Re: The worst pick up players.
I had a chuckle the other weekend during a 3-on-3 tourney for which I participated. Watching two other teams play in the semi-final, on game point, the offensive player drove and was hammered by his defender on the shot. The feller still nearly knocked down the shot. Unfortunately for him, his impulse was to call a foul by saying, "And One!" instead of "Foul", "Got it", "Got One", or any of the other one hundred ways of signaling a foul.
Had the foul been recognized, he'd have gotten a free throw for the win. Instead, the defenders jumped all over his wording. "He said And One! Not foul! It's not a foul then!" And a near riot almost broke out amongst those in the stands watching (alongside the team fouled), who all felt it was obviously and clearly a foul, regardless of how it was worded.
As it turns out, the defending team was so loud and obstinate that a check-up was settled upon instead, leading to the defending team eventually emerging victorious. Just had to laugh at the situation, as we'd gone back and forth on that here.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
Where I play, saying "And One" doesn't mean ****. In fact I'd say people are probably less likely to give you anything, even an obvious foul, if you say "and one".NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers

Re: The worst pick up players.
Yeah, that was the debate a few pages ago. In my area, if a foul clearly occurs, a player can just about say anything he wants - "and one", "foul", "lemme get dat", "pizza pie", "check up". As long as the message is conveyed - and in most cases, a foul combined with a player saying something to suggest he was fouled is quite a clear message - then we recognize it. Our logic is it's a foul, we understand that's what the player is trying to say, so why would we get picky about how he says it?Last edited by VDusen04; 05-30-2014, 12:21 PM.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
Occasionally (like two times a year) we'll get a guy who says "And 1" and we all stop playing, then he says he wasn't trying to call a foul, and we have to establish that when he says "And 1", it's regarded as a foul. Then it's all good from there.
Also, I was kidding about "pizza pie".Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
With that, I admit there is logic to it in the areas that say the ball must be checked up if someone calls for a foul and the ball goes in anyway. Then I can see "And One" being abused bc I could call "And One" and if it goes in, keep it moving, but if I miss, cry that I was calling for a foul... but that's why I think that rule is pretty dumb too.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
to the "And One" "Foul" debate, and i've said this before but this issue pisses me off... If I call a foul on my shot I want the check ball or the basket if i make it. i'm sorry, but the defense should not be rewarded for fouling me. ever. Cancelling a made shot and checking the ball up top is only going to cause me to get fouled more often. I play in the paint, and I just play through the vast majority of fouls but the **** gets ridiculous sometimes.Comment
