Re: AEW Off-Topic
The problem is that at one point all these promotions were NWA, and then JCP became WCW and synonymous with NWA. And WWWF was NWA.
Guys I think of as non WWE include Verne Gagne, Bruiser Brody, El Santo, Pez Watley, Buzz Sawyer, Eddie Graham, etc. Every year they put in legacy guys.Comment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
No…weird was 100% the right way to describe it.
Who in AEW’s management had strong ties to Owen? This could just be the cynic in me but to me this feels like can do this so they’re going to just as a shot at WWE. And if that’s the case(I’m not saying it is) what a gross misuse of Ownes memory.
If there's one person in the industry that I would think "hey he wants to acknowledge all wrestlers, no matter where they came from" it is Tony.
Everything he's done supports this.
Let the people that love wrestling celebrate wrestling. Not everything has to be as cynical as it is coming from the other side. He grew up loving WWF/WWE. He grew up loving ROH. He's just a wrestling fan living his rich kid dream. And wrestling is better for it.badComment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
Tony is the biggest wrestling nerd in the industry. He grew up on DVDR boards and possibly even rspw.

And we (mainly me) joke about people in wrestling possibly being on OS. If someone one day finds out that he was either an active user or just visited OS, I wouldn't be surprised.
But he was at some WWE shows in the past too. People have found out that WWE has even sent out tweets with him in photos visiting superstars backstage during Jacksonville shows.Comment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
Yeah, dude's a superfan with the money to put together wrestling for wrestling fans. That's all this is, and he wants to celebrate the history of wrestling.
I still stand by saying he'd 100% work with WWE if WWE was willing to do it. He's openly talked about how much he grew up loving Macho Man, Bret, Austin, etc.
If there were a way for him to be involved in Wrestlemania (even behind the scenes facilitating the deal for his talent) he would do it. Anyone that's a wrestling fan would. I'm sure he wants WWE to put out good TV again, because it's more good wrestling.
It's why company stans look even dumber today than they did in the 90s. Everyone should want both shows putting out good wrestling. We don't even have one company putting out a great product week to week yet. AEW is getting closer to getting there, but they still have work to do.
WWE's issues on the wrestling TV side won't go away until someone takes the keys away from Vince and Kevin Dunn, because their production is a nightmare... and well we know how much control Vince likes over everything, and that's not healthy for any company. Let alone an entertainment one that should care about what it's audience (and a larger audience they want to reach) thinks.badComment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
Interesting take on the Owen news that I read.
Could the handling of Brodie Lee both during his illness (when the talent knew, but nobody blabbed about it) and after his death (with how they've kept his family part of their family) have helped AEW in all this?
I know CM Punk has said that seeing how AEW handled the news and never letting anything leak meant a lot and showed how they could build trust.
Wouldn't be surprised if a similar thing might have happened here, especially seeing how much they've looked out for Brodies family all year, which was obviously the exact opposite of what ended up happening in WWE after Owen died.Last edited by Majingir; 09-20-2021, 11:16 PM.Comment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
I 100% agree, I think Tony wants to make wrestling as a whole better. Sure, IMPACT may have not gotten too much out of it as the booking seemed to benefit AEW but working together with them shows he wants to help the industry. WWE has too many egos that won't allow it to happen and that's just sad.
But either way, its nice that AEW did build partnerships elsewhere.
I would love AEW taking some ideas from TNA. Given the kind of roster they have, wouldn't an ultimate X style match work?
And seeing how AEW emphasizes wins and losses, the BFG series would be perfect for them too.
The asylum match with weapons in the cage would also be cool to see.Comment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
Not too long ago Impact wasn't even TV. They were doing weekly shows on Twitch and that's it. When you are coming back from that level of anonymity any kind of mainstream rub is a necessary thing. But I'd say the PPVs with Omega were a pretty big deal for them.
I tried watching Impact the other day and when I turned it on they were doing a poorly acted backstage segment that reminded me of when Russo was there. It's the type of segment that no promotion should be doing lol. In spite of that, they are the clear #3, and that ain't bad in 2021.Comment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
Then, someone like Inoki who obviously was way more know for things like NJPW, even though he did appear in WWE.
Stu Hart never competed in WWE, but obviously his impact with the dungeon means so much.
Abdullah the Butcher I think competed everywhere but WWE
Four Horsemen, while guys have been in WWE, that stable never was.
Carlos Colon was another name who was never in WWE but recognized for his other stuff
Justin Liger I think is the most recent who outside of a few matches, had no connection to WWEComment

Re: AEW Off-Topic
Tony wanted to get the rights to “The Final Countdown,” but sounded like Europe wanted “several $100,000” and AEW “could only play it like 20 times a year” according to an interview with Bryan Danielson.
