The part I heard (might have been Jerichos podcast or JR) went something like Jericho was supposed to be in it (and win?) but McMahon wasn't too high on him and pulled him and put Foley in just as a placeholder in a sense because all other WM plans were underway.

The official poster for the show did have Jericho, so clearly that decision to replace him with Foley was a sudden one.

I'm finally at the end of the Monday night wars.

Never realized how many names got thrown out there from WCW.

Jeff Jarrett of course basically being fired on live TV.

McMahon making fun of Buff Bagwell, Dustin Rhodes, Animal and others.

And when he polled the audience, Booker and Bagwell got decent reactions. Hogan got booed big time. Crowd went crazy at the thought of Goldberg or Sting coming over.

I always wonder what would've happened if WCW actually did take over Smackdown.

They were going to take over RAW. Smackdown was going to be the WWF show.

The problem for the WCW brand was that 2000-2001 was the last we saw of it, and that era sucked. Even when Booker T had that feud with Triple H they treated WCW as a joke, because they were thinking of 00-01 and not 1996-1998 when it was awesome.

When they had that Booker T vs Bagwell WCW match on Raw in 2001, with the WCW logo on screen, as kind of a test run, they had Scott Hudson on commentary and it was just doomed from a presentation standpoint.

Didn't help they were in Tacoma, WA instead of Atlanta which they had a show coming up there.

I’ve been watching a lot of early 90s WCW and I can’t believe how much TV time Tom Zenk got. Overall one of my favorite periods of wrestling though

He was definitely a guy that was perfect for that era of WCW when they were trying to be more like classic WWF, with the production and the look of their guys. I remember he had a really good match against Pillman on a PPV, but other than that not very memorable. And he was supposed to get a title run in WWF with Martell, but he left and Strike Force became a thing.

                    Re: WWE Network Discussion Thread

News that everyone knows, WM17 was so great.

Angle/Benoit despite it having 1 week of build and was literally a "you don't have a match at Wrestlemania, I don't either, let's fight", it was a great match. It's a shame we can't look back on Benoit matches in the same light ever again, because he did have some great ones.

McMahon vs McMahon. A good match for what it was, and the crowd going insane the moment Linda stood up was cool.

TLC 2 never gets old to watch. You know what's going to happen yet you can still watch Bubba and Matt going through tables and Edge spearing Jeff in mid air over and over and over again.

HHH vs Undertaker is always funny for the fact that Chioda got knocked out/fell asleep for 20 minutes. One thing I never realized was that they acknowledged the streak here. I know Undertaker did after WM18, but they mentioned the streak here too.

And no matter how much I expect it, it's still so weird seeing McMahon and Austin team up. It just feels so wrong. At the same time, what would this moment would have been like if it did spark a major heel and ended up the WWE version of Hogan going heel? I just don't get Austin's heel turn when Rock was leaving. If Rock was staying, it could've made more sense.

Go watch the BSS with Bubba Ray, Bubba tells the story of those two bumps and how everyone involved was aruging over which one of those spots should have been the last one. Bubba wanted the Edge/Jeff Spear to be the final moment while the others argued it should be the Bubba/Matt Table spot. They couldn't figure out how to get the positioning right for the Edge/Jeff spot and when you hear who was the one who came up with how to make the spot work, just amazing.

Bubba was the last person I expected to have such a great mind for the business, I only hear things he says when fans are mad he said something about a certain wrestler or AEW on Busted Up Radio. Then you listen to this interview with Austin and he has such a terrific mind, for the business.

The best part was Bubba explaining how he ended up getting to work with Brock as a singles competitor because "some kid didn't want to work with him."

That whole interview was great. The "pendulum" moment from Hardy was nice and set up everything perfectly. As good as the match was, you never realize how much planning went in to it.

It's also funny hearing how much they hated the TLC name. I can't picture the match ever being called TCL or CTL or CLT or LTC or LCT match.

The little shot at "the guy who didnt want to face Lesnar on Raw" was funny too.

Watched a few matches that are on one of The Rock's old DVD set.

Rock vs Eddie Guerrero Raw 2002
I know this was 20 years ago, but it's crazy to me that even after years of the Attitude Era, and all the crazy **** that fans saw, a basic heel/babyface match with simple psychology still got loud reactions. Even for basic things like the sleeper hold (put your arm up 3 times) spot. That's what having a super over babyface will get you. Might as well have been Hogan in the 1980s.

Rock vs Taker vs Angle Vengeance 2002
Has to be 3 of the top 10 wrestlers of all time, right? Top 8? Idk. What stands out to me is how amazing Angle was after only being in the business for a few years, and how real Taker (in Big Evil biker mode) made everything feel. JR was basically screaming for the last 6 minutes of the match because the crowd was nuts. The best triple threat ever?

I'm past watching WM17 and am following along with JRs podcast during each PPV I watch.

A question posed, was whether there was any way to make Austin's heel turn work. JR seems to think there was nothing that would have helped. They tried making a Hogan joining the NWO like shock heel turn and it failed.

I don't know if it would've worked, but if Rock was still around after WM17, maybe they could've tried really pushing face Rock vs heel Austin. Who was the #1 face for those 3 or so months that Rock was gone? Harder to get a heel Austin to work when he didn't really have someone who was at that level of popularity to oppose him. Even the night after WM, they briefly teased HHH opposing Austin/McMahon, and for a brief moment, fans went crazy thinking HHH was coming down to save the day and stop them.

Though it still seems like it would've been near impossible to get that heel turn to work. People just couldn't buy a heel Austin. Not to mention even after the heel turn, fans were hoping he was just pretending to align with Vince so that he'd get the title, have Vince all alone in the ring the next night, and hit him with a stunner.

That table of 5 episode with Taker, Rikishi, Phineas, and and Godfather was awesome. I thought I’d heard all the Undertake stories I was going to hear at this point but the four of them sitting around doing shots and bull****ting was great.

Undertaker and Kane were the top 2 babyfaces at that point after Rock was "suspended" after WM.

Me personally I never really got the sentiments of the Austin heel turn not working and being a disaster and all this. I remember watching and he was getting boos at the time. Obviously he wasn't like Triple H or Kurt Angle hated or anything like that, but I thought it worked. If anything I think Triple H getting hurt messed things up more than anything. Austin's role went on to be a more comedic route with the singing songs with Vince stuff and competing with Kurt for Vince's attention and all that. If he and Hunter were able to continue on being the serious, vicious heels that the Two Man Power Trip was building towards and just dominating the company with that story I think the heel run would be viewed a lot more favorably now than it currently is.
