The Mavs officially sign Deron Williams.

Hopefully, he can rejuvenate himself in Dallas. He dang sure likes to shoot in the AAC. He always killed the Mavs in that arena.

@SeanDeveney: NBA commish Adam Silver says competition committee recommends eliminating div winners in playoff seeding. Expects it to pass before season.

We all knew this was coming.

So if division winners aren't even guaranteed a playoff spot then divisions are essentially pointless now.

Good. Top 8 teams from west and top 8 from the east should be the ones to get in based on record anyway

Maybe one of the stupidest rules in all of sports.

I personally think the fighting within conferences is great. Makes you focus on what teams within your own conference are doing. Changing it to best 16 teams forces 35-win teams from the East to base draft picks and free agency on 45-win teams in the West, which I don't like.

Maybe Top 6 from each conference, and then next best 4 records would be ideal?

Get rid of divisions now since they hold no purpose outside of scheduling.

We can say being buried on the bench was an issue, but you can't ignore why he was there. If he was as good as people are claiming he would have gotten more minutes. I think it's a bit much to expect him to be much more than a solid role player. Good for him that he'll finally get that expanded role though.

Yeah, you can actually. Why was he buried there again? For no real reason. Just because a guy gets buried on the bench that doesn't mean he sucks. Tony Snell was far and away a better player last season and he couldn't get consistent minutes to continue to show his improvement (third year, late round guy again Pack) over Kirk Hinrich's decomposing corpse in meaningful playoff games for no other reason than Thibs considered Hinrich one of his guys.

I'm not saying that Perry Jones is a superstar in the making or anything, but claiming the guy is what he is (which how do we even know what he is, he barely averages double digit minutes played in his career) and he's only 3 years into his career seems a little ridiculous to me.

How many teams winning their divisions are really missing the playoffs? Anyway, I'm pretty sure this just means division winners aren't guaranteed a spot in the top 4 seeds anymore.

That's exactly what it means. Still guarantees a playoff spot, just not a top four seed anymore.

I think the catalyst was how this year's playoffs screwed the spurs and gave the rockets a top spot with a worse record which in turn put in a matchup that shouldve happened in a later round

Glad to see the division seeding go, because they made no real sense to me....but the Spurs screwed themselves losing to the damn Pelicans...

They still shouldn't have to be seeded lower with a better w/l

We're at a point where you don't need 4-5 years anymore to determine or project how good a late 1st rd pick will be, especially considering that they don't have much of a high ceiling anyway.

Not sure where you're getting us saying he won't be a superstar because I know that definitely didn't say that. He's a role player and is what he is with his skillset. Long, rangy defender with no type of outside shot whatsoever who can solid defense for 15-20 mins. I'd put Thomas Robinson into this comparison as well, although he has a different skillset.

So there was cause to change it prior to this year? I don't recall hearing much noise about it in previous years that's why I'm asking.
