hawkins, Walt Bellamy, Pete Maravich, Patrick Ewing, George Gervin, Charles Barkley, Elvin Hayes, Bob McAdoo, David Robinson, David Thompson, Robert Parish, Gail Goodrich, Alex English
All were either useless in the clutch, selfish, cream puffs, defenseless, and one dimensional.NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers
NBA: Dallas Mavericks
MLB: Texas Rangers
NHL: Dallas Stars
NCAA: Alabama Crimson Tide
University of North Texas '14

Re: Dennis Rodman: Blackballed From the HOF?
All were either soft, defenseless, one dimensional, or chokers. Most were just stat sheet fillers while Rodman acutally had a tangible effect on the outcome of the game.Comment
