Funny thing about Tebow and Lin is they both seem like they would like nothing more for the hype to die down...

So you think close to 17,000 people in Toronto were on their feet standing with Lin with the ball in his hands simply because he is Asian American?

Of course not. Do you think he is getting all this hype and publicity just because he put together a string of good basketball games?

          Re: Jeremy Lin

Obviously asian fans are going to identify with him, but the story is getting hype because this guy basically was written off as not being any good, then comes out of no where lights it up and leads an NBA team to 6 wins in a row, when they had 2 superstars already on the team that couldn't do that.

This story would be blowing up if he was white, yellow, brown, purple, green...etc.

            Re: Jeremy Lin

The Tebow comparisons make sense when you consider the hype machine, but after that it should stop.

Tim Tebow was passing like, what, 5-22 in games? Exaggeration, but plain and simple, he wasn't actually performing well. All he really did was somehow lead the Broncos to victory at the end of the game. And yes, he deserves credit for that, but the hype wasn't about his performance, it was about the wins. That's it. His performance was pretty terrible overall.

Lin is averaging real All-Star numbers right now. It's not like he's scoring 6 ppg on 35% shooting and somehow still hitting game winning shots to build all this hype. Dude is straight balling. If Tebow was putting up Brady numbers during his win-streak, I'd get the comparisons, but it's not even close.

Anyway, New York is definitely a machine.

Remember a few years back, when that cat got stuck inside a wall in a West Village store? Cats get stuck in walls all the time, but this one became an enormous deal; its rescue was covered round the clock, a media sensation. The lesson, of course, was simple: If you're a cat and you plan to get stuck in a wall, do it in New York.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Now you are downplaying his games. I don't think he will play as good as he has been, sans turnovers, however, most points scored in first 5 starts? And, that's just 'good' right?

No. Me changing the adjective to great games instead of good games doesn't answer the question.

Like I said, what he is doing is great. But don't act like we didn't go through this for about 3 months with Tebow during football season. Thats all i'm saying.

This story is not getting blown up if we are talking about Malik Johnson from Alabama balling for the Pistons.

Yea, because Gaines came back to earth.

Lin hasn't yet, which is why the hype continues to grow.

                            Yea, well two.

The game before he hit the game winner he played well, then when he hit the game winner all hell broke loose lol

But then the following game, I don't even think he played, so that pretty much killed the hype.

The race thing with Lin is so overstated.

You'd think we'd be past this by now. If Lin were a black graduate from Harvard and just came out of nowhere to light a fire under the league, would people be citing his race as the reason why he is getting attention?

                              I doubt it.

And really, you will put Lin on Tebow status? Not even close. Maybe in media coverage but the circumstances couldn't be more different.

I know its astouding to believe, but no one in the history of the NBA has ever had this good of a start. That might have a little bit to do with it.
