The Knicks have had preliminary discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a trade for point guard Jonny Flynn.

No formal deal is in place, but the Knicks are debating whether Flynn, the sixth overall pick of the 2009 draft would be a viable option to back up Chauncey Billups for at least one season. Flynn has become expendable now that the Wolves have signed Spanish guard Ricky Rubio, who was taken one pick ahead of Flynn.

Toney Douglas would likely be the player traded for Flynn. However, Douglas is coming off major shoulder surgery, which in theory would make him tough to deal. But Flynn is a similar medical risk. The 6-foot guard out of Syracuse had hip surgery last July and was limited to 53 games in his second year, not including a stint in the D-League

The Knicks are concerned about aging point guard Billups and don’t feel Landry Fields is a starting shooting guard on a playoff power.
According to a source, if the right player isn’t there, the Knicks have considered trading the 17th pick for a veteran guard or center. Cleveland is heavily shopping point guard Ramon Sessions, whom the Knicks pursed as a free agent three years ago.

The one player Walsh prays falls to them is 6-foot-7 Washington State shooting guard Klay Thompson, who outperformed Jimmer Fredette in their June 2 Westchester workout. Thompson reminds Walsh of Miller and would be a coup at 17, but league sources think Thompson could be scooped up by Golden State at 14.

Though not a need position, forward Chris Singleton of Florida State is another prospect the Knicks hope falls to 17, as they believe he can improve their defense at the 3 and 4. A LeBron James stopper, perhaps. But he likely will be gone.

The three guys who are expected to be there at 17 the Knicks would take are Kansas point guard Josh Selby, the Baltimore product whose friends with Anthony; 6-10 USC power forward/ center Nikola Vucevic and 6-6 UCLA wing Tyler Honeycutt.

Vucevic moved ahead of Morehead State’s rebounding machine Kenneth Faried on the Knicks’ chart after the staff was disappointed at the Chicago draft combine when Faried measured in 6-6 and struggled in all offensive drills.
If the Knicks land a late first-rounder and still haven’t added a point guard, Iman Shumpert and Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins are possibilities.

Vucevic would be a good pick @ 17 if our guy is not on the board. As for that TD trade for Flynn I'm not too sure about it. TD played his tail off last year with that shoulder injury. On the other hand Jonny Flynn I really believe could thrive with the team we have.

As for SG I totally agree with Donnie about Landry not being a SG. He's a SF not a SG. Ideally Klay falls to us & all will be well in knickland, but of course things haven't been well in knickland for a while

I liked Flynn a lot at Cuse and hoped we could land him in the draft. I have no idea what's happened to him in the league, I barely follow him thanks to him being up in Minny. Is it just injury issues or has his play been poor too?

EDIT: Well 13.5 ppg and 4.4 apg isn't horrible for his rookie season.

TD drives me crazy with decision-making and I think his defense is overrated, but that could be magnified by the Knicks' horrific team-D and he just looks worse.

I think Walsh wanted Flynn in the 09 draft as a fall back if Curry wasn't there, but Kahn drafted him. I hope Walsh can pull this off.

If Flynn is healthy, and his injuries haven't cost him any of his explosiveness, I make that trade.

From what I've heard, Minnesota just hasn't used him to his strengths and he kinda fell into the doghouse a little bit. But you can see my opinion on Flynn in the off-season thread. If I'm New York, I would make that deal for sure.

I'd do it. Flynn would be better in D'Antoni's system, he's out there trying to run the triangle in Minny which isn't his best use. He's a good pick and roll PG which he'd run alot here. Plus under Billups wing he could learn a lot and would be a good piece to have if we don't sign a PG.

As reported yesterday, the Knicks, if the right guys don't fall, have considered trading No. 17 if they can get a veteran guard, with Cleveland point guard Ramon Sessions a possibility.
Meanwhile, Knicks officials said Kansas point guard Josh Selby and USC's 6-foot-10 forward Nikola Vucevic are being brought in today for a second workout, as they are heavy on the radar.
Also returning are Michigan point guard Darius Morris, Providence shooting guard Marshon Brooks and center Jeremy Tyler, who professionally played last season in Japan.
It is believed they would be considered if the Knicks can get a late first-rounder or early second-round pick. Walsh is looking to add at least one more pick.

Yeah that's what I'm remembering most. I haven't really paid attention to him since he signed that free agent deal with the Bucks.

Definitely was a starter then.
