I don’t think losing to one of their peers really bothers them like that, and every one of them knows that any random “professional” social media dunker is better than all of them and there isn’t anything “new” for them to showcase anymore.

I think it was Ja who said he would jump in for a mil.. I’m sure most dudes feel that way. As it currently stands there is no reason to join, nothing to prove, they don’t need the exposure.. I just don’t think they give a ****. I don’t believe any of these dudes are scared or care that their dunk might get a 47 and someone else’s a 49… I’d wager “scared” as a reason at like 1%.

At best you win and your prize is “congratulations on wining this contest that everyone ****s on anyways” and at worst you’re a marquee guy and you get hurt doing some pointless contest.. there is just almost no incentive.. would be different if it was 1988 and a basic windmill with force could still get you 50 points. These dudes have to push the boundaries of spinning, props, over people/things, awkward catches/landings, etc.. what’s the point for them at this stage?
Scared as in an L hurts their brand. Scared as in if you lose or your dunks suck, you're getting roasted on social media and Sportscenter, etc. I think is the genesis of what started guys skipping out on the contest. Now it's more to not caring about doing it, but we didn't just get to this point out of the blue.

They’re scared of being a meme or hearing some jokes on the internet for a day or two because “it’s gonna affect their brand”.

Worried about what @NBAFan1234 gonna say is wild lol

He only got the job because they didn’t want to risk the PR hit they would’ve gotten by hiring Udoka right after he got let go, especially with the Kyrie/Twitter thing going on.

Marks about to be on Coach #4 since he’s been running things, which is a lot for someone who’s resumè don’t necessarily look the best.

This is why they shouldn’t just said openly that this was going to be a rebuild year instead of a “retool”. When you trade away 3 HOFers in a year, there’s no way that’s not a rebuild.

Not directed at you because I know you understand it, but it drives me insane when you talk with people about this and tell them its why players don't participate or try during ASW and they come at you like you're defending or justifying it.

Like if someone comes at king at says he's wrong because its a dumb reason. Well yeah, I agree its a dumb reason but it is the reason. Just because we say its the reason doesn't mean we endorse it.

I already know I'm going to hear it work tomorrow that they're getting paid however much to play a game and all that and I'm like tf you telling me for lol

This is the same as the Wizards letting WUJ go imo. They really think the coach is the problem? What does making a change right now accomplish?

If you want to bring in a rebuild specialist coach (whatever that means) do it in the offseason. I feel like if you're a lottery team and every one expected you to be a lottery team, all a coach change now does is tell every one you don't have a f'n clue what you're doing

Just based on how they’ve moved and their words, they have an overinflated sense of what this team really.

Tsai/Marks pretty much think because the team is NY, that’ll be enough to get stars. Hell, their actual plan is to use Bridges as some sort of recruiting tool to HOPEFULLY get stars to leave their team and come to the Nets(Mitchell is their Main one)regardless of how we look/play as a team.

Having a plan based on nothing but hope is nasty work but this is the same team that built most of its Offensive/Defensive system around a guy who’s played like 25 games in the last 3 years.

I honestly have more respect for Jaylen Brown for getting in and just having fun even tho his dunks were terrible. He showed exactly why others skipped it tho cause he was getting roasted online Saturday night and booed in the building. Maybe he did it to prove that point lol

I don’t believe there is a player alive that thinks the dunk contest win/lose even effects their “brand”. I don’t know that any of these dudes even sitting around thinking about their brand in that sense as much as people on the internet think about it for them lol.

I don’t even think the whole “guys skipping out” is a thing. I think people have a select 3-5 contest in their head and just lump the entire event history into those contests… I mean Shaedon Sharpe and Obi Toppin might be the two best dunkers in the league but people would have issue with them being the showcase because “name”.. there was less of a stink around a guy like Brent Barry winning it than Donovan Mitchell, that’s how warped the whole perception of it all actually is.

We had people complaining when it was dunkers like Terrence Ross, Jeremy Evans, Gerald Green, and James White.. dudes who can all literally fly, but didn’t complain when it was Dee Brown, Rex Chapman, Otis Smith, Blue Edwards..

Even the Vince Carter contest, those guys were all so young they were mostly unknowns as far as NBA projects go. Stackhouse was the only other all-star. But it’s a revisionist thing. We know what T-Mac eventually became so we get the “rEmEmBeR WhEn AlL tHe StArS” BS thrown on that contest too.

Kobe won when he was still a bench player.. he beat Ray Allen, Bob Sura, Chris Carr, Darvin Ham.. when guys like Desmond Mason, Jason Richardson, Fred Jones were winning we didn’t have dudes like Kobe, T-Mac, Vince, young-Bron, etc jumping in.. but we sure pretend like all the stars were in there and this is only recent… idk the whole banter around the dunk contest every year just feels weird to me.

                  I mean the only times we’ve even had All-NBA guys in the contest is ‘84 (Erving), ‘85 (Jordan) ‘86 (Nique) ‘87 (Jordan), ‘88 (Jordan & Nique), ‘94 (Kemp), 2000 (Vince), 2005 (Amar’e), 2007 (Dwight), 2008 (Dwight), 2009 (Dwight), 2014 (Lillard and George), 2018 (Oladipo)..

This is just another one of those “let’s be mad at something that doesn’t happen” NBA type of arguments. Just like praising the whole minimum 65 games for MVP when that hasn’t even happened since Walton in ‘78..

He didn’t even really get roasted, the sorry *** judges who over-scored his dunks got roasted. We see dunks like that every year so nothing to really roast in that sense, they just aren’t typically rewarded as 48s.

I agree. There's a lot of big market teams that don't attract big name players, unless they're overpaying someone. We're more in an era where the player movement of impact players comes through trades. Philadelphia is a big market and it doesn't attract free agents. That's why I don't like the Cap Space plan and don't think they have the assets to compete with other teams in a trade for a star in the offseason

It's almost like making the playoffs as a 6th seed last year has them over evaluating where they are. I like Bridges and still didn't like trading him on draft night because ownership wanted to draft a player who had "high upside" and not only traded Bridges, but passed on other guys that has done well. But, Bridges isn't a "I want to play alongside him and we'll form a championship team" type of player.

And I hope the thought isn't just "We'll pair Ben Simmons expiring and firsts, that'll get us a star to pair alongside Bridges". Simmons isn't a plug and play guy. As you said, he's someone you have to run the offense and defense through him, if you want to get the most value out of him. Simmons isn't that "young potential" guy anymore. Maybe this offseason, when teams start to feel the impact of the new CBA, that might change things. But a lot of these teams didn't shed future salary like some thought they would this past deadline.

The late eye cover plus he had the man sit in a chair when dude was only like 5'3" or 5'8" (can't remember which).
