Every once in a while I like to remind that what's up.

    I can't stand:

"The Hero" - The guy who think he's Mr.Clutch when his team has game point. I have a buddy whose finger is always on the trigger when it's game point. Shot selection goes out the window.

I hate "The complainer" too. I hoop with a guy who stays getting hurt. Take your pick of ankle, shoulder, back, neck, whatever. He's the kind of guy who will say before the game "Don't count on me for much this game, my (insert body part listed above) is killing me". When he gets hurt he whines on the ground like

I'm guilty of being the guy who "floats" at times. Sometimes I need a little motivation out there. It might be someone calling BS fouls or someone running their mouth but things like that usually get my competitive juices flowing.

I feel like everyone should know their role in a pickup game. When people step outside their comfort level bad things are bound to happen.

Re: The worst pick up players.

^ at the Peter clip. I knew a guy that did the same thing. What was even better was that if he'd blow a layup or something, he'd blame it on the fact he was playing in jeans or that he didn't have the right shoes.

Man, just posting in this thread makes me want to go play but there's still a bit of snow on the ground around here. I don't even think I really played at all last year.

I've never been the best player, but this year I plan to play a ton and go extra hard. I'm still pretty young so hopefully I can improve and get a more consistent game. Shaking off that rust is gonna be a bitch though.

I've definitely come across those guys. You know who I come across more often though? The "Anti-Hero". Quite frequently I'll be running with a team of go-getters and we'll put together a really solid game, hitting on all cylinders. Then, mysteriously, when it's game point, every single one of my teammates becomes gun shy. They begin passing up open looks. They seem to play keepaway with the ball on offense until they turn it over, etc.

The interesting thing is that when I recognize this, I feel myself trying to go into "Hero" mode because I feel like the answer is to go get it because no one else wants to. Of course, in truth, it becomes five guys not playing their game. Four playing more passive than ever and one pushing too hard to make something happen.

the guy who, because we've lost track of the score, elevates his team score in a way that is inconceivably high, causing us to backtrack and recount every point.

I was playing some pick up ball yesterday with a group of friends and there was a guy there who I don't think anybody has mentioned yet...maybe somebody can come up with a name for him?

Anyway, this kid isn't that all that good. Plays no defense, doesn't pass the ball, and when he drives it's out of control. But, he's learned how to post up players and has a turn around that goes in 80% of the time. I was guarding him during one of the games, he tried to pump fake me on a three point shot but when I didn't bite, he tried to lean around me and threw up a shot that went WIDE right. Everybody started laughing at him. The game ended shortly after that.

We go to shoot for teams for the next game and when it's his turn to shoot he starts saying that he hurt his back and can't play anymore. He was walking around just fine and was running around just fine a few minutes before but out of nowhere, his back hurt.

Anybody else ran into a player like that?

                    This thread is great

I can't stand playing with people who lose count of the score every single game and it turns into a big argument for five minutes.

And his injury bothers him on every single miss, never when he actually makes a shot. Hit a 3, he's fine. Throw up an air ball, and then he has to start flexing his elbow and doing some stretches for the next 5 minutes.

Then again, you see this in the NBA too.

I'm usually a pretty good pickup, I suck at shooting so I just focus on defense and passing with an occassional open jumper a game. However lately i've been getting out of shape condition wise and after a game or 2 get really tired, so since the team I usually run with has a great offensive game I just stay back on defense.

Re: The worst pick up players.

The short guy that screams "BLOCK IT!" from the other side of the court and gets mad when you don't. I know I'm tall but I can't block every single shot...especially when I'm the only one back on defense in a 3-on-1 situation.

The ultimate driver/slasher guy. Gets the ball, drives to the same side of his dominant hand every time, and shoots some contested layup in traffic. Had a lefty who would get the ball, drive left literally everytime, hop step, and then try to shoot over everyone.

The guy with exceptional height but gets outrebounded by anyone.

The guy who gets mad at you if you allow an offensive rebound or inside bucket, even though you're guarding the sharpshooter on the perimeter.

The guy who pivots around forever, pump-faking, trying to get the defense to jump.

The white guy playing with nothing but black guys but if he starts doing good, he tries to be ghetto. (No racism intended)

The "I never score so when I do, I get overexcited" guy

The guy who's constantly talking under his breath.

The guy who sings while he plays (I do that but it's annoying when others do it to me lol)

The guy that puts his butt up on you if you're behind him trying to block it.

The guy that slaps his teammates' butts endlessly, disturbing the crap out of everyone on the court.

The one guy that takes his shirt off and starts playing very very tight D.

In a related note, I object to the little guys who take a look at anyone 6'3'' and over and say, "Man, if I were that big I'd be dunking every time down the court."

I'm thinking of really, really gearing up next time I go out to the courts just to dispel this notion. If I play the worst night of basketball of my life, there might be more to this theory than we originally thought.
