Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
SpoilerI think fashion trends will continue running their course. I mean, if you're bold enough, you could always wear whatever you wanted; you can rock your high school varsity jacket to your job everyday if you wanted. But trends will still go out and come back in.
At the moment, it just seems that 90's insanity is trending hard, but I don't think it'll stay that way indefinitely. There'll always be a pendulum to some degree.
I imagine this may have been region and sub-culture specific then because I can say that without a doubt, there was nowhere in the state of Michigan between 1995 and, say, 2010 where I saw a dude willingly wearing short shorts who wasn't playing it for a comedic bit. One of the biggest moments of a person's varsity basketball career was uniform selection day where you had to hope you could land the big pair of shorts, lest you be left sagging your game shorts all year to edge them toward an acceptable length.
For me, 1994-2000 represented the struggle of trying to find long enough shorts to reflect the change in style in culture, then 2000 to 2010 was an era of wearing shorts both casually and in sports that ranged only from knee length to TJ Ford.
Now, was there technically someone out there in Michigan wearing short shorts in the 2000's? I'm sure. Enough to consider it a trend? No way. But if you really just mean there was never a time where literally zero dudes were wearing short shorts—that at least one guy was wearing short shorts in the 2000's—sure.
This I wholeheartedly agree with. If there was a topic for our primary minor annoyance about the NBA, this would be a contender for me. The loss of reliable identity has sucked in recent years. I'm big on sports aesthetics and I just think the randomization of it all has been awful for sports aesthetics.
I think the league had the right mix pre-Nike. White home, dark road, an alternate for which a team could commit multiple years, and a retro. The fact that seems to get lost with this whole dark-at-home, white-on-road thing is that the NBA has one very distinct difference from every other major sports league: basketball teams don't have helmets, pants, hats, or any other sort of gear for which to distinguish themselves with identifying colors.
If the New York Rangers wear their whites in Detroit, I still spot their Ranger blue helmets and blue pants. If the New York Giants wear their whites in Detroit, I can still see their blue helmets and red socks. And if the New York Yankees really wanted to wear white at Comerica (which they wouldn't), we'd always have that familiar navy Yankees cap (and socks in some cases).
But when the Knicks rock white at LCA, they just like look the Detroit Pistons from afar but with a vague notion that they might be sporting some light orange piping for some reason. Home basketball teams have positive team identifiers everywhere. The paint, the court logo, the baseline, the dorna boards, the backboard pads. The only thing a road team has in the NBA is their jersey color. Depriving them of that just makes them look strange and anonymous.
And don't even get me started with teams who introduce alternate jerseys that don't match their color scheme who then go play on an opposing team's court matching their alternative scheme (i.e. the Lakers wearing royal blue in Philly).
The thing that bugs be about the Pistons teal alternates (and remember, it's just gonna be like 10 games, not an all season thing), is they didn't tweak anything. Teal as a color is apparently in, cool, I don't know anything about fashion. When teams celebrate previous uniforms, there's usually a reason to celebrate, and this just feels like celebrating a color, without anything historically to celebrate. So why not switch it up? Keep the teal, and, I guess the cyberhorse, but make an alternate so you can be "cool" with the color while not celebrating failureWolverines Wings Same Old Lions Tigers Pistons Erika ChristensenComment

Isn’t it pretty typical for teams to introduce a different throwback jersey? I didn’t think many of them were really celebratory, or even meant to be. Cavs rocked the 90’s blue and black throwbacks a year or two ago, Lakers did the blue jerseys, Grizz did the Vancouver jerseys (didn’t even change the name to Memphis), etc.Comment

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
There aren't enough words in the English dictionary/language to describe the greatness of Bill Russell.
A leader and activist both on and off the court. The greatest winner in American sports and the greatest defender in NBA history.
His loss will be forever felt and may he rest in peace.

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
You almost forget how young the NBA is (compared to the other leagues) when you remember Russell made his NBA debut when the NBA name wasn't even around for a decade yet. We've long passed the original 6 era in hockey, or the old days of baseball, and start of the NFL, but its crazy realizing we still have basically NBA originals around.
Obviously all the things he did off the court was big, but for most fans who obviously weren't alive to see him play, you could understand the respect and everything else just from his presence at something like an NBA finals or all star weekend, and all the guys going up to him too.Comment

now I get it lol, JA wore the teal Vancouver jerseys, and the Pistons want Jaden to be JA, so why not throw him in with the same color throwbacks

Point God Documentary was pretty good(available on Showtime)for those looking for a Basketball documentary fix.
Did a good job of explaining how important ball handling culture was in NY and why it defined every PG that we came up watching.Last edited by ProfessaPackMan; 08-01-2022, 02:01 PM.#RespectTheCultureComment
