Re: 11/1-11/7 Game Discussion Thread
Bad contracts turn into players and picks. When another team needs a salary to match they will add a third team with a bad contract. Happens all the time. Last year of contract or only two years left.
Also Conley is going to make less than the average salary of a starting PG for the next year or two. So basically he is market value. If he doesn't progress then he will be overpaid in 2 years. That is why it is deceptive to see 45 mil for 5 years.
Conley was going to get the mid level exception. That was his market value. They paid slightly over it to keep him in town and happy. Not that big of a stretch.Comment

I don't know, I mean I'm not a psychic, but even if he did get the MLE, then sure you can match it.
Like I said, they were bidding against themselves, but it's not the worst deal of the current season. It's just a bad deal, especially considering other players still not taken care of, and that the market would be terrible this Summer, in terms of other teams looking to spend.Comment

Some team is going to pay for a young PG. TJ Ford, Ray Felton, Beno Udrih....all got contracts at the mid level.I don't know, I mean I'm not a psychic, but even if he did get the MLE, then sure you can match it.

You are acting like the NBA has a market....it doesn't. It has 4 teams that may be under the cap and 26 teams that are going to give out the full mid level exception for a starting or even a backup PG.
Your logic of a market value doesn't make sense with the NBA. It is known now. The summer doesn't mean much except for sign and trade potential.Comment

Re: 11/1-11/7 Game Discussion Thread
So let him get the MLE or even a contract like he got now. At least let him become a RFA before you blow your load.
I'm not really following you on the other parts of the post. What part of my logic don't you get. And also how am I acting like the "NBA has a market"? I'm not even sure I get what you mean by that.Comment

Re: 11/1-11/7 Game Discussion Thread
He's a scoring PG. Small but powerful and athletic.
Doesn't really have a jumper, but he likes attacking the basket.
He'd be a perfect compliment off the bench for them if Baron got his damn act together as a starter.Comment

Re: 11/1-11/7 Game Discussion Thread
Don't you take into account that this team is borderline playoffs and signing Conley might help him become the leader of the team? He has been rumored to be traded or not resigned for the last year. This legitimizes his role as a PG on the team.So let him get the MLE or even a contract like he got now. At least let him become a RFA before you blow your load.

You are saying it is a bad contract because they didn't wait until the summer. You wanted teams to "bid" on him and then match the contract. We know what contract would be. 85% of the teams will be over the cap and no team will spend more than the mid level exception for him because even if they were under the cap they are not wasting that space on Conley.
So by any estimation he is going to get roughly 4 years with an option for roughly 40 million. Which is the same contract he got now. You are saying it is a bad contract because they didn't wait.....there is no logic in waiting unless you don't want to resign him.
I don't understand your logic of waiting or your emphasis on waiting for the summer because then he will be a restricted free agent.Comment

Re: 11/1-11/7 Game Discussion Thread
Right, I wanted them to wait for a team to pay him what he got now.
My thinking is, he definitely wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the deal he got.
If a team did sign him to a contract exceeding the MLE, then sure, match the deal.
The market this Summer, teams aren't going to spend at all. Memphis should have used that to their advantage and signed him for less money after the season ended, and they would have gotten a chance to see more of him. Conley is the perfect restricted free agent in the perfect time if you're Memphis GM.Comment

So they overpaid him by $750,000 a year plus or minus the increase in average player salary over the course of the contract compared to the max % contract raises.MID-LEVEL SALARY EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team to sign any free agent up to the average salary (see question number 25 for the definition of "average salary." Also note that for 2005-06 they used a defined figure of $5 million). This exception may be split and given to multiple players. It may be used for contracts of up to five years in length, and raises are limited to up to 8% of the salary in the first year of the contract. Signing a player to a multi-year contract does not affect a team's ability to use this exception every year. For example, a team can sign a player to a five-year contract using this exception and still use the exception the following year to sign another player. Also see question number 20 for more information on the availability and use of this exception.
If the player is a restricted free agent with one or two years of service and receives an offer sheet from a new team, the player's prior team may use the Mid-Level exception to match the offer sheet (see question number 37 for restricted free agency).
Here are the actual values of this exception for each season. Note that since this exception is based on the average player salary, the actual value of this exception is not determined until the start of the free agent signing period.
<table class="lefttable"><tbody><tr> <td>2005-06</td> <td>$5 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td>2006-07</td> <td>$5.215 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td>2007-08</td> <td>$5.356 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td>2008-09</td> <td>$5.585 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td>2009-10</td> <td>$5.854 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td>2010-11</td> <td>$5.765 million</td></tr></tbody></table>
Is it really that crazy of a contract? People (not just you Ex Carrabba) acted like the sky was falling. Dude is making just over the average contract in the NBA....Comment
