Agreed, and I don't really see many big time white players in the pipeline ready to enter the league.

I agree with you both...I think that a few more big time white players would help the NBA gain popularity with white middle america, people who may not be into the game right now. Personally though, I could care less...I'm a Pistons fan, and a fan of the game, so I like watching basketball, could care less what color the people playing it are.

Re: For those who are white-americans...

First, let me start by saying race makes conversations a lot more interesting. I will disclose that I am an African-American. My family and friends (no way represenative of the african american community, I might add) do tune in only when the Williams sisters, or Tiger Woods is playing.

I'll skip the whole thug argument. Race is important in american society, anything race related will garner more attention whether positive or negative. The sheer number of responses to this topic is an indication of that fact.

Hardcore fans of basketball will watch basketball regardless of whom you place on the court. I consider myself one of those fans. I will watch the Hawks and the McGrady-less Magic if its on. But casual fans relate to people they relate too. Whether it is the hardnosed player like Ron Artest who represents a segment of the country or Eddie Jones who represents another segment of the community.

As a casual fan of nascar, I related to Jeff Gordon when I found out that Dale Jr. fans hated him. So I immediately became a Gordon fan just so they could hate me too.

A white superstar, and I mean superstar too. Like all-nba first team AND produce Sportscenter -like highlights could recapture the ratings of the past.

As a side note: My grandaddy still says Kevin McHale is the greatest player he's ever seen so you can call it what you want.

thats cool to hear from you , and i know you are a huge fan , ive seen some of your college bball posts were real good.

I have had the experience to live in a number of places , and unfortunatly there is a lot of racism around. When i was 13 (1992?) i was playing against mostly black 18-40 yearolds everyday after school and weekends. The funny thing was i never once thought to myself "gee if only i was black" or some equally lame comment. I was like the one on one champ back then and i actuall beat a kid named Stevie from my neighborhood who was the same age as me , and now he plays for tha Rockets! so i know back in the day when i was like 13 i could really ball for my age.

I took like 4 years off of basketball because i have a bad genetic disease and my mom had to have heart surgery for it and it scared my fam (no fair i was like 6foot 1 when i was thirteen!) , but when i played again for a little while from like age 17-20 i had a hard time getting a lot of respect for my game becuase i didn't dunk (at 6'8)(i could dunk with 1 hand , but not when i was exhausted and i could score so much easier just making a shot) and i was a playmaker rather then a center (although i had no trouble grabbing boards against the 6'5 highschool "centers"). I wonder if Nowitzki had grown up with a stupid highschool coach instead of the great people that helped teach him his dynamic game , if he would have been just a second rate big man , instead of the wonderful jumpshooter/scorer he is today? Would his coach have screamed at him to "go inside whiteboy" ? A lot of people i was involved with didn't understand the game, i played varsity my senior year after junior varsity one season(was rediculous i was a junior in highschool[isn't jv for sophmores] and i was like 5 inches taller then everyone. The only thing that was a challenge was to get the greedy guards to throw me the ball more because i shot like 70% and i could have had 30 a game). In varsity team i was the most dominant inside player and one of the better shooters and passers, my coach did his best to try and break my spirit. When i got a rebound and would start to jog the ball up the court and to make a pass or go coast to coast , my ignorant coach follow me screaming to pass. After a while of his outbursts the guards and forwards stopped filling the lanes when i had the ball and they would run back towards me so then i had nobody trying to get open and an annoying coach! The coach had a chip on his shoulder vs me(most likely racism and he didn't want me to outshine a kid we had on the team) and although i could have dominated highschool the way Bird or Nowitzki gets to play in the pros, They were trying to turn me into a shawn bradley or something. I responded by playing even harder and by excelling in the areas that the coach seemed to want - rebounding and defense. I simply dominated the practices. Not so much with scoring (because i was always running so dam much and fighting in the paint) but i would get nearly every rebound , completely shut down whoever i guarded, and change every shot that went up inside the paint. Practice become a way to vent my frustration and if a teammate and I both had hands on the ball i would throw him to the floor , elbow him , whatever it took to get my point across. I still got zero playing time from the coach who seemed to really dislike me. In the most i got to play in a game (8min) i did shut down Demarr Johnson (6'8" cincybearcat, hawks(car accident),knicks) for an 8min stretch and went toe=to=toe with Johnson after he tried to intimidate me with a elbow i threw a REAL elbow lol and wanted to knock him out so we both got techs (was at his court at least gave the fans a show before they took me out and he dominated the 3rd quarter against our starters). I also blocked a Jason Caple dunk (duke,NBDL) and gave him the mutumbo finger wave!

My coaches feeble assistants were just as bad in practice and would yell at me at seemingly random times lol , like i would get a rebound outlet, go down and box someones man out so my other forward would get the layup, come back and block the shot , run out and defend someones open jumper run in and get the rebound , outlet the ball and they would say something dumb about i need to hustle or some seemingly random shizzle. I ended up getting the most enjoyment out of going back to the playgrounds , the firehouse , the lighted courts at night and just playing playground ball , .

Plenty of times i have been the only white player on the playground courts. I have had guys try to intimidate me with violence (one time a 20something man punched me straight in the jaw for blocking his shot all the time (i was like 13) and he had a gun! ) , another time i was circled by everyone as a kid my age wanted to fight (luckily i caught him with a right hand)... mostly its about respect on the court and then the color vanishes and then it is all about basketball.

Not my perception of the game, but I must admit I would probably have more interest, especially if a "white" Michael Jordan surfaced. It's the same reason that I became more interested in golf when Tiger came on the scene.
