I honestly don't believe teams have been tanking for matchups ever.

Re: 5/3 - 5/19 Games Discussion Thread
I think it's very rare that we've had teams intentionally lose to match up hunt. This isn't some scenario that happens every season that has now magically been fixed because of a play-in game. Teams can't control what happens in other games, and when seed 7-10 are separated by .5, 1, or 2 games we get competitive games like this for the last few weeks of the season regardless.
Lakers I don't think are out there just fighting and clawing for a 6 seed, they are trying to figure out how to win games with a fluctuating roster period. 6 or 10 seed they need to see that they can win a few games with Drummond, Bron, Schroder, all playing just so the first time they win a game isn't in the playoffs. They can't go into a series down 0-2 still trying to figure things out and expect to turn around and win as banged up as they are. Play-in tournament doesn't change that. Clippers, Suns, Nuggets, Warriors, whoever, all of them can beat them if they aren't trying to fix their issues before that post season starts.
And there is no added "excitement" to knowing that the Lakers need to hit 6 to play the Clippers or if they hit 7 they play in the play-in game.. Everybody already knows the 7 seed plays in the play-in game now, and everybody already knows 6 seeds play 3 seeds, so if we already expect it where is this underlying excitement magically coming from? You're acting like there is some big shocking development like we are about to open a Christmas gift with no idea what's inside.
IDK, like I've said in the past I don't really care for the play-in stuff, but I don't absolutely hate it either. I'm pretty neutral for the most part but anybody acting like we are getting some way different result from it is having some extremely selective recency memory. Lot's of seasons those last seeds are coming down to the last week of the season. This is not new at all.
The only thing this is changing is 10 seeds who aren't close enough to reach 8 seeds possibly won't tank as much as they would have in years past. And even then that's a stretch because most years 10 seeds aren't more than a few games out of 8th spot. I don't think many 11, 12 seeds are clawing for the 10th spot to play extra games and risk injuries just to lose when they could get a better draft pick instead.Comment

And in a normal year, the 7th seed is the 7th seed...though the odds are unlikely, the 7th seed could be eliminated all together before the playoffs start under this new format.
This would've been really cool and useful in certain year's past, the Suns missing the playoffs when they won 48 games comes to mind. I'm sure there's other years too.Comment

Nah I'm sure it's making certain teams second-guess tanking for matchups. Like if there was no play-in, it would be a no-brainer for the Lakers to "tank" for that 7th seed to face the Suns rather than win for the 6th seed and face the Clippers. But now because anything can happen in 1 game, they're shooting for that 6th seed regardless if it's gonna be the Clippers or not cause then they're at least guaranteed 4 games instead of 2.
And come on now, miss us with the “Os HaTeS cHaNgE” cop out just because folks aren’t going along with every single thing the league throws out, lol.
And let’s be real, if Lebron had the #1 seed locked up, you couldn’t give two ****s who the 7th/8th seed. You’d be in here talking about who he would get in the Conference Finals so cut it out. And If the unlikely happens and they don’t make it to opening weekend, you’ll be right back in here talking about how it’s not fair and how much of a bad idea it is. We all know you’re known for changing your mind about things real quick, lolLast edited by ProfessaPackMan; 05-12-2021, 03:47 PM.#RespectTheCultureComment

I'm sure many casuals and non-casuals alike agree with my sentiments. Being an advocate for keeping things the same is the equivalent of old man yelling at cloud.

I can see why you'd make that assumption about me but this season has been such a ****-show that I'm fine with the possible reality of the Lakers losing 2 play-in games cause let's be real, they weren't gonna win **** anyway if they can't win 2 play-in games against lesser opponents.Comment

Maybe I'd be more strongly against it if the Spurs lost their 7th spot or something. Other than that, I can't find it in me to get that worked up about it, lol. Just more meaningful bball to watch. The play in was fun to watch last year...I was sports entertained.

I’ve already said my piece on not caring what the 7th and 8th seeds do. My problem isn’t change, it’s this change. This delays meaningful basketball to me. If they want to make a change, cut the playoff pool in half and do a play in for the 4 seed.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Honestly if they make this permanent they may as well just go all in and ditch conferences and do whatever other gimmicky playoff silliness they want to do.Comment
