Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Man I’m so tired of hearing dudes in here with this depth garbage talking about the Lakers and getting Kawhi. First of all just be clear, if the Lakers get Kawhi, they’re winning the championship. Period. It might not happen in year one, but it’s gonna happen during LeBron’s time in LA.

Goes along with talking up all of these role player signings as if they are huge additions. A whole lot of interchangeable pieces are moving around interchangeably. Star players run the league and win all the rings.Comment

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
The very fact that we’re still having conversations about “depth” if they get Kawhi is remotely close to that OJ. They don’t give a **** about sitting LeBron, AD or Kawhi during the season as needed. So all this garbage about running them 40 minutes yadda yadda is irrelevant. What ultimately matters is having the three of them in the postseason and who gives a damn about running them 40 minutes a night then? Talking about depth and all this crap with regards to how to rest them during the year means jack **** because the three of them on one team is going to make the playoffs with ease so you can easily rest them as needed throughout the season.

This depth stuff is ridiculous because at the end of the day they enter every playoff series with the 3 best players on the court and the team they play against‘s best player is the fourth best player in the series. Dudes get in here trying to use Golden State as an example of what happens when you don’t have depth as if ANY team in the league is gonna win a title when 3 starters go down in the postseason. Nobody is recovering from that. If anything GS is the proof of the power of 3 or more superstars being on the team at once.
Cut the crap about all this. You can sit Kawhi 10 games out of the year because you STILL have LeBron and AD for those 10 games. You can then give LeBron 10 games out of the year because you can play Kawhi and AD and be fine. You can give AD his 10 and run with LeBron and Kawhi.
That’s not even touching the fact that y’all talked up Kuzma and keeping him through this entire AD farce since February. Him and two of those dudes plus scrubs is more than enough to get in the playoffs which is all you need to do. Y’all in here talking like they’ll be scrapping for the 8th seed with Kawhi as if GS hasn’t just spent 3 *** **** years dominating the league with KD and Curry missing games all year with that garbage bench everybody was killing them for. So miss me with this depth garbage trying to play it off like the 3 of them together isn’t just as unfair as what GS just was.

Pretty much this. There’s ways to get them rest if need be. All they need to do is make the playoffs and they’ll be favored to win whether they have HCA or not. I don’t see how this is any different than the LeBrons big 3 in Miami except this one if Kawhi signs is better.
Depth really shouldn’t be THAT much of a concern when you have 3 top 5 players + Kuzma I mean come on. But regardless make no mistake they’ll get some good vet signings over the next offseason or 2 who will sign for nothing just to get a ring.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Yeah the depth thing is way overblown. Toronto just won the title playing 8 guys in the ECF and NBA Finals. There are plenty of talented guys to play during the regular season to ensure they're comfortably in the playoffs. If they get Kawhi, they already got half of 'em. Finding another 4 decent guys shouldn't be too difficult.Comment

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Some numbers guy (apparently a tax director for a financial planning organization working with pro athletes) that on Forbes says Kawhi would lose roughly $11.4 mil b/c of taxes if he stays in Canada. https://www.forbes.com/sites/seanpac.../#18aa18db1d8d
Finally, Raptors fans say, correctly, that the Raptors can offer Leonard more money and more years than any other team. This argument is correct but is easily broken down. First, Leonard is 28. In four years he will be 32 and will sign another max contract. He is getting that fifth year somewhere with someone and will get paid maximum money to do so. If he has a career-ending injury during this contract period, he will be paid through a disability policy that he most-assuredly has bought. So year five is moot.
When comparing the first four years of the contract, the Raptors can offer a gross of nearly $6 million more. But that money—and a lot more—disappears when taxes come into play.
We have already established that Leonard is a California resident and that he cannot claim the treaty on “signing bonus” money from the Raptors. Now to break down the taxes.
The first four years of a Raptors max contract would average $36,624,000 annually. The max average any other team can offer is $35,152,500. As a Canadian non-resident, Leonard is only responsible for Canadian taxes on days he is in Canada working for the Raptors.
Raptors players spend about 60% of their time in Canada, so only 60% of their income is taxable in Canada. (I ran the numbers for the playoffs and they came to about 61%, so we will go with 60% here for the sake of simplicity.) This is obviously a major benefit, but it is not enough. Leonard would pay on average $11,715,000 in Canadian taxes at Ontario’s 53.31% rate.
(Again, we are going simple here and calculating all money as being taxed at the highest rate, because nearly all of his salary is in the highest rate.)
Leonard’s US federal taxes would total $13,551,000. He would receive a foreign tax credit on his US return of about $8,131,000, which matches his US rate of 37% on that portion of his income. His net US federal income tax would be $5,420,000.
Then there is the pesky issue of state taxes. California does not allow a credit for taxes paid to foreign countries or provinces, so Leonard would be on the hook for California taxes on 100% of his income. Those taxes on his Raptors income would amount to $4,871,000. All told, his net annual income with the Raptors would be $14,618,000, or $58,472,000 total over the first four years of the contract.
If he signs with the Lakers, Leonard will only pay US and California taxes, along with jock taxes for which he will receive credits on his California return. On an average annual salary of $35,152,500, he will pay the US and California roughly $17,681,000, netting $17,471,500 after taxes. He would net $69,886,000 over the four years.
During the first four years after signing his max contract, Leonard will pocket an extra $11,414,000 by signing with the Lakers than he would signing with the Raptors.Last edited by cima; 07-02-2019, 03:48 PM.Comment
