Calzaghe by unanimous decision. He didn't look all that great against Hopkins, but no one does. I still think Calzaghe is a top three PFP fighter and Roy is FAR from what he used to be. Unless Roy catches Calzaghe and knocks him out I think his chances of winning a decision are very slim.

Are you telling me Joe Calzaghe can out point RJJ??? Man...I got this friend named Brandon (he from Detroit), he loves boxing just like me. And you...give all people named Brandon everywhere a bad name. No disrespect to you bossman, but the only chance Joe Calzaghe has of defeating RJJ is to knock him out...and homeboy, dat **** ain't gonna happen.

I really think Joe will put Jones back into retirement.
And it hurts to say that because Jones Jr has been my favorite from the getgo.Originally posted by Altimus GTRBums.

Thing is, can Joe really win over the judges just because he is slapping punches all night when Roy is waiting and countering effectively? I don't know. I think if Roy can be elusive and make Joe miss (not just block but actually make Joe swing at air a lot), and Roy counters effectively, Roy can win a decision. But if Roy is just standing there blocking his head all night, and isn't too busy, they will give rounds to Joe.
I can't wait for this one...
Roy thinks this is his "shortcut" back to the top of the P4P list. And he may be correct in that assessment. But he'll have to win it impressively.
This match has draw written all over it...
However, if Roy really can turn back the clock and be even close to as elusive as he once was, it could be tough for Joe to win rounds just by merely throwing punches. With that said, Joe could win over the judges if he is the effective aggressor and Roy isn't moving that much...Comment

Re: Jones-Calzaghe
Don't get it. You are correct. As someone who has seen pretty much all of the respective fighters' fights, there is a strong possibility that JC will outpoint him. That is what JC does by his extraordinary workrate. From an "odds" perspective, RJJ best chance to win the fight is too impose his strength and size unless he just gets super lucky and 2 of the 3 judges favor his counters, which is unlikely, as more and more judges are leaning towards awarding aggressors.Comment

Re: Jones-Calzaghe
I'm not a fan of RJJ, i hate his cockyness and arrogance...That said i respect the mans accomplishments in the sport and his god given talent...
The main reason Hopkins lost to Calzaghe was because he wasn't throwing any punches...Whenever Hopkins let his hands go he landed those pot shots at will...Hopkins landed the harder more effective punches all night long but where he failed was controlling the pace of the fight, something he usually does very well...By failing to control the pace he allowed Calzaghe's higher work rate to ultimately be the deciding factor...That said if you were to double Hopkins work rate it, Hopkins wins the fight on my card...
I don't see RJJ sitting back and letting Calzaghe slap him to a victory like Calzaghe did to Hopkins...Unless Calzaghe can land a big punch to force RJJ to fight from a defensive shell his work rate won't be enough to win the fight on the cards...Some people like to point at what Glen Johnson did by pressuring RJJ thinking Calzaghe can do the same but i don't see it...That strategy worked for Johnson because he caught RJJ early with a big punch that reminded RJJ of Tarver and Jones fought from a defensive shell all night long...Calzaghe imo doesn't have that kind of power to remind RJJ of Tarver...I see RJJ testing him the first 3 or 4 rounds like he did to Trinidad and after he sees this guy can't hurt him RJJ will let those hands fly...Once that happens i can't see Calzaghe keeping up with RJJ thus its important he wins all the early rounds RJJ throws away when feeling his opponent out...
RJJ is the better all around skilled boxer, he's faster and he punches harder with more precision...Yea RJJ reflexes aren't what they used to be but he's still quick enough to dance around Calzaghe...RJJ has the ability to duplicate Hopkins blueprint and execute it at double the work rate...If slow old man Hopkins was able to land those pot shots at will and even KD Calzaghe with one of them RJJ is going to make this look way too easy...I hope for Calzaghe's sake he's working on his defensive flaws...
Should be a good fight, i got RJJ winning by KO in the later rounds...I really don't think its going to be much of a fight once RJJ decides to let his hands go...Like i said i can't see Calzaghe keeping up, flurry slaps are not going to get it done...Calzaghe cannot depend on his work rate, he is going to have to punch his way to a victory and RJJ is a better puncher...Comment

Roy looked real good against trinidad.... but trinidad is terrible. He's old slow and undersized and a fat lump. Did Roy knock him out??? nope. What makes you think he can knock out the undisputed undefeated Super middleweight and Light Heavyweight champ??
PUt Calzaghe in the ring against trinidad and see what happens. It would be like putting tito in a blender. I can't wait for this fight and now im mad that glass hands has post poned it.
BTW Jones hasn't KO'd someone since 2002.Last edited by Vast; 07-24-2008, 10:23 PM."I'm addicted to Video Games, and i chase it with a little OS." -Winston ChurchillComment

Re: Jones-Calzaghe
I understand why u think Roy will win easily. But IMO i think Hopkins would beat Roy jones in a rematch. Hopkins is still a good but ugly and dirty boxer. He still has power and he isn't slow.

I wouldn't call Hopkins style ugly, dirty yes but not ugly...Hopkins is a crafty veteran who knows how to win a fight...He is a great ring general and the best ever when it comes to getting in fighters heads...That said I don't see him beating RJJ now for the same reason i couldn't see him beating him all those years ago...RJJ is too fast for Hopkins and an overall better boxer...RJJ will beat old Bernard to the punch with those pot shots all night long and he doesn't have a problem fighting at Hopkins slow pace...It would be a close fight though, like i said Hopkins is crafty and knows how to win...I just don't think he can supress RJJ speed and outbox him...
I don't think this is going to be an easy fight for RJJ, i doubt Calzaghe fights the same fight he did against Hopkins...Ive watched enough of Joe C to know he can box and i fully expect him to...My post was in response to those that believe Joe will automatically win on the cards because of his work rate...In order to do that he would have to fight the same wreckless fight he fought against Hopkins and if he were to do that then yes, RJJ will handle him quite easily...In the Hopkins fight Calzaghe was just bum rushing the guy leaving himself open all night to those pot shots...That style is a recipe for disaster against RJJ because there are so many openings in Calzaghe's defense when he fights like that a fighter the caliber of RJJ could take advantage of with his hand speed...I expect Calzaghe to be slightly less aggressive and use his jab a lot more against RJJ...Last edited by Bamtino; 07-24-2008, 11:12 PM.Comment

Re: Jones-Calzaghe
RJJ didn't KO Trinidad but he did knock him down twice...Hopkins also floored Calzaghe early with a pot shot in the first round if my memory serves me right...RJJ is a better puncher than Hopkins and he packs a stronger punch so there is a strong possibility RJJ could KO Calzaghe...How many titles the guy holds means absolutely nothing, Calzaghe has never fought anyone like RJJ...I also very much doubt Calzaghe would KO Trinidad because he lacks KO power...Calzaghe wears down his opponents with an accumulation of punches...He doesn't have that one punch that can rock your world which Trinidad is susceptible to...If Trinidad can take a punch from RJJ and get back up he can take several slaps from Calzaghe...

Exactly my man, and when he works off of that jab expect RJJ to hit his butt with straight rights (up & down) moving away, double uppers cuts (boby & head), and when JC comes inside because he won't be effective enough from the outside RJJ will bang his body & make him cover up with the hook shots. RJJ is going to establish that he is the better boxer & the harder puncher early in this fight...If JC comes after RJJ...oh man.
Look at the Kessler fight, it was a tough one for JC. Early on, Kessler was getting in JC's kitchen eatin his food. But, he can't punch like RJJ. I don't mind waiting another seven weeks. That just means RJJ will likely get the chance to take all of JC's belts.
Some people just wanna think RJJ is over the hill, and say he's done because its easy to get folk to agree with that garbage because of the two KO's. Roy Jones can still fight man, he's lost a step sure...but the man is 39. He is by no means washed up. This year is his chance to do it, this fight is the chance he's been working hard for on this humble comeback road. No way he loses this fight...thats way JC is now saying he wants to keep fighting. Calzaghe knows RJJ is the toughest opponent he's faced.Comment

Re: Jones-Calzaghe
It is a big error to judge JC's offense and openness for counters based on the Hopkins fight. There was a reason Hopkins held. There was a reason Hopkins only threw few punches. That is because he had to. If Hopkins would have opened up, the fight would have been stopped. JC adjusted to the fighter to make sure he won, because if he didn't fight reckless, JC would have lost the fight. He will fight a different fight against RJJ just like RJJ won't fight the same gameplan against JC as he did against Tito or Hanshaw or the Prince or anyone else during his second leg of his career.
ATG's change their gameplans for each fighter to give them the best chance to win. JC changed his for Hopkins. Hopkins changed his for JC, etc....
I can't wait for the fight. And I bet the house the winner will be decided in the first few rounds based off gameplans. If RJJ comes out and relies on power and counters, I think he will win. This also gives him the best chance because JC doesn't have one punch KO power which is one of RJJ's weaknesses. If he tries to come out and slug and match speed, he is in trouble because JC will eat him up in that type of fight.Comment
