Win now? Not with that roster. Or using $14M in trade exemptions.

They'll be in the lotto next year and that should be good news for Cavs fans.

But them competing for a playoff spot? Nah. Not even close.

The Cavs IMO would have been much better off taking Kyrie/Valanciunas. Then getting into the lottery again so they could have a shot at Barnes or Perry Jones. If J-Val then came they would have Kyrie-Jones-Valanciunas, which would have been a nice young core.
He's staying in Europe for 1 season only. It's already been agreed upon with the Raps and his Lithuanian club. With the lock out looking very loooooooong right now. He might not even miss that much time. Maybe only half a season or nothing at all depending on how many games get cut because of the lock out.

I suppose. I think at the 4 spot there was probably a handful of guys that teams had value in still available, but as you said, with guys not really standing out with what they already are, a team in the 7-10 range definitely would not have given up much to move up 3 spots. Especially with the "parity" in the draft outside of the top 3-4 guys. Personally I think the Cavs should have drafted J-Val, or dipped in the 12-16 range, and grabbed up a guy. I just dont see Tristan being all that great. End of the day though, the folly probably wont be that they didnt trade down to grab one of the many many MANY role players in this draft, but that they passed on J-Val.

Good things come to those who wait, shout out to the SA Spurs and David Robinson

          Spoiler

But honestly, the whole "well he can't come over for a year thing" is not a valid reason not to draft someone. Especially in a lockout year.

Now if they honestly wanted Thompson and thought he was the guy, then sure I have no problem with them selecting him.

I'm pretty sure they actually wanted TT at #4. I know they were super impressed with his workouts (shutting down Derrick Williams and whatnot) so I reckon that they wanted TT at #4 over Valenscrumptious.

If it's only 1 year (and a possible lockout year no less) then there was no real issue but I heard it was going to be at least 2 years which soured me on him.

This draft even more than usual was a huge crap shoot anyway so for all I know Thompson may end up being the best player in this draft, I just don't see it.

During the lead up to draft Jonas had a rumored 3 year buyout. But after the draft (it was reported in multiple local papers here in Toronto, I believe Colangelo also stated only 1 year in europe during interviews a couple of days after the draft as well) that the Raps and his euro club agreed for him to stay only for 1 season. So I can see leading up to the draft teams being scared off by his buy out. But the Raps (who obviously have deep roots when it comes to the euro players/clubs/agents) must have known that if they drafted Jonas it wouldn't be more than a year.

Here's a link about Jonas' buyout.

Valanciunas was on a three-year contract with Rytas in Lithuania but with the buyout will now be free to join the Raptors following next season.

Colangelo, as per the Raptors team policy, would not discuss the terms of the buyout but DraftExpress, a website that specializes in the draft and has a strong European presence, reported the buyout was worth $2.4 million US. Under NBA rules each NBA team is allowed to contribute a maximum of $500,000 toward a buyout with the player or his representatives responsible for anything over and above that.

If Utah didn't foil their plans, Enes Kanter would've been a Cav.

So, I strongly disagree with you.

The Cavs either way still get into the top part of the lottery this year. No way that Tristan Thompson, being as raw as he is now, will change the fact that they will make it into the playoffs or even be on the borderline even with how weak the East teams are. The lineup looks like it's Baron/Irving, Parker/Eyenga, Casspi/Gee, Jamison/Thompson, Varejao/Erden. We've got 3 players running on their last legs and 3 whom are very inexperienced. I highly doubt the selection of Thompson or Valanciunas will impact the draft lottery. Valanciunas could very likely be a 19/9 guy, but Thompson could also be that defensive big that other teams in the past have had, Big Ben or Tyson Chandler. I'm not saying that's what Thompson would become, but he's really raw as of now. I guess we can only determine what happens in 3-5 years from now.

You don't like that pick in the second round? I'd take him in the second round. Keep him motivated and he could be a good rotation player.

I do see a lot of Sean May in him which is definitely not a good thing, but he has more lift than May ever did and seems to like to bang around more than May did as well. Averaging a double double in the ACC as a big man is impressive.

Just keep him away from Mcdonalds. I could see him in a Big Baby role but to a lesser extent. No risk pick.

I just didn't think he was ready and thought he needed another year because after watching him at Maryland last year, I never saw "future draft pick" from him honestly but another year, I could see him going in the late 1st.

Now, if he can give me 6-8 RPG off the bench and a little D(pause)here and there for 15 minutes, then I'll be more than satisfied.
